Hi Betty, how can I make buttermilk if I can't buy it? And how did you make that gorgeous edge for the pie crust? I have to do the same thing! I luv all your videos!
@rachellesim1013 Add one tablespoon of lemon juice to one cup of regular milk to use as one cup of buttermilk. You can find the technique of fluting the crust in my video called "Betty's Best Homemade Pie Crust."
I've been just going through all your videos again, and I must say, apart from your videos being perfectly amazing, that Rick has an incredibly smooth and steady hand with that camera! So professional, the both of you :)
I was happy to see you feature this!! My family prepares this for every holiday!! I'm from SC, and it's a must!! I live in Colorado now... and people here, have never heard of this! Yum!! Thank you! =)
Hey Betty, I'm from India and I've really been enjoying your recipes. I really wanna try this one out, so, I wanted to know, how large is you cake dish (or in this case, you pie crust) In diameter, i mean.
Can you show us how you make pecan pies, if you make pecan pies :) and I was wondering what type of foods would you make for someone who has just gotten braces. I will be getting braces soon and was wondering if you could give me some ideas on what to cook. Thanks you :)
@sunflowergiggles I do have pecan pie in bettyskitchen--and it is the best! Just search for pecan pie in bettyskitchen. I have a lot of nice desserts like chocolate mousse, peanut butter pudding, etc. that you will enjoy when you get your braces. For regular food, mashed potato casserole, jello salads, etc.--all good stuff!
@bettyskitchen Hello Betty :) your recipe really looks tasty! I've never made a pie before, do you cook for the same amount of time with all fillings or can the cooking time differ because of the filling? Thanks :)
@PNuTButRJeLLy1812 It is a different amount of time for each filling. Just follow the recipe, but also check the pie as it cooks. For a pie like this one, when a toothpick comes out clean, it is done.
@iamsouthofnowhere We use a Canon PowerShot S5 IS (8.0 megapixels). We've had it a long time, so I don't know if they still make that model. We don't use a tripod; Rick just moves around the room to get the best shot of the food.
I LOVE BUTTER MILK Betty! This pie looks tasty and wonderful!Butter milk, COOKIES, ICE CREAM Marinated chicken Biscuits YEAH! for butter Milk! Thank you Betty!
I can't wait to try this Betty! Is it similar to a flan? (a very sweet flan maybe?) I do use recipes which call for buttermilk but I don't think it's sold here in France so I use milk and either lemon juice, malt or white vinegar (whatever I have on hand) - I read about this somewhere on the internet. I was wondering, could you reccoment a buttermilk substitute/recipe?
@purplepuma123 The texture is different from flan, which is more like custard. I use 1 tablespoon lemon juice along with 1 cup milk in place of 1 cup buttermilk when I don't have actual buttermilk on hand.
Hey Betty, I never heard of this pie before and it looks interesting.. Do you think this pie is strong enough to hold up just baking in a remekin; without a crust? Do you think it would be able to be taken out of the ramekin and served like a cake? How long would you bake them for if I did it this way? Thanks! Can't wait to try this.
@x00sarin00x Yes, I think you could bake this in a ramekin without the crust. Getting it out after it is done depends on how the ramekins are shaped. It may be very easy or very hard. I would bake them and watch them, and when a toothpick comes out clean, they're done.
This looks delicious! Though, I have a question. Do you think this would hold up well being grilled, instead of baked? The men of the family usually do fruit (apple, blueberry, etc...) pies on the grill but I've never seen a custard-like pie done. I actually love the nice smoked flavoring to a normally baked dessert and since the summer is here, I actually want to do a little bit of experimenting with grilled sweets! <3
Do you need to store this pie in the refrigerator? If so, is it best to let it come to room temp before eating or is it equally good eating it cold? Thank you and thank your for the recipe.
@TheMOstang1 Hi Ann! Yes, you should store the pie in the refrigerator. Some people like to eat it while it is still chilled. I prefer it warm, so I usually put it a single piece in the microwave for 30 seconds at half-power. If this is for company, you may set it on the counter and let it come to room temperature, and put the garnish on when you cut the pie.
I see you did go to Meijers, hopefully they still had the strawberries on sale for 1.00 a qt. Since I bought so many decided to try my hand at making homemade strawberry pancake syrup...Ohhh my goodness it came out so great. If you would like my recipe to make and video please let me know. Going to have cream cheese pancakes and strawberry syrup for breakfast. Btw hope you and Rick are safe from all of these bad storms..We are going to get it bad in an hour per the news channel.
Oh my gosh Betty all of your videos are so amazing you cook and give directions beautifully. I hope you make your videos for a long time. Personally I think that you deserve your own show. Thank you for sharing your wonderful recipes with all of your fans.
That pie looks so good! I feel hungry just looking at it. I love how wholesome and brown it looks, like something from a book of illustrations. I hope to try this out someday. Thank you for the recipe!
Ah I can't wait to try it thank you for the great idea,I am a new viewer and I am just wondering have you shown how to make trifle I know its simple but I have yet to find a trifle like my mother made when I was small and would love to know how you would make one, thanks again!
@TheNass223 Wikipedia: Buttermilk refers to a fermented dairy product produced from cow's milk with a characteristically sour taste caused by lactic acid bacteria. This variant is made in one of two ways:cultured buttermilk is made by adding lactic acid bacteria to milk; Bulgarian buttermilk is created with a different strain of bacteria, which creates more tartness.Whether traditional or cultured, the tartness of buttermilk is due to the presence of acid in the milk.
I just took it out of the oven and couldnt wait for it to cool completly....I am in HEAVEN....so so good! This ones a keeper, I really appreciate you!!
@Betty thank you for replying. I will make it this weekend.I'd love to send you a photo of my buttermilk pie! Lao I made a really nice cornbread last night in a skillet with sour cream. It was heavenly!
Buttermilk pie is my favorite ches type pie. My dh and his family wouldn't touch it because of the buttermilk. I was shocked that would make a difference to anyone, especially good southern farm folks. I could not even get anyone to touch it. So, I just don't make it much anymore, since we women generally cook to please that husband.
@hcrafts1 Buttermilk can be made with a bit of lemon juice and regular milk. Betty has also said it in a video-- her "Sugar and Cinnamon Doughnut Holes"
Well this brought back some wonderful childhood memories! My grandmother made this pie for me when I'd come to visit each summer and served it with homemade whipped cream. I haven't had anything close to hers in years so I might try your recipe. Thanks!!

Betty, for the buttermilk can I use any vinegar? Like red wine vinegar
idunnoproductionzz 2 months ago
@idunnoproductionzz Yes, you may add any type of vinegar (or lemon juice) to the milk and substitute that in the place of buttermilk.
