One other thought. Learning to play by reading music only, is great but many can not play by ear, but can play well only by reading written music. This is tatamount to being able to talk only when reading from a book. Nuff said.
There are several ways of learning, and some are self-taught, others are taught by instructors using their own techniques that they have developed, or learned from other instructors. I learned from listening, experimenting, and trying. My technique may not be orthodox but my sound is good, my timing is good, and I enjoy it. Many, even accomplished fiddlers have told me I sound pleasing to the ear. Technique is one thing, sound is another. I play several other instruments well.
okay i had enough! why the hell all you people have in their videos " how to play the violin " and in your videos all yu do is play the freacking violin! i wanna know how to play it! not to watch some people doing it!
If you want to learn the tune, there are other videos in this series. I am a scottish fiddler. Traditionally fiddle tunes are learned by ear (by listening) Which is why in this video and the subsequent ones the guy plays the fiddle instead of videotaping the sheet music. If you really want to learn the violin, perhaps you should find a teacher. No offense or anything, but so far everyone I have met who tried to teach themselves had really bad teachnique. Find a teacher if you can!!
He is right is almost impossible to teach yourself. I tried and now my instructor is beating his head against the wall trying to get me to stop my bad technique.
lmao... i got my fiddle 2 days ago and can pick out my favourite trad (irish) tunes on it; should i stop right now before i do more damage??? i have no time (committment to practice-wise) atm or money for a teacher :( but i love playing with it :p

This comment has received too many negative votes show
You can tell that by the age of 60 David Kaynor has only 30 years of fiddle playing experience, coz it sounds poor.
If he had taken it up much younger then perhaps it would sound nice and authentic and sensitive to traditional styles.
ExpertVillage my arse.
