  • Loved this game as a kid in the arcade. So wanted a coleco vision so I could play at home but could only get the good ol atari 2600. 39 and still gaming

  • 200 pts! Good!

  • This game? You will never believe how many days and how much money a friend of mine spent on this ! We were addicted and it was so much fun! This is history of gaming! When I look at todays games and how awesome the stuff is you can play at home (who goes to Arcade-Hall anymore?) I can just say : It's a miracle and I am so grateful to be still there and cos I still love gaming now I'm wasting my life in front of the PC - but why not? It's fun! Zaxxon forever!

  • I just couldn't play this game for the life of me. As many people are posting, the angle of the game working out where you were too difficult.

  • One of the first Arcade Games I remember

  • oh man, i don't think i've ever been happier than playing this game back in '82 on the way to school. LOVE IT! miles ahead of anything else at the time.

  • Wow Zaxxon... brings back memories, was this by Sega? too bad it's not around, I used to have an intellivision, thought that was the greatest thing, till Sega came along with 3D!!

  • This is a great game to play if you hate oil companies.. you get to blow up a refinery!

  • i never understood how to pass that house with the bomb in the end

  • zaxxon at the Skate Ranch Classic!!!!

  • I still prefer Scramble. This game was too annoying.

  • Wow...I'm a retard, I couldn't even get past the first wall...

  • Thank you for posting this. This was one of my favorites as a kid but was really bad at it :P

  • I had totally forgot all about this arcade videogame(1st time seen it's graphic play in over 22 years).Takes me back to the early-mid 1980's.

  • had to shoot those orange tanks so you wont run out of fuel ....heard there was a super zaxxon back in them days never seen it though...these games ate all my quarters back then

  • I remember I was so young playing this game (born in 75), and others like Scramble, Tempest and I could never get my rate of fire up enough to be effective.

  • does this game have an ending?

  • It was a 3D Game. I used to play it. Suddenly a missile appeared directly to me if I couldn't targer directly to those tanks to refuel. Then I learned the strategy and finally I learned to beat that robot when the base appeared again. Memories from the '80s.

  • There was always a line to play this game because Zaxxon was so popular. And I really liked the Colecovision version. It looked almost like the arcade game. And I recently got an actual Zaxxon marquee to hang on my closet door.

  • The trick to the 3d is to watch where your lasers go. If the laser gets through the hole, you will too.

  • Remember when this game had all the hype

I mean it was the SH*T

  • Hey! First 3-D game!

  • @dukenthaylor I have both zaxxon and superzaxxon games which are emulated on MAME 64(PC)but I cannot hear the sounds.I already have downloaded the wave sounds files, but I do not know where to put the wavew sounds of both games.on which files I need to put the sound waves in order to load them up on both games?Thank a lot,I appreciate it.Truly,Raul

  • @123456RaulMorales apologies, raul. i really don't remember...i've long since abandoned that old pc w/mame on it. my only guess would be to create a master folder for the emulator, then put roms/wavs for each game in a separate sub-folder. again, apologies if it doesn't help...but i hope it does. PEACE!

  • @dukenthaylor When(on which year) did you abandon the old PC w/MAME on it?How can I create a master folder for the emulator in order to put roms/wave sounds for each game in a separate sub-folder?Very Interesting....Truly,Raul

  • Mind blowing graphics and sound for 1982 that couldn't really be recreated until the 16-bit era.

  • The colors of the spaceship make me want to eat some fruit or fruit flavored hard candy. Also reminds me of the ever-lasting jawbreaker from Willy Wonka.

  • Anyone remember a PC game called The Reap that was a bit like this? It wasn't bad and captured that vintage arcade style.

Anyway - Zaxxon was and still is ace

  • EAR RAPE

  • I'm not ashamed to admit that this is, hands down, one of the toughest games I ever played.

  • Supergeil!!

If you want to read this in english, please send me a mail;)!

  • I wish Sega would revisit this game. They have so many great classics just sitting there collecting dust.

  • @DarthTigreros62 They've released a cell phone version about 2 months ago. The graphics are very clean. I have it on my Blackberry Pearl (not really good for gaming) and it plays smoothly on my device; it's a blast to play. It's available with T-Mobile. Check it out.

  • My fav..It was the 3D graphics that got me.

  • the commodore 64 version was the best home version

    .

