  • The man was one with his drums. Awesome! Thanks!

  • Gene, Buddy and Blakey wrote together the Handbook of Drumming. In there they included the out of this world timing, the heavenly body elegance and the monstrous attack on the drumset. This video is around 70 years old and it still sounds fresh and modern. I love the well controlled explosiveness of Gene beautiful and cumbersome approach to the traps. He inspired entire generations of drummers, being both a creator and innovator. All my gods are terrestrial and Gene is one of them.

  • I love watching Gene Krupa, because he's my idol's idol. You can totally tell where Keith Moon got his showmanship from. RIP Gene, and Keith.

  • @MusicIsDeadToday You need to check Darren King from MuteMath. He's also got the Gene Krupa influence.

  • The tenor player is Charlie Ventura.

  • This video is legendary!

  • I can never get enough of this clip. So inspirational to us jazz drummers the world over. Krupa had soul. Thanks for posting!

  • What a SHOWMAN!!!

  • lousy beatnicks! he-he

  • He doesnt just smoked weed, i actually think he was the was the first celebrity wirh marijuana possession charges.

  • Just so you know, Gene Krupa smoked weed.

  • Faster than black metal drummers... WITHOUT A DOUBLE BASS DRUM!

  • @briands1993 Not really... though more skilled than most.

  • who is that tenor sax?

  • Love his showmanship!! AWESOME!!!!

  • Gene Krupa vs. Buddy Rich!!!

  • Gene Krupa was not a percussionist. He was a musician.

  • Reefer Madness... Gene looks like he's tripping on acid.. lol!!

  • Gene was one handsome motherfucker. I am 100% straight yet I would give him a second look.

  • RIP Gene

  • No 1080p in the 30's ? How come ?

  • Fake.

  • @mikethaironlung what a fail troll. fail troll issssssssssssss fail!

  • Fabulous showman...wonderful sense of joy and life in his style.

  • I imagine Gene was more fun to work with than Buddy. Maybe Buddy was sore because he was ugly. Aha, that's it!

  • Anybody know what song that was?

  • @Sarge673 "Leave Us Leap" is the name of this song

  • @S6RNR EXACTLY!

  • One of the best showmen in the history of music. Absolutely brilliant!!

For myself Gene Krupa had the best groove I've ever heard.

He was the favourite drummer for all of the top band leaders in his time.

  • @the12345joker Yeah, then that hack buddy rich came along and stole all his glory!

Typical american thing to do really, come along after everybody have put in the hard yards and take all the credit.

  • @85Aheadstix ... Krupa is the OG for sure, but Buddy Rich was far from a slouch. That dude has serious skill, aside from ego... =)~

  • @S6RNR sure...

  • You can really see where keith moon got his moves from when watching this

  • how do they get such a BIG sound?! its amazing. p.s. ive seen this clip a million times and only just now noticed how much fun the background guys are having. kick ass gene krupa

  • That was fucking awesome! How do I get to sound this awesome?

  • "We can't do it man! That's discipline! That's like tellin' Gene Krupa not to go "Boom boom bah bah bah, boom boom bah bah bah, boom boom boom bah bah bah bah, boom boom tss!"

  • 0:00 to 1:34 out of this world timing

  • Beautiful example of how madness and genius can be expressed through sound

  • gene krupa inspired JOHN FUCKING BONHAM

  • Holy shit!! When he takes over!! I got chills man! what a cat.

  • wonderful

  • excuse me, i'd like to ask @rundrummer, what is the title of the song they played? It' fantastic :) Please tell me the name of the song, thank you :)

  • I love drummers who look like there's nothing else they'd rather be doing. Gene, Ringo, and Dave King of Halloween Alaska are just a few that come to mind...

  • Rich had more power and speed; but Krupa was 'way more musical with his drums...seasoning the music just right. He sure loved those bass drum downbeats; as he invented the pedal! I wore out my 60's Verve albums of him and Rich; and was so happy to find some of the exact re-releases on CD of JATP. Long live the King of the Skins!

  • That. Was. Fucking. Awesome!!! I wanna play drums now...!

  • Anyone remember the cheesy movie bio? I think he was played by Sal Mineo. "Throw me a reefer jailbird".

  • Holy shit, people used to be cool. Seriously, try to imagine yourself enjoying this - in person - on a friday night. I'd know I was in heaven should I ever experience such a thing.

  • @VerninTheRat my mother always used to say "styles change" but its all the same when it comes right down to it. And yes musicians used to smoke weed back then. My mother married a musician in 1945 and he smoked it. Just saying.....we think of these times as "leave it to beaver" but not really like that, LOL.

  • I don't think I've ever seen anyone enjoy playing music any more than this.

  • Gene was definitely the King as far I'm concerned. Rich is a brilliant player but Krupa had the added bonus of great personal charisma. He was easy to love

  • He´s the actual inventor of solo drumming and that´s why he´s the king :-)

  • yeaah dude

  • could anyone tell me what song this is?

  • @funknsuch It's called "Leave us Leap"

  • 1:18 out of this world timing.

