mate i have been in the navy five and a half years and i enjoy evry day that it offers me. i joined as a bosun's mate an i am really glad i did, it has given me direction and a secure job. but you do need to ask yourself if this job is what you want because we get moved around a lot and it can be tough some times. so it is up to you but you will enjoy
ahh do you like painting? haha its a fun job at times but it does have it down side like having to paint the ship and also when you get out the RAN the only thing you can do is become a Police Officer or get into security look at jobs like marine technician or a avionics technician or a cook even so when you leave the Navy you have something to do. but it is great that your looking into join the RAN and good that your thinking about your rate and not just running into it.
Are you in the Navy? I was looking to join or at least try it through th GAP year after my final year of school. If I like it enough may stay in ADF permanently and not worry about Uni. Thats assuming they will accept me for the GAP year as it seems quite competitive.

@NAVY76 Not everybody who leaves the service necessary falls back on the same qualifications once they leave. Even trade qualified ratings often go into much different career avenues than just continuing on with their same job... Stokers dont become motor mechanics, ETs become electricians, cooks go onto hospitality etc.. not like the good old bad old days.

I think this 'hero' term is getting over used... Should reserve that for the Special Forces only.. the rest are there to make up the numbers and look good in uniform.
I think the ADF nowadays has become more of a one way ticket job for most people rather than just a 'challenge' (as we often described it in our day). Sure there's some there that are joining because of relatives and family history, but with the looming shithouse recession there's really no other choice for many young people to go for a stable job and income. Sure beats working in a casual shit-house job for years on end with no guarantee and or relying on CES!
it's a pity some people just see it merely as a recession 'beater'. Sure, its a stable job, but as a serving RAN officer, I'd like to think that patriotism and sense of adventure may also motivate people to enlist -not a pay cheque (which by the way isn't too bad once you get all the 'at-sea' bonuses on offer.

I knew of a couple that were openly gay and I'm sure a few that kept it to themselves.
I never heard of them having any issues at all.
You are all there to do a job. What you get upto behind closed doors is your business.
Pull your weight and keep your preferences out of the work place and you'll be fine.
The ADF is just a reflection of society.
Nearly everything you find in the civilian world, there will be a few in the forces too.
To think there isn't is just naive folks.

I think the ADF nowadays has become more of a one way ticket job for most people rather than just a 'challenge' (as we often described it in our day). Sure there's some there that are joining because of relatives and family history, but with the looming shithouse recession there's really no other choice for many young people to go for a stable job and income. Sure beats working in a casual shit-house job for years on end with no guarantee and or relying on CES!

Sure, its a stable job, but as a serving RAN officer, I'd like to think that patriotism and sense of adventure may also motivate people to enlist -not a pay cheque (which by the way isn't too bad once you get all the 'at-sea' bonuses on offer.

The funny thing is about that there is more gays in the RAAF than the Navy gays in the Navy get bashed and it is the same in the Army I know a guy who just finished traing at Kapooka and he said there was 2 gays in his unit and they got the shit smashed out of them it is always people who are in the RAAF or RAAF Wannabies who start saying other services are gay but the truth hurts for them.
