It still touches me so deeply that JPII the great is not with us anymore but he is now in heaven with our Heavenly Father. I hope he can intercede for us and bring visible unity to all Christians through the Prince of Apostles.
@nikolaidis6 Uniates are not Roman Catholics! These are the Eastern Catholic Churches...they are clergy and Bishops just like His Holiness Bartholomew and the Eastern Orthodox Heirarchs...and there is no reason to bash them or criticize the Eastern Catholic Churches...we Eastern Catholics are your brothers and sisters in Christ, in Orthodoxy except we accept the Pope of Rome, not Patriarch of Constantinople, as the Universal primate
Uniates are in FULL communion with Rome, and as such have NO communion with the (Eastern) Orthodox World. They have NO present connection to the (Eastern) Orthodox Church. There is NO universal primate; the Head of the Church is Jesus Christ.
@nikolaidis6 Firstly, Jesus Christ is THE Church...what I am talking about is the argument over primacy, one of the main reasons for the schism and in my personal opinion, the Pope of Rome is THE universal primate because he is the successor of St. Peter, on whom Christ said he would build his church.
There is a very visible connection between Eastern Orthodox and Eastern Catholics. We share the same liturgical tradition, theology and many others things. Universal primacy is the only separation
@vaggos013 A correction... they are not Greek Orthodox. They are uniats. Christodoulos was there as a guest. But those who prayed were uniats (Byzantine Catholics)
Of course they are not Uniats. The Orthodox church considered and considers the Greek Rite Churches Catholic (even in ritual there are obvious differences). These priests above are both Greek rite (Catholic) bishops (judging from the vestments) and Greek Orthodox. The bishop in black, with the long white beard is the patriarch of New Rome (Constantinople) Bartholomew, the head of Greek Orthodox Christians. The former archibishop of the Independent Greek Orthodox Church of Greece is also present.
When the world start to speak Greek they will connect their history back to 3000BC when it all started. The global problem today is the impotent language we speak which is english. English is a very very bad copy of Greek and Latin fo which the former is much more complete (Greek). Learn greek and you will understand the code of global history The words you use have a long history and unless you learn greek you cant trace it back.
Akmotin. When the World All learn to speak Greek, cows will fly, hens will grow teeth and we'll all be watching Nude Boys Wrestling. Greek is not just an impotent language, it's extinct. English is rich in vocabulary and expression. This gives people words not only to express themselves more eloquently but to Think more deeply. It's a modern language that has absorbed words from other languages all over Europe and been further developed by the Americans. French has a similar eloquence.
God what are you talking about? Greek is one of the most ancient languages on Earth.... Greek is richer than every other language and has certainly more expressions than English... Don't be stupid, if you don't know what you're writing just ask a little. Greek is probably the most difficult and rich language.
English is not a 'bad copy' of anything. It's an Evolved language that gets larger with time. But there's a backlash: a tendency in the media to shrink the language to Orwellian Newspeak ("isms") which has the opposite effect i.e. less eloquence. This is because so many people all over the world speak it that they don't learn it properly. This was known about a century ago and was called Pidgin English. You don't learn history by learning Greek. You do it by reading books. By Wanting to learn
what's that ball like thing the patriarch is holding @ 0:56 - 0:59?
i don't know what you call this but i also call this a family reunion of some sort. Catholics came from St. Peter, Greek and Russian Churches came from St. Andrew.
That is a Byzantine-style miter, held with the top (cross) end facing the camera. I can't tell who the hierarch is but from his vestments he is clearly a Byzantine or Ukrainian Catholic hierarch. Next to him is a hierarch who appears to be from the Syro-Malankara (Indian Eastern Catholic) Rite.
The hierarch is His Beatitude, Patriarch Lubomyr of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church...he is the Major Archbishop of Kyiv and Halych...he is vested in red vestments with a white mitre because he is a Cardinal within the College of Cardinals...none of the Orthodox served this Panachyda, the Panachyda was done by the Eastern Catholic Churches in Greek, because that was the first language they used
@warszawianka The heirarch you are referring to is His Beatitude Lubomyr, Patriarch of Kyiv and Halych, Primate of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church
The journalist is incorrect by saying that the Orthodox Church is in communion with Catholics. The Eastern Catholic Church is in communion not Orthodoxy.
He did not say that the Orthodox Church was in communion with Rome. He correctly stated that there are Eastern rites in communion with Rome. (Actually, he misspoke and said that there are only "Oriental" churches in communion - there is a distinction between Oriental and Eastern rites, and there are indeed both Oriental and Eastern rites in communion with Rome.)
The journalist's comments are correct. These are the eastern churches but the prayers we hear in this video are not from the greek orthodox church. These prayers are from the eastern catholic churches praying in medieval greek language.
Of course they do. But when Pope John Paul II died, it was a few days before Easter and according to the Orthodox Church it is not appropriate to sing ''Christos Anesti'' (Christ has risen) in the days of the Passion.
these are greek prayers but those that are offering th prayers are Eastern Rite Catholics. HH Bartolomeuw is not serving in ths service but is singing with the Catholics.

@Clempath What does your comment have anything to do with this. Although I would agree, most would agree.. anyone who looks at defintions would agree, your comment has nothing to do with this video.
That is inaccurate. Eastern Orthodox Primates - like Patriarch Bartholomew and the Archbishops of Greece and Albania - were present at the late Pope's funeral as guests but did not participate in the ceremony. The bishops seen in this video chanting in greek are not Eastern Orthodox, they are Eastern Catholic bishops, that is bishops who belong to the Roman Catholic Church but maintain the Byzantine Rite and usages (sometimes they are also called Uniates).
I saw the Ecumenical Patriarch in there. The "clergy" celebrating are NOT Orthodox Christians. There are UNIATES (basically Roman Catholics themselves).
The EASTERN Orthodox Church is not in communion with the RCC.

This is incorrect and misleading. You will notice that the Ecumenical Patriarch and the Archbishop of Athens are not vested.
The reason they are not vested is that they are not concelebrating.
The hierarchs, priests and deacons who are fully vested are Eastern Catholics, not Orthodox Christians.
