@Splentaur....ever hear the saying, "If you have nothing nice to say, keep your mouth shut"? You're obviously are one of those people who has to bash others to make yourself look better....get a life!
You make the other SD tribute bands sound like amateurs! Wow! The lead singer is much better than Donald these days. He sounds more like Donald did in the studio many years ago.
I have heard several Steely Dan tribute bands (Aja, Royal Scam, Steely Scam, etc.)...They all do well in nailing the overall "sound"...but to me, Pretzel Logic is by far the best of the bunch not only because of the amazingly talented band, but the freaking vocals are so damn close to Donald Fagen, it's freaky...(even if he does look like David Caruso) A+++. You guys rock.
You guys are great. Absolutely great.... Vocals on babylon sisters are so close, if I didn't know, I'd just figure I was listening to a live version by Steely Dan... If you ever come to Houston, I'd love to check you guys out.
Great job folks! Nothing worse than seeing a tribute band that tarnishes the original by butchering their songs. Glad you avoided that. Especially loved "Josie". I gotta say though, when I first saw the lead singer I thought it was Country music star Steve Wariner, or at least how Steve looked in the early 90s. lol
fuck me dead, you guys kick ass, Donald and Walter would be proud...or maybe researved and sarcastic as usual XD. Anyway, you got my vote, great work.
I know that Walt and Don have seen this, and were impressed...which is tough to do. Can someone forward booking information (offline) to me, and contact info for management. Did Roger Nichols have a hand in this? Some would claim that any music that was well orchestrated in the first place is easy to reproduce...I disagree. I look to forward to an OFFLINE response. Great job!
Saw these guy's last year at Spagatini's in Seal Beach. They were sooo good. Lead singer is a nice guy and mixed with the audience during a break. Love to see them again.
The singer looks like cross between Jon Voight and Glen Cambell but his vocals are as "on" as can be expected given Fagans unusual voice..Well done Guys(and girl)...
Very surprising for a band of this caliber to have an all-sax horn section. There is no substitute for the blend of tpt, bone, and sax...damn...so close, yet so far...still a nice sound overall.
@tptman100 The Dan toured with all saxes in the 90s, so we figured it would be acceptable. It's tricky to get the right blend of horns for every different song and era, so all saxes is a good compromise that works well. As a trumpet player, I'm sure you're a bit biased. ;-)
All i can say is OMFG. You guys are great!!! Like most people here I have been a SD fan since the 70's,and no one can pull it off like you guys did.Keep up the great work, and post some more stuff..
A Squire Stagemaster?!?! Man I thought those were extinct! I used to work at a music store (illegally) when I was like 13, and one of my favorite guitars to "tune" (lol that was my job) was a HSH Stagemaster neck-thru.
I've no idea who Steely Dan are, and had certainly not heard of these guys until coming across them on YouTube by chance, but DAMN if that ain't a good beat!
I've no idea who Steely Dan are, and had certainly not heard of these guys until coming across them on YouTube by chamce, but DAMN if that ain't a good beat!
Been a SD fan since the 70s, Got to give credit where credit is due you do a good job and sound great. Now get over to England and let me know where your playing so me and my Bros can come and cheer you on.
I agree. I have seen them in person and the singer smiles WAY too much and feigns contrived 'hipness'. Fake smiling and posing is not the Steely Dan way. He does a good vocal job, but I would rather see him take on the Fagen personality a little more.
This is really good. The funny thing that Donald Fagan said is that his own voice sounded like Jerry Lewis. It's very hard to nail that sound. This band is excellent. Pro job on the recording. I would love to see them.
I normally don't like "tribute bands" but I did dig this video. Not sure about a live CD but I think a live DVD, recorded at a gig would be killer. Keep up the good work, folks.
If you ever have the opportunity to see us live you'll understand that "what you see is what you get". We haven't fixed or edited anything in these videos. In fact, there are a few minor musical flaws that we could have fixed but felt it would have defeated the real purpose of this Video. Obviously this Video was done a few years ago and we hope to have a new one soon.
Please join us on facebook. Just enter "Pretzel Logic - A Steely Dan Revue" in the search window and be come a fan.
Regarding the issue of live SD renditions; for me none work that well. These guys do a really really great job tho'. The main problem seems to be that the recordings are perfection - and don't translate well into other modes.
Really, really nice! Why such a long layoff between uploads? I'll bet you could do a tremendous job on "Barrytown"--would love to see it on YT! Thanks for posting.
Excellent reproduction of the songs, but what's with the superfluous gaiety? I am sure you know SD well, and thus you know about there intense cynicism, but your hammy acting really doesn't do justice to the original intent. It's not the 50's. Most of their music was written with blues as the core, which you definitely don't see from these videos.
Overall, though, the music was superb and I would probably see your band before seeing Steely Dan. (With all due respect Steely Dan.)
My mind has been blown. Any Steely Dan fan who is also a musician can't deny how impressive this shit is. I think it's awesome that the guitarists throw a little bit if their own Kung-Fu style over those solos. That was tits!!!
*Almost* as good as seeing you guys live, which I've done on on three occasions ~ at three different venues ~ each time better & tighter than the next!