  • The Colecovision home console version was almost the same as this. The colecovision was a very powerful system.

  • Used to get stoned and play this at Strohs Ice Cream in Plymouth Michigan

  • Ear rape much?

  • @predking You would never have survived an arcade in the early 80's.

  • @NinjaGhostScorpion Even so, there's no need for him to set the volume up so high for this video.

  • Everyone had their favorite game. This one was mine. One of the first to get 3 dimensional. It was hard but when you saw someone better than you play it you learned how it was done!!

  • whoever made this game must of hated people

  • This game had some major creepy sounds...very atmospheric in an unsettling way.

  • Nowhere near as creepy as Sinistar!

  • The depth perception trickiness is what made this game superior. If you hated this game, you probably didn't play enough to master it.

  • Those space planes are a real bugger. You only needed one more each time.

  • This game used to piss me off. Because it was at an angle it seemed like you were clear of a wall or whatever but you'd crash right into it.

  • Yeah, you had to watch where your lasers hit on the wall to see whether you were lined up.

  • @strakallah I know what you mean, if only the shadow went up the wall when the ship was flying over it.

  • imagine there being a pimp my ride back in the 80s lol and they hook you up with a brand new Atari lol

  • I use play this when was 5 lol

  • I hated this game so much I bought an authentic arcade cabinet and gave it the "Office Space" treatment. Nah kidding. I couldn't afford one.

  • I hated this game too.

It gave a lot of atmosphere to the arcade, with the great sounds and heavy duty joystick.

But gameplay sucked, it was too hard to gauge depth.

It was better to look at/listen to this game than to actually play it.

  • The gameplay is quite tricky, that's for sure. I'd prefer games like Galaga because it doesn't have an elevation level like Zaxxon.

  • this game always screwed with me-- I was never sure of how high to go to get over those damn walls, so I either crashed into them or got hit by some other obstacle...

  • Yeah, it was another "I want to get good at this game because it looks really cool", but I was always thrown by the perspective thing.

  • I have the full sized version in my garage,it works great its for sale though if anyone is interested 500.00

  • This what I loved about video games that survive to this day.... STUPID RULES!!!

You can shoot gun turrets and gas tanks but heaven forbid your rounds can put a whole in a brick wall ... its like having a lightsabler that cant cut a tree trunk....

  • Man....I remember the first time I saw this....first 3d game I ever played..difficult but so cool, even the sounds. Still play it today...80,s games still rule !

  • Wasn't a big Zaxxon fan but the memories still lives on. GALAXIAN all day.

  • its all about sega!!!

  • Comment removed

  • Man, I loved that game. I pumped a LOT of quarters into that machine.

  • The incredible things about the games from the early 80s are that they're very simple and yet people still play them now. As great, expansive and complex as games are now, they're soon forgotten, dropped in favor of the newest and hottest games. How many still go back and play PS1 games? I have a bunch but I haven't touched them since I got the first Xbox.

  • Very well said, I could not agree with you more! Graphics of todays games are fine and all, but when it comes right down to it, it's the older games that had the overall best gameplay. By the way, I give you thumbs up point on your comment. : )

  • Thanks, I gave you a thumbs-up, too. I think games with expansive worlds, deep storylines, well-acted clips, etc., can be good and gun (such as Grand Theft Auto Vice City), but not all games are Vice City. I think gamemakers have gone too far into realism and away from fun. Cue up GTA IV. Even though that Jet Li videogame Rise to Honor got bad reviews, I thoroughly enjoyed it because it mixed in some late 80s style gaming into it.

  • "How many still go back and play PS1 games?"

I do. Tekken 3, Sentinel Returns, Tempest X-3, Thrill Kill... I still like them.

  • But, how many people go back and play them? I wasn't asking for who still plays them. I can bet that most people play their PS2/PS3 or Xbox/Xbox360 games.

  • @mykalroze i do i prefer ps1 games to ps3 games

im playing twisted metal, valykrie profile, final fantasy 7,9 and tactics and vandal hearts

  • @mykalroze true, i have ps2 games but i very rarely play them cuz i got the wii, but i go and play super mario the origianal, dk, dk junior, galaga, pac-man, and others.

  • Sound needs to be a bit louder.

  • Brings back memories. I won a little trophy in a local arcade contest...not sure where it is now.

You use the same attack patterns I did, too! Though I usually got Zaxxon at the end. Definitely one of my "Golden Age dream arcade" entries.

