Well, yes and no.

Burt Reynolds was way better in Boogie Nights than Robin Williams was in Good Will Hunting, this is true. But the academy was always going to go the populist, people pleasing route. Remember, these are the clowns who said Dances With Wolves was a better film than Goodfellas, that Forrest Gump was superior to Shawshank Redemption AND Pulp Fiction.

Also, when it came out, Reynolds disassociated himself with Boogie Nights. So him not winning is a kind of karma.
