Superb playing!!! Can you do right hand soloing notes for a bass player wanted to learn this solo?:-) cos on piano as I mentioned 10 years for me to learn this :D
OMG!!! I just found my next guitar teacher.... "stack of Herbie, McCoy, and Ritchie Beirach records for ten years and didn't come out until you could play it all! ;-)""...I couldnt have said it better..you are flat out bad***!!
It sounds like you locked yourself in a room with a piano and a stack of Herbie, McCoy, and Ritchie Beirach records for ten years and didn't come out until you could play it all! ;-)
Wow. I dunno what I'm hearing in this, but it brings to mind Clare Fischer, and that ain't a bad thing in my book! NICE!!! Working up my own solo of this tune on alto sax, and there is lots here for me to study. THANKS.
Great video, I just have a quick question. What is the function of the A, E flat, A flat in the first chorus? Some kind of F 7 sharp nine that then goes to an A flat 7 (tritone sub of D)?
Any light you can shed on these chords and their functions are much appreciated.
I so much enjoy this most talented musician and what he shares with all of us trying to just learn one more chord. Please don't forget us, we are always looking for more and more.... thank you
nothing like ancient African inspired rhythms as a base to explore different tonal possibilities from a dancers/African drummers perspective. Sounds like Charnett Moffet would eat this feel up on bass. Iimagine what a band made of Trane, McCoy, Benson, Woody S, Joe H ,and Elvin would do to this tune. Great inspired playing Roger!
To update I just got back from the concert. I even managed to secretly record the whole thing; it was one long sitting from 8:30 till 9:45. No break and essentially one piece with maybe 3 parts.
Was more like free improv within the quartet; not my cup of tea tbh...a bit disappointed, I wanted to hear some of Wayne's classics.
Brian Blade was awesome. Wayne seemed more Miles style, hardly playing much really.
FYI, my cancer psa is now 0.1 Doctor says that is really really great. Still have prob with urgency and frequency but otherwise I am starting to practice again.
Once again, amazing! What would one call this style of jazz? and for that matter, the style of most jazz that you play? I love all of the rhythmic independence of hands and syncopated chords in the left hand, as well as the interesting voicings! I wouldn't even know where to begin learning this kind of playing. Keep it up!! I'm glad to have seen your videos!
I watched this video right before bed last night, meaning to come back today and comment. (Then I saw Rob's version of it a moment ago, so I had to go back and re-watch your take to enjoy the contrasting but equally great styles!) Just fantastic stuff, absolutely love it, Roger.
This is just amazing. I play the piano and often try and improvise but these chords are beyond my ability! I am going to study this in detail. PS Wayne Shorter is in the top 10 of greatest living musicians in my book!!
A superb performance. Great sound, interesting improvisation, and lock solid timing! Wish I could do this. The 6/8 rythym really makes this stand out and makes things want to move.
Lots to learn from this great performance - many piano players know a blues in C, but there are so many melodic and harmonic ideas here to study. Looking forward to the annotations.
Amazing solo. This is by far the best footprints version I've heard to date ^^
