I think some people are just stresses out too much. Yes, there is a lot happening around the World, and has always been the case. Now, with Internet, we have far easier access to news 24/7. You can find and read about tragedies and catastrophes non-stop if you want - or conspiracy theories for that matter.

The fact is sane people usually have light-hearted moments, even soldiers in Iraq play PS3 or Wii when they are off-duty. So I don't think this is a "plot to distract the sheep".