  • Hey, where did you get this original version? All I got is the hyped up retro remix and it is not nearly as cool as this

  • Probably Romhustler.

  • this game is on sega genesis collection for ps2!

  • Remember the commercial for this game, with the (misleading) 3D CGI? I reworked it as a hypothetical 1995 commercial for a 3D Zaxxon on the Saturn: watch?v=GK88Gk661fI

  • what game system is this.. (atari, commodore..)?

  • This is the arcade version of Zaxxon. It was subsequently ported to MS-DOS, Apple II, Atari 400/800, Atari 2600, Atari 5200, Atari XL, MSX, ZX Spectrum, Commodore 64, TI 99/4A (as Arcturus), Dragon 32, Amstrad CPC (as Zaxx), ColecoVision, Intellivision and TRS-80 Color Computer.

  • And there was a Sega SC-3000/SG-1000 port too that even played music during the gameplay! My favorite version was the Colecovision port, though.

  • some of the levels look like circuit boards. little lines look like connecting wires, and towers and oil tanks look like transistors.

for an early 80s game it looks phenominal in terms of 3D mapping and color depth

  • The local squash courts had a few tabletop machines. Zaxxon came along and was next to a 2d platformer called Donkey Kong. It was pretty mind blowing at the time. For a brief period of time I had the neighborhood high score for this game but that didn't last long.

  • This was an awesome game. I always loved it. Remember getting a high score of around 750,000.

  • Loved this game. Was way ahead of its time back in the day with all the 3-D effects.

  • i had the atari 2600 port of this game which looked awful compared to this version

  • Shoot Zaxxon the enemy before he launches his missile at you for a 5000 point bonus.

  • this game was super hard :)

  • I wish someone would port this or make a modernized version (without losing the gameplay) that is

  • they did, it's called "Viewpoint" on the Neo-Geo

  • Loved this game. This and Battlezone were ahead of their time, for flirting with 3D. I remember Super Zaxxon, its sequel, was cool too but much harder to play because it was much faster.

  • Wich version of zaxxon is this????

  • does anyone know how i can get a working colecovision system? have some many games i want to play and coleco's website when i last checked wasnt helpful. no one sells them often on ebay that guarantee to work

  • does anyone remember year of kung-fu? mid 80s

  • You mean Yie Ar Kung Fu, the game? Yeah, it was pretty cool. I think they sell it on the Nintendo Wii virtual store

  • yea thats the one, loved that game!hated the lady with the fans tho! thanx

  • Classic from days gone bye!

  • This game was ahead of it's time. Excellent!

  • Now if we only had MAME for the GBA...

  • My brother Arnold was the greatest Zaxxon player ever!

  • I used to waste my quarters alot on this game. It was My favorite. Unlike the other games where you could go only left/right, forwoard/backward you can go up, down, and zig zag as well. Despite the graphics where a little cartoonish and 2-D.

  • guys no offense, but i dont like zaxxon. the dept perception is just crazy and altitude is so frustrating and confusing

  • lol you didn't use your thumbs to shoot.

They should remake this game in 3d, and make an amazing epic final battles vs ZAXXON

  • This was a jaw-dropper when it first appeared in the arcades. The graphics were a serious leap forward.

I was pretty good at Zaxxon for an 8-year-old. My strategy for the aerial battles was to always stay at maximum altitude so you could clearly tell when the enemy planes were at your level. Try to pick them off as they reach the top of their climb patterns, or just avoid them.

  • I have a sore thumb just watching this.

  • This is great. This game was always more fun to watch than play.

  • I think the game is great but it has not stood the test of time. I don't think the game has ever been improved since its original arcade version more than 20years ago.

  • how many levels are there in zaxxon cause i love zaxxon

  • uh billienz

  • My favorite video game EVER! Thanks for posting. (^_^)

  • About the space battle; What worked for me on the C64 version was just to avoid the ships. If they went down, I went up. If they went up, I went down. They can't kill you if you're not on the same level. Not the best way to score points, but I prefered to stay alive. :)

  • I remember that part of the game used to infuriate me.

I just hated it. What you said is was right to a certain degree but you've got to destroy some of them as well.

  • I hate zaxxon so much, I use to always do terrible at it.

  • This makes Colecovision's version look like complete shit!

  • Awesome!