It hurts to agree with "Synthcatt" but I am not a musician. I am a original long time funatical fan of SD and I have to admit, you guys ARE the Steely Dan I grew up with. You can close your eyes and listen to this and feel like you never missed a note. I love this music. Bitter sweet because it truly means I am old and my beloved Steely Dan is in the past. But please keep this love coming to all of us who live this life and stayed off the bench.
Thank you for this. Better than SD could do live now, sorry to say. Why couldn't I ever hook up with musicians like this. This is probably the tightest thing I've heard in any tribute band ever. Correction, it is the tightest.
The singer looking like he thinks he's in an A-HA video is the only dig I got on this. Very tight and the vocals come through big time. As an SD fan I would put the bar up pretty high for a cover - and these folks nailed it for sure!
I agree with all those positive comments. I love SD and know how hard it is to make it work live. To me it's recorded music, and maybe doesn't translate too well as a live experience. This is as good as I've heard it done. Great job guys.
That is a HUGE group to feed. SD is one of the toughest bands to cover. I appreciate how they are mindful of tempos and blending of the voices. OUTSTANDING.
I have every Steely Dan cd ever made. I love every song on every album. I am a snob for Steely Dan. So this compliment is heavy from me. You guys are wonderful. I hope Donald or Walter dont see this post but.............I wonder if they could perform so well live without editing or heavy production. Sorry Donald. My wife said that your lead singer looks to happy for some of the bluesy tunes,(like Babalon Sister) But I told her that you'de be happy too if you could perform as well as you guys do.
Couldn't have said it better myself. I've had all of the sheet music (for years), and the best equipment, and I still won't even play in front of my girlfriend...even though I know I "might" be on spot. Once you've listen to First Class, everything else is "Coach"...I don't care how much I practice. I wish I could've pressed the thumbs up button a 100 times for your comment.
Ok, ok. You are not Steely Dan but...who cares!!! You guys are great!! The singer is amazingly accurate so are the music. You should be in every L.A. touring guide as a "must see". By the way... please ask the guitar player what slight effects is he using in the intro part of Josie ok? Greetings from Chihuahua( North of México )
Excellent job. Of course, all the critics who have no idea how to play an instrument are ripping on a band that does what they do well. These people wouldn't know a diminished chord if it hit them in the face. You critics only show your ignorance.
Bands like this never have to worry about not getting gigs! I'd hire them lol! They got all the textures, down to the solos/licks, and the lead singer has the 'fagen-esque' style down. Really entertaining. That S80 Keyboard is boss!
You guys sound absolutely great, I advice some to just listen wiyhout watching the video...plus you are a working band also, the visual element and attitude is necessary and I believe it's a plus here, you should call yourselfs "Happy Dan"...that name transmits the attitude you transmit...lol
good musicians, the singer looks like he should be singing in Wham or something. Very wedding band. I think Fagan and Becker are much darker than that.
So frickin' what? He sounds almost exaclty like the Fagan. "Wedding band?" *Geez, buddy, chill out. I suppose you can do better. It's about the SOUND, not the looks with The Dan.
Your right. I think they sound awesome! It's just weird for me to see someone presenting the tunes with that timber. Fagan presents the tunes with some pretty dark undertones and thats one of the reason's I like the band. No harm intended. Just a personal thought on music.
Well yeah you got a point but I dont think you can, or should try to capture the soul of the artist your trying to cover. They did without a doubt perform the Dan's music better than most any other band I have heard cover them. I bet you would agree with that.
definitely agree with that... Being a musician that plays 4-5 times a week with all kinds of projects, I know the material here requires everyone to be a player...
Sounds great to me!!! I'm a pro drummer of many years, and I'll be the first to say that Steely Dan doesn't their tunes exactly as on the recording. Heck, when Dennis Chambers toured with them, he basically created new drum parts for everything. Played his style, and guess what.....it worked!!!
I disagree, I think this band is tight. If you read the intro, they said that they had straight music unedited. What you see is what you hear. with out studio inhancement or replay, they are live. Makes you wonder if they were in studio useing all the tech what would they sound like?. But if your a die hard fan I hear ya
Our goal is to play the music live for people who love it. Re-recording the stuff in the studio is pointless, since it's already been done perfectly by Don and Walt. Look for our live album, coming out at the end of April. Thanks for listening.
Very good job guys! A few subtle inaccuracies in some of the chord voicings (Josie solo for example)-Only an issue to me since I scope that stuff for our SD tribute band.
the bhodisatva cover was one of the better examples...overall, very nice....i tried to get a Dan cover band together several years ago, but nobody knew the tunes!... being a drummer, i guess it's easier to learn on my end...
I don't get it ??? Is this vid supposed to be named Pretzel Logic or is the Band supposed to be named Pretzel Logic ? Because the tunes they have played on here, have not not been the song named, Pretzel Logic ?
Jeeez. These guys are great.

Sounds like a wedding band.

This message is for the lead singer. Donald Fagen called and he wants his DNA back. This is scary good. A Dan fan's nirvana.

I don't get it ??? Is this vid supposed to be named Pretzel Logic or is the Band supposed to be named Pretzel Logic ? Because the tunes they have played on here, have not not been the song named, Pretzel Logic ?
