Gene, Buddy and Blakey wrote together the Handbook of Drumming. In there they included the out of this world timing, the heavenly body elegance and the monstrous attack on the drumset. This video is around 70 years old and it still sounds fresh and modern. I love the well controlled explosiveness of Gene beautiful and cumbersome approach to the traps. He inspired entire generations of drummers, being both a creator and innovator. All my gods are terrestrial and Gene is one of them.
My brother Markus Bott had been tortured during 5.5 years by the German BND,the former GESTAPO. I recorded more than 100 videotapes which ended up in the legal system. My brother was tortured during 1.5 years despite several legal procedures pending. He was assassinated on July 11th 2009 because of our homepage, linked on my channel, and our book Der Totalitäre Staat. If my homepage disappears, the BND will have assassinated me as well
Thumbs up if you want the BND to stop torturing my parents
how do they get such a BIG sound?! its amazing. p.s. ive seen this clip a million times and only just now noticed how much fun the background guys are having. kick ass gene krupa
I love drummers who look like there's nothing else they'd rather be doing. Gene, Ringo, and Dave King of Halloween Alaska are just a few that come to mind...
Rich had more power and speed; but Krupa was 'way more musical with his drums...seasoning the music just right. He sure loved those bass drum downbeats; as he invented the pedal! I wore out my 60's Verve albums of him and Rich; and was so happy to find some of the exact re-releases on CD of JATP. Long live the King of the Skins!
Holy shit, people used to be cool. Seriously, try to imagine yourself enjoying this - in person - on a friday night. I'd know I was in heaven should I ever experience such a thing.
@VerninTheRat my mother always used to say "styles change" but its all the same when it comes right down to it. And yes musicians used to smoke weed back then. My mother married a musician in 1945 and he smoked it. Just saying.....we think of these times as "leave it to beaver" but not really like that, LOL.
Gene was definitely the King as far I'm concerned. Rich is a brilliant player but Krupa had the added bonus of great personal charisma. He was easy to love
Gene Krupa,Buddy Rich,Keith Moon,Neil Peart,Bonham are all drummers who blow Barker outta the water even on their worst day. It's usually a large section of ignorant people of my generation who have have a very limited perspective of decent music.Travis Barker is certainly talented but not even in the top 20 of all time
he was the first drummer to entertain people by his showmanship, spinning the sticks, and the way he moved his arms, a real influence to what drumming evolved into, and a super player
I don't get these Travis Barker guys. He's not very good. He has speed and good endurance but absolutely no style, creativity or coordination. I know something about drums because I've been playing for a long time. Barker doesn't even compare to his contemporaries like Danny Carey or Tim Alexander. Look up Buddy Rich, John Bonham, Neil Peart, Stuart Copeland. Saying Barker is the best is like looking at the 2011 Phillies and saying Joe Blanton is the best pitcher on their staff.
Man, this is like a fucking cancer...I thought the assholes who revere fucking Barker or whatever his damn name is were only located on Buddy Rich videos, but I see they are extending to every single video of a REAL drummer we are trying to appreciate. Do us a favor: every goddamn idiot who thinks Barker is a good drummer write him and propose him all to go on a plane trip. Maybe this time the plane will crash adequately, and all these idiots, including their pseudo hero will be gone...
Jeeeeez...Gene was great. Buddy was great. Travis is great. I'll throw in some totally different names...Steve Gadd, Sonny Payne, Levon Helm, Ringo Starr...and say that I love them all even though we're talking 4 more different genres. Barker is actually very much a modern Krupa, the STAR of his "orchestra" behind the kit in a break from tradition...and I think Gene would love what Travis offers. You cant deny that Barker is a brilliant drummer, at the least.
Why is Travis barker even mentioned besides gene krupa and buddy rich? It would be a shame to compare him to guys like dave weckl, steve gadd, jojo mayer, but krupa and buddy?? what the motherfucking fuck??
Gene spent a large part of his life lecturing against the use of drugs. The pure joy of his playing came from his heart not a reefer. Krupa was an innovator and undoubtedly one of the greatest drummers in the world. Most kids today have not heard of Gene Krupa but they owe a massive debt to this great artist. Thanks Peter
