@AirWaterLandBuffalo It's called a lap steel, a variant of the guitar format, played by the guitarist Steve Howe. A pure and beautiful sound, isn't it? You can see it being played by Howe in a live video on youtube: /watch?v=WybjHMUTFhM (I can't post the full link here ... just add youtube dot com to the front)
@AirWaterLandBuffalo more great examples are Woodstock by Matthew's Southern Comfort and Led Zeppelin's That's The Way, played by Gordon Huntley and Jimmy Page respectively :)
These guys are tops but, IMHO, an oft ignored guy making them so great is Eddie Offord. I have heard several performances of all their greats and, to me, the Offord mixed version always has something special that the others lack.
I'm not saying that the Yes musicians aren't great, they are. I'm saying that Offord added a special polish that brought out the absolute tops in Yes. The picking out & blending of the slide guitar and the vocals in this song is a good example.
I was 19 years old and had to go through a little operation (hernia). I had my Sony Walkman (yes - THE WAY to listen to music at the time) with me. I instructed the nurse to place my Sennheiser phones on my head and press the play button after I'd come from the operation, dizzy with anasthetics. - And she did so! - That was the song I heard - THE GATES OF DELIRIUM! Unforgettable especially the end! -"Soon" really makes you cry when you hear it at the end of all that battle music.
The absolute best, never to be repeated version of this song.At least from Steve Howe's perspective. That guy is one of the world's sloppiest guitar players in a live performance context. He IS brilliant, don't get me wrong!Irreplaceable too!But I saw him live with YES several times and he was by far the worst performer onstage.Maybe people give him too much credit.
@komimakojaketu I don't know what performance you saw, maybe he had a bad night or something... Because the time I saw him playing live he did great, when somebody in the public did some kind of noise, the rest would make him shut up haha... And the performances I've seen in videos are really good too! So, I just can't agree with your statement.
@Bedulonko Obviously you don't play guitar so it's pointless to discuss the subtleties of the matter with you.I respect him for what he is:one of the key factors of all things YES.But for my tastes,he had too many bad nights. To his credit, the parts he plays are incredibly complex and demanding.BUT he composed those parts and I (as a listener who paid the ticket to see him and his band) expect of Mr Howe to perform as close to the original recordings as possible. Not just in the ballpark.
@komimakojaketu Yeah I'm not a guitar player, so what? I payed for a ticket to see him too, and he didn't have one of those bad night you are talking about at all. And the concerts I've seen in videos, the live recordings, etc. are all pretty good and close to the originals, apart from variations he does (on purpose obviously)... He might have had bad nights just like anyone else, but I don't agree that his live performances aren't of the same quality as his playing in the studio.
@komimakojaketu, why would you expect Howe to perform as close to the original recordings as possible? people often go to see live music because it is live as opposed to a studio recording.
and if howe had too many bad nights for your tastes, then why would you continue to go see him play? your logic escapes me.
one doesn't have to play guitar to appreciate how someone else plays their guitar.
@flyfysher I expect him to play as close to the original recordings as possible simply because he played so much BETTER on them it's not even funny. He keeps playing 'in the ballpark',forgetting to play bits and pieces that made those original recordings such incredible, timeless works of art.Maybe you should sharpen your listening skills a little to get my point.
I didn't go to see SH specifically.I went to see YES.None of the other guys disappointed, they kept outperforming themselves!SH sucked.
@komimakojaketu you do yourself a disservice with your condescension. howe may have performed poorly. i haven't seen yes in years. but if you went to see yes, then realize the unpolished version occasionally comes off better. artists don't always strive for technical perfection. maybe the studio gives them that ability which performing live doesn't. you may want to temper your expectations.
Jon should have stoped smoking and drinking his vodka and tonics long ago.I stiil believe we will listen as we all did all those many years ago. Yes is the answer,We r in trouble folks and Yes will get us through.
I have seen Yes 7 times. I was going to buy meet and greet tickets till I found out that Jon was ill with his asthma, and they hired Benoît David from a tribute band. It's just not the same. Sorry boys. A fav. album? oh my, not too sure if I could chose one???? They are all so good!! I was lucky enough on concert "ladder tour" tour and got to meet Chris, Jon and Steve. It was wonderful!!
Jon is still playing, just solo stuff and school orchestra doing tales, WOW!! it was amazing.
Too bad the music (comparatively speaking) has died a slow painful death at the hands of greedy music producers and cookie cutter hit song mentality that permeates what passes for the music scene today.
Anderson has the most beautiful "man" voice. I must climb mountains to the south side of the sky, and awaken before the gates of delerium within the fragile, yet menacing tormato, somewhere close to the edge of the 90125 zip code, in order to inherit his voice, in my next life.
Hymn-like gem in the Yes catalogue. When I first bought Relayer I didn't understand it well and I was a too big fan of CLOSE TO THE EDGE. Little by little I found out the proportions of the album in terms of progressive rock. What an emotional segment they created here. 6 thumbs up.
@clyde8her " I am not happy about the rebirth of the Jesuits. Swarms of them will present themselves with more disguises ever taken by even a chief of the Bohemians - as printers, writers, school teachers, etc. If ever an association of people deserved eternal damnation, on this earth and in hell, it is this Society of Loyola (1816).
@clyde8her Have we succeeded? We think so. Before long we shall have covered with our narratives an enormous period of time; between the "Comtesse de Salisbury' and the "Comte de Monte Christo" five centuries and a half are compresed. Well, we assert that we have taught France as much history about those five centuries and a half as any historian. This passage is from The Companions of Jehu which was written by Alexandre Dumas pere.
@clyde8her This passage is from The Companions of Jehu--page 396--"You are ninnies! I have cheated all the time we've been playing, and you never found out. Those who lost can take their money back." Born and bred in the Catholic faith, Bonaparte had no preference for any dogma. When he re-established divine worship it was done as a political act, not as a religous one.
Soon oh soon the light Pass within and soothe THIS endless night And wait here for you Our reason to be here Soon oh soon the time All we move to gain will reach and calm Our heart is open Our reason to be here Long ago, set into rhyme Soon oh soon the light Ours to shape for all time, ours the right The sun will lead us Our reason to be here The sun will lead us Our reason to be here
