This is why Derek Roddy says that just like metal musicians should go watch jazz to expand their musical vocabulary, so too should other styles of music draw a little from metal. Double bass really was pioneered by metal drummers, and in my opinion they have some of the most intricate and interesting sounding double bass parts; I think maybe you could benefit from listening to a Lamb of God record, or if you'd like a Christian band The Ascendicate is a very good band.
