It is massively arrogant that Shatner calls the documentary "How William Shatner Changed the World" instead of "How Gene Roddenberry Changed the World" or "How Star Trek Changed the World", disrespecting Roddenberry who is the real hero. Shatner is an egomaniac who just happened to be chosen for that role as Captain and is hardly the cornerstone of technological developments Star Trek inspired. I like the guy, don't get me wrong, just saying EGO FREAK, and apparently proud of it!
@ItalianBandit What do you mean? I watched this on tv, it's a two hour documentary called How William Sharner Changed the World, a docu by William Shatner. It's truly a brilliant docu esp for Trekkers like myself, but the only joke is that Bill Shatner thinks he's to be credited for all the technology inspired by S.T.
I stayed up till midnight watching this on knowledge network. It started at 10 at night. My friend was sleeping over and she got mad at me for keeping her up with "That Star Trek $hit"
Got the documentary from a video shop a while ago, it's quite entertaining to watch. The guy who invented the Motorola flip phone was inspired by the Enterprise communicator thingy. So William Shatner really changed the world - with the help of some friends.
Can someone please tell me what was the name of the Star Trek Speacial where William Shatner hosted. It was a lot funnier then this, They beamed Jonathen Franks out of bed in his pajamams.
That isn't a different show, you are talking about this one. I watched this a few days ago and that scene is in this documentary. :)
And yes, Star Trek changed the world, though I think not as much as it should've. It's good that we made advancements in technology because of it but I'd like to see other aspects to come true as well.
William Shatner is a wonderful person, a great actor and very funny guy. :) Damn, I miss Boston Legal and Denny Crane so much. :(
I've had the pleasure of meeting and working with Mr. Shatner on several occasions. He's a great guy. Funny too. I was so relieved to find this out because I'm a big fan of his.
@GodoftheGeeks Yes indeed. It was easier to be cool when the captain isn't always trying to be PC and every show isn't trying to make a social statement. Some of Shatner's shows did, of course, but not in the soppy ways of TNG.

You think Shatner can act? but Stewart can't? That's absolute bogus.. at least Stewart can pull a scene without moving his voice up and down in a mellow dramatic way like a tard.
Well for any reason Stewart sounded dull, the original Star Trek was a comedy. lol Couldn't you tell? the way shatner always slept with alien women. after the great reception it became a franchise as wide if not wider than SW.. And why since the new movie adapts from the original series, it doesn't retain the old charm that made it cheesy in the first place.. aka Shatner.. not a huge Star Trek fan but I do enjoy the next generation a lot more than the original.
people say it's cheesy cos simply cos it's old. they say it looks camp and it's not fancy and flashy like TNG but it sure has its charms if you look past the 1960s elements and the low budget
People, don't you realize, as Wormcatchin says, Shatner is all about self-parody? How many people can make fun of themselves like Shatner? It's brilliant; but he is right, ST did change the world, like it or not. It paved the way....
well there was no ipods on star trek, but there was personal computers, that small comunicators, and the ones that create the software that alloed to play music an video on a pc, got the idea from star trek tng, thats why they mention the ipos and that stuff
damn dont know why people take that stuff so literal, he didnt say it seriously, that documentarya was intendent to be funny...But if the thing is that you just dont like shatner, well is ok,that doesnt make it arrogant, lol just dont take hin seriously, have a nice day dude.
I assume that's Shatner on self-parody mode... I HOPE so, otherwise the man has a pretty high opinion of 'jimself'. Must be his genetic inability to act... which I find kinda charming.
This is just bullshit. If you've seen it, by about half way through they go off star trek's influences. This isn't so great because if you look at many movies or shows, they all have their own ideas that have changed the world, but only IDEAS. Like H.g wells came up with the idea of time transportation...and the idea of the transporter and automatic doors cam before star trek.
Time transportation has yet to be invented! The transporter hasnt really been invented (only for atomic particles and radio signals). Star Trek featured much more than just automatic doors.
I ment the IDEA of transportation. Star trek didn't actually ivent anything so it isn't quite as amazing as REAL movie breakthroughs that really changed the world like Toy story (first 3d film) and star wars, e.t.c
This is cute. I sure would have been sucked into that show, had I seen the teaser! I like when he gets into the car and goes ripping at warp speed thru LA. An actually FUNNY clip of him for once. The poor guy is often given such crap dialogue, but this Discovery Channel thing seems pretty good.
I just bought this for 99 cents at Best Buy on Black Friday... well the day after Black Friday lol.
99 cents!!!!!!... I think that was the original price XD

Yeah.
In 1966 Star Trek anticipated the cellphone.
In 2009 It's making placements for Nokia.
Future scientists and thinkers will find their inspirations somewhere else.-_-
