Of course the surge is working. If you put that many troops in my neighborhood, even jay walking would stop. You should have seen the surges they did in Denver and St Paul - those worked, you can't "Recreate '68" with that many troops in town. The question is whether we can get out not how long can we stay. People under stress say a lot of things. It's a point of weakness for most people. The media will actually ask questions in a way that attempts to manipulate a negative answer out of Soldiers. That is what you're seeing.

No that's not what I'm saying at all. Morale when a person is deployed can change minute to minute. I've been deployed AND interviewed by the media. The drama is what sells and the best reporters know how to egg that drama on. They do it all the time, not just in Iraq.

I don't know exactly what media you are talking about when it comes to this war but from what I can see the media has been doing a good job of promoting the view that most of the deployed troops support this and the views of the pentagon that they are making progress

That is because a LOT of effort has been put into ensuring that Soldiers know how to talk to reporters... "stay in your lane, don't speculate, and when you aren't sure if you want to talk to the media, refer them to Public Affairs." The media is also not often out where Soldiers are fighting in anything resembling a large number, so the media isn't exposed to highly stressed Soldiers very often. Anyway, I stand by what I said...
