  • Well done!

  • great playing on a great tune.

  • a jam with marshall harrison

  • nice hybrid tenique!!

  • Is there a sneaky edit in there at 4:21? Nonetheless, top effort.

  • @lonegroover Er...nope! Not sure what you're referring to but thanks for the kind comment!

  • tom could u please tell me if you are thinking 5 1 on the resolving dominants chordmeaning are u playing altered scales or just chord tones and scales

  • complimenti molto bello

  • Lovely liquid style. Fantastic

  • 0:40 is so huge.

  • I wonder what's happening in 2:08....

  • @thegreatgarry Minor mistake. Harmonics slip out every once in a while

  • Genial!!!!!!!!!!

  • Holy Smokes!!!

  • Hey I don't remember screamin electric guitars on Bill Evans' records. LOL I like this improv very much. Seems like you shed on tunes that are real challenge to play musically on. But you do it - real nice! After hearing your other vids, your new guitar really does sound a lot better. Did you change a lot of other things or just the guitar?

  • Hey Tom!

What kind of strings do you use? Your legato seems so effortless - holdsworth like.

Great work on this, I hope to be able to play like this some day! Please upload a couple more of these standards, it's so much fun to listen to your take on it :)

  • @Kapteinar I am pretty sure he uses D'dadarrio 9-42 strings.

  • That's what I thought too! The tension from the 25,5" neck would be a lot for that kind of legato playing with 10s.

  • @Kapteinar Hi guys, I actually use 10's. I find the extra tension gives more stability and a better feel for legato.

  • A very tasteful and creative improvisation over one of my favourite artist's pieces. I really dig your tone btw, what are you playing through?

  • Tom uses a Mesa Boogie Express 5:50 and an Orange 2 12 cab (that he says he doesn't like a lot).

And I imagine he uses the pedals from his demo videos.

  • Tom, this is unreal, especially as you are not only playing over these difficult changes but doing so with your own personality. Incredible man.

  • Thanks dude! Looking forward to hearing your take!

  • the only reason Bill Evans would be turning in his grave would be cause his soul is rocking out to this beast display of musicianship over his awesome work

  • One More good job...!!!

    Thanks !

  • very nice

  • Excellent work, I really enjoy it!

    Well done as usual, Tom!

    Take care,

    Atanas

  • amazing my friend

  • Where are your CD? I Want it NOW!!!

  • This is Insane Tom , so fluid.

Do you know a John Kelly by any chance? From LCM

  • Yeah I know John. We're good mates. We tend to get together and jam with John playing proper 'manly' jazz lines and me shredding my ass off! I can play jazz when I try really hard! Is he your guitar teacher?

  • Yeah , He's my guitar teacher , he told me you and him are alike haha . But yeah , it's good to know you came from the same place I go to.

  • John's an amazing player - serious jazz chops! I'm sure he's a great teacher.

  • Wow!Amazing Tom!Clean shred+Great melodies+Great timing = Tom :D

  • tom that is too sick man, really fluid and smooth I loved it.

  • Smooth, fluid, and tasteful as always. The only thing missing was stuffed sheep...

  • I need that HD video quality! what are you using to record Tom?

  • An Xacti HD700 camera. Pretty cheap but good HD camera.

  • it looks nice, am I able to link the camera up as a webcam, and use it directly on iMovie, the same way i would use the built in camera?

    Definitely considering getting one now

  • Very good! :-)

  • Wow Tom, that was great man! Very melodic...I would think Bill would have enjoyed it too : )

  • Derryl, you too are a "smoking player," and I must assume that you two "legato-gods" have a mutual-admiration-society going with each other!!!

Tom is a great musician, a great teacher, and a great person!!!

  • BTW, what are you using to get that tone ?

  • Just guitar straight into a mesa boogie express 5:25 head and orange 1x12 cab mic'd up with an SE electronics SE3. Recorded straight into logic. Thanks for the kind words!

  • Congratulations !! Your playing is terrific !! Great phrasing and scale/arpeggio use...

  • Lovely stuff!!..

Terrific phrasing on this...and what a great touch...!

    Really enjoyed this Tom!

    Cheers

    Pete

  • Awesome improv! Nice flow, nice feel and killer licks.

  • sounds terrific Tom!

  • Cheers Nick!

Hope all is well with you!

  • Very fluid playing Tom! Thats a refreshing take on a tune where normally soloists would be really straight arsed and play solos we`ve heard a million times. Thanks for the lovely music.

  • Thanks Floyd. I love your playing.

    All the best,

    Tom

  • Why does Youtube put all my responses together at the top of the page!? So frustrating. Sorry guys - I replied to you all!

  • what pickups do you have in that guitar? i love your tone. also, are you using a pedal, or the overdrive channel on the boogie in your other vids?

  • Thanks - it's just the guitar straight into the amp on the burn channel. No effects except for a tiny bit of delay from Logic after recording. The pickups are the stock IBZ ones that came with the guitar. Weirdly I hate them! Ha!

  • I dont know who Bill Evans is, but that was beautiful man!

  • Thanks! Bill Evans was a phenominal and revolutionary jazz pianist.

  • you make it look so effortless .. how ?

  • Um...don't know. If you were to see my face I'm pulling all kinds of crazy faces!!! ;-)

  • unbelievably inspiring playing as per usual!

  • Cheers Jack!

  • Wild man... Did you get to see George's prize yet?

  • What prize! The man's been keeping secrets from me!!!! No tea for George!

  • I think not... pop on your three second kettle and check out the prize!

  • Ah! The teapot! I can't wait to see it. What an awesome idea!

  • I LOVED what you did around 4:18

  • Wow, I love it! Your tone is amazing. You sound plenty "convincing" here. Traditionalists would only be mad because you can make this sound awesome and they have a bit more trouble doing so.

  • LOL... so true!

  • haha! I like that a lot! Thanks...

  • bill evans writes some great changes :) rhscheryl nyc

  • He sure does! I think he's written some of my favourite changes to play over.

  • hope we can jam one day t :)

  • That'd be fantastic! I went to New York in 2004 and I'd love to go back. If I do we should hook up for a jam!

  • amazing job my friend!!!!

  • Cheers!