  • @scrumsie You're totally right, but really, it's out of this world timing from the minute Gene takes over at the drums.

  • @scrumsie at :37 and at 1:18, yep. The anticipation is badass.

  • Damn, look at his shirt collars!

  • people disliked this ?

  • Doesnt this vid remind you of that simpsons episode when flanders dad is talking about spanking

  • Reefer madness or not, you've just seen probably the best pure drummer ever.

  • High as a Georgia pine

  • Wow !! great sound definition !!

  • 1:16 = amazing

  • he looks like charlie sheen

  • Now this is an artistic way to have a good time that is infectious to everyone watching!! Charlie Sheen, please pay attention!!!

  • thomas haake and morgan agren ftw'n

  • dude he looks high

  • i wish i could play like this awesome man! gene krupa!

  • 41 dudes that probably seen a documentary

  • @S6RNR couldn't be more correct

  • WOW...SE NOTA BASTANTE QUE FUE MUY INSPIRATORIO EN HEITH MOON

  • Those silent fills are too deep.

  • he was the first drummer to entertain people by his showmanship, spinning the sticks, and the way he moved his arms, a real influence to what drumming evolved into, and a super player

  • I love the faces of the men standing behind Gene while he's playing the drums. The two dudes are like "this guy, Gene, .... fuckin' awesome". lol

  • NICE MOMENT AT 01:17!

  • The song is called "Leave Us Leap."

  • what song is this? i likes it.

  • 31 idiots

  • I don't get these Travis Barker guys. He's not very good. He has speed and good endurance but absolutely no style, creativity or coordination. I know something about drums because I've been playing for a long time. Barker doesn't even compare to his contemporaries like Danny Carey or Tim Alexander. Look up Buddy Rich, John Bonham, Neil Peart, Stuart Copeland. Saying Barker is the best is like looking at the 2011 Phillies and saying Joe Blanton is the best pitcher on their staff.

  • Im sure Keith Moon loved him .

  • Is it me or does Krupa always look like he's full of Hooch and Morphine?

  • @Way2manydoses Considering he had a thing with Anita o Day it's all together possible. More likely the good smoke tho...

  • moonie got some of his style from ole' krup-

  • so..... just how many dexadrines have these guys taken lol....

these crazy bastards are high as kites. and are parents had no idea.

  • man he looks like a MANIAC when he plays and i love it!

  • This video cheers me up every time, the joy of Krupa playing music is simply irresistable!

  • FUCK HARRY J. ANSLINGER

  • Was that Harry James on trumpet?

  • Man, this is like a fucking cancer...I thought the assholes who revere fucking Barker or whatever his damn name is were only located on Buddy Rich videos, but I see they are extending to every single video of a REAL drummer we are trying to appreciate. Do us a favor: every goddamn idiot who thinks Barker is a good drummer write him and propose him all to go on a plane trip. Maybe this time the plane will crash adequately, and all these idiots, including their pseudo hero will be gone...

  • now i see were keith moon got his chops and manuerisms from

  • Lots of energy! Great drummer

  • It would be cool to hear Krupa with some really good quality cymbals - the ones he has here sounds like garbage can lids

  • Meg White is better.

  • listen to "IREPRESS" drummer

  • I would like to know if his crazy expression is his way to concentrate or is it just show ?!

  • @Debecker10

a bit of both probably. He always looked like he was having a hella lot of fun.

  • what is so good about travis barker, some one tell me?

  • What a nutcase. :)

  • How could you possibly NOT have a good time with music like this?!

  • great cymbals sound

  • WEEEEEEEEEEEEE!

  • If you smoke it you will go insane.

  • and the snare drum BURSTS INTO FLAMES!

  • Travis barker is a fag, SO FUCK OFF

  • Jeeeeez...Gene was great. Buddy was great. Travis is great. I'll throw in some totally different names...Steve Gadd, Sonny Payne, Levon Helm, Ringo Starr...and say that I love them all even though we're talking 4 more different genres. Barker is actually very much a modern Krupa, the STAR of his "orchestra" behind the kit in a break from tradition...and I think Gene would love what Travis offers. You cant deny that Barker is a brilliant drummer, at the least.

  • @theatlantisrise you forgot Hal Blaine

  • now, THATS the grip , not that "ringo" hammers fucking lazy style

  • 1:10 ! just the way he came back into that, cymbals blaring was just amazing!!

  • Why is Travis barker even mentioned besides gene krupa and buddy rich? It would be a shame to compare him to guys like dave weckl, steve gadd, jojo mayer, but krupa and buddy?? what the motherfucking fuck??

  • You can't play on that level while under pot or any other drug. Oh, you may think you can! But, nobody else will.

  • Gene spent a large part of his life lecturing against the use of drugs. The pure joy of his playing came from his heart not a reefer. Krupa was an innovator and undoubtedly one of the greatest drummers in the world. Most kids today have not heard of Gene Krupa but they owe a massive debt to this great artist. Thanks Peter

  • ya!

