Tangled is brilliant, absolutely! While exiting the cinemas I looked back at the screen and practically yelled "Omg Glen Keane! Legend!" coz I saw him in the credits :D
@Unlimited517 I saw on youtube even before actually seeing Tangled that Glen Keane was the supervising animator for Rapunzel and was beyond excited :) Wasn't sure about it at first (thought it was cute but just another CGI movie, but when I found out Glen was involved I knew it would be good. It was like a return to classic Disney:)
@DamianGarcia92 i so feel you're pain .. i so freakin feel your pain. Thing is, you don't get that in animation schools because people who are good enough to animate under a camera are already in studios making amazing things happen .. only way to get them is through master classes...
Why does Calarts get every amazing animator to give lectures there? It's not fair, I'm an Academy of Art student and I'd be ecstatic if we were given an opportunity to see a brilliant animator like him work.
So far I had a cartooning class with Diana Coco-Russell, a Disney Clean-up Artist, and then I met Eric Goldberg, a Disney animator and director at a convention, he was selling his book on animation which he wrote.
thats right, when using a light table ur able to see your previous drawing and are able to trace over the things u want to remain stationary and redraw the things that u want to move and animate, I dont know why his table is not turned on.
@moonmystique sadly not many people are born with the awesome power to draw their drawings the same relative place each time... i know i'm not, so i kinda cheat.
of course, i really love this guy, my skills can best be described as btard luvchild of ken duncan and norm fergusen. I adore this guys way with muscle and grace. (who the hell wanted him to do John Silver? better yet, WHY ADD THE DAMN FLYWHEEL? makes the animation suffr.
@moonmystique oh wait, maybe it is, but it could just be onion skin paper. But I think you're wrong, there is nothing wrong with drawing key frames with viewing other key frames.
i am very much motivated to animate stuff on my own.
i have no formal training or anything, but i want to begin something. can someone tell me what kind of paper he's using, what the name of that desk might be, or any other info? thanks
ps. this video is an awesome sample to an animator's work
Utubeblows has an excellent point, you must start with the basics before you can learn this, and use fancy equipment. Also take a life drawing course, and study the drawing of the figure in motion, it's an essential to grasp realism in form. I think it's really cool you're interested in hand drawn animation, as a 2-d animation student I'm happy to see people still curious about this art form. Finally if you ever decide to take a course, you will start by learning in-betweening and timing!.Cheers
This is amazing, thanks for posting it! I felt bad when he mentioned "pushing his head forwards" referring to the character, just as his own head kept coming forward onto the screen. lol.
does anybody know what kind of pencil he uses ?
what is that thing ?

You should do your keys drawings without the light on. Flipping the paper allows you to see the movement as you draw it.
