@ashcan6 They both inspired each other. Courtney inspired a little bit of Nirvana, Kurt inspired a little bit of Hole. They both exchanged ideas...so no surprise if you may feel a little "nirvana flavor". And a lot of the lyrics: Courtney wrote waaaay before - when she was in her late teens, or so.
It's amazing how well the lyrics to this song blend hazy, distant innocence (violet, stars were like little fish) and a infinitely more violent present that lacks innocence (violet -> violent). The speaker is desperately wishing to come back to that moment of innocence, and whenever she almost catches up with it, the violent guitar riffs kick in, blocking her from reaching it pushing it further away into the realm of distant memory. I've always loved that contrast in the song. Just brilliant.
@coursestudent, you're totally right. I'd also add that another reason people are afraid of her is because she's shameless when it comes to knowing who she is. She's sort of a "bare all, take it or leave it" type, and that attitude (coming from a woman no less) scares a lot of people. In spite of the attitude, she otherwise comes across to me as a fairly nice and intelligent woman who's had a lot of bad things happen in her life, which is just fuel for the fire. She's got an intense presence.
Watching this video years down the line, I can understand why so many people hate her: she scares them. The combination of the overt femininity (ballet dancing, stripping) with such aggressiveness, is sort of overwhelming. I mean, I like it. But I think it scares most people.

@coursestudent, you're totally right. I'd also add that another reason people are afraid of her is because she's shameless when it comes to knowing who she is. She's sort of a "bare all, take it or leave it" type, and that attitude (coming from a woman no less) scares a lot of people. In spite of the attitude, she otherwise comes across to me as a fairly nice and intelligent woman who's had a lot of bad things happen in her life, which is just fuel for the fire. She's got an intense presence.

Watching this video years down the line, I can understand why so many people hate her: she scares them. The combination of the overt femininity (ballet dancing, stripping) with such aggressiveness, is sort of overwhelming. I mean, I like it. But I think it scares most people.