  • anyone know where i can get the notes to the sax and trumpet solos?

  • a gene krupa - keith moon connection?

  • @izik63 I believe Keith was highly influenced by him.

  • Sal Mineo certainly did his homework in impersonating Krupa.

  • @Kaffyboy This isnt from The Gene Krupa Story, which starred Sal. This is Gene Krupa from a film called "The Drummer Man " I believe.

  • @believer06 Oh, I know that. I'm just saying that watching Mineo as Krupa, you can see that he certainly studied Krupa's ways.

  • does anyone knows how is this song called?

  • @adojferz "Leave Us Leap"

  • awesome drummer. awesome showman. just as fun to watch as to listen to. I met his grand daughter at the health club i used to work at while in college. We became friends. Very nice person.

  • he is the man!!

  • Can anyone pick out the one who is high?

  • intense at 1:10. i cant take my eye off him

  • @zaltaire2 your eye?

  • Who on earth can be the 29 miseries who clicked dislike on this??

  • Is it pure joy, or is it another case of . . . Reefer Madness???

  • @ogopaulo You cant do this after reefer!!

  • @ogopaulo - No. He REALLY loves his drums!

  • @ogopaulo Both.

  • @ogopaulo A little of Column A, a little of Column B.

  • @ChronoFreezer; goooood for u

  • I can do everything he does, not saying hes bad, he was a god for his time, but im way better

  • @ChronoFreezer

    Yeah right....lol

  • I friggin love this video.

  • poland man

  • nice solo. Who gets down on the drum anymore with a long sleeve, collar, and tie. Thats classy.

  • Krupa was always very classy.

  • this guy guy was one crazy mother fucker lol i wonder how high he was when he did this

  • @b3rad220

can u do this evens wend u are high

  • I feel so sorry for todays youth and their lady gagas and justin beibers. You kids have all been bamboozled.

  • NOTHING beats the old school legends. Pioneers of their day and the examples for today's drummers, these legends will live on.

  • Looks like my kinda party!

  • Krupa would put any drummers into SHAME when it comes to swing! King of swing period!

  • God, I love being a drummer. It's a license to go mental, (when the situation demands).

  • I met Gene Krupa several times when I was a young man. He definitely influenced my style of drumming. I am now 68 and still play in a big band performing drum solos. Check out my Tribute to Gene Krupa on youtube. It is listed under Gene Krupa Drum Solos.... scroll down to "Bob Pettinicchi Tribute to Gene Krupa Drum Solo." Hope you enjoy it. Thanks.

  • LOL Definately Keith Moon's role model! This is great!

  • Does anyone feel this much passion about their music these days?

    Gene Krupa is king.

  • damn these guys had fun... you know the room was full of fine ladies too

  • 1:07 Oh yeah!

  • LMFAO@ the comment that rodolforops left...You have to wonder why people who know nothing about music go out of their way to let everyone know that they know nothing about it

  • Look at that face! He is really having a good time. Look at him, twirling the drumsticks! Go man, gooo!!

  • @Merca230e I know, right? Guitar players like to talk about "guitar face", that weird semi-retarded squinched up happy look you get when you're concentrating on a song too hard to notice but loving every minute of it.

I nominate the immortal Gene Krupa for "First Use of 'Drumming Face' in Music".

PS- His style is like Drunken Monkey kung fu. It looks huge and emotion-driven, but it's actually a carefully practiced series of techniques to take advantage of man's natural love of hitting things

  • wow I can totally understand why he's Keith Moon's idol!

  • I prefer krupa to rich because hes always feeling the beat and music with all his body and soul, gotta love him! best drummer ever imho

  • I bet the other drummer did not want to get back on the drums.

  • tzzzzz rifadoo

  • The Best of The Best

  • @pjbdrummer you dont know what your talking about gene krupa was one of the first stars to get busted for marijuana, look it up its a fact.

  • @ClassicsWEREandARE what do you mean by clean? gene krupa was, like most jazz men as well as myself, a big time marijuana smoker.

  • LOVE, LOVE, LOVE IT! Fantastic!!! Thanks Allen.

  • Gene krupa acts funny

  • Keith Moon - eat your heart out - this is the master of the indescriminate drumming, tecnique, the ultimate showman

  • @jutescrim oh i didnt read that, sorry. I just posted " a gene krupa - keith moon connection?" I only suggested there seems to be a connection in style. who is ' better" i find less interesting...

  • Gene is amazing to watch....simply brilliant!

  • I'll take two of whatever he just had haha

  • Gene makes the snare drum sound like a machine Gun.

  • @nachthorn4foot No he doesen´t. This movie here is from a long time ago,,,, when Dolby Digital didn´t exist...

  • Krupa is just plain cool. He would be right at home jammin some death metal.

  • For those of you that obviously know little about the life of Gene Krupa - Gene was not a "pothead" in fact Gene lectured for many years against the use of drugs. There is no question that Gene Krupa was one of the greatest drummers of all time and he helped so many young drummers over the years - a great innovator, a great drummer and a very wonderful human being. Thanks Peter
