Actually, It is not going from a solid to gas. Look at the Phase Diagram of Water. We have a pressure of 1 atm (atmosphere). For a solid to go directly to a vapor would mean our atmospheric pressure is less than .006. Now, technically, you could have a high temperature to turn it from solid --> liquid ---> Gas.
