@lasermac83 I honestly don't know and I don't have the controller anymore. I would think you could as long as you don't go over that channels max wattage rating with two fans combined. But I'm not possitive.
@MN12BIRD Alright! I'll get one of these anyway and try it with 2 3w fans so I would have 4w headroom left. I don't really want to use a Y-splitter so I hope the molex and 3-pin connectors work at the same time.
i made my friend buy this one and it works fine. no humming problem.
humming is basically caused by the frequency of the pulses. in practical it can be changed by changing a capacitor which provides the pulsating movement.
NZXT have made some seriously bad mistakes. all the fans i use for my computer are on the list of fans which make that buzzing sound with this controller. i didnt buy it thank god. then i saw a Sentry LX which is practically the same thing but without the buzzing. looks great, except they have fucked up royally. the LX supports 3 pin fans ONLY. no molex. and most build in case fans use molex and havnt got a 3 pin attached. what kind of marketing is that?!?! plus the LX uses 2 expansion slots!
Thanks! My PC came with this controller and no instructions. I didn't notice the "auto" / "manual" seeting, so when it came with auto set, I thought something was wrong becuase my + / - buttons didn't work. Besides my PSU, Graphics Card, and CPU cooler (CoolerMaster V) I'm running 4 other fans and they are very quiet...in fact, I don't notice a difference when I have them all turned off and then press "auto" to activate those 4 fans. If not for my V6 CPU fans, it would be silent!
Hey, thanks a lot for the full review. I was thinking about getting this or the nMEDIAPC Black fan controller and media reader. The touch interface of this seemed nice, but those cons are pretty down there. Thanks for helping me to make a good decision. ^_^
This product sucks. I just got one and it didn't work with my Enermax Apollish Vegas or 140 Noctua and 120 Noctua nf-s12b. I'm now going to swap this product to Aerocool. I really hope that these fans will work with Aerocool. Can u please tell me what Aerocool to buy or does Aerocool have any problems with any fans. I'm thinking of Aerocool V12XT or the touch 1000. Awesome review btw. Your the only one to tell about the problems of this Nzxt controller. Thanks for that!
@kalidoresdan I've never used the Aerocool touch 1000 but from what I've heard it has none of the issues of this one can can drive bigger fans with higher amperag draw too so those big fans should be fine. But I can't say for sure. Just what I've heard.
The rattling sound you hear is caused by the fancontroller, not the fans themselves. It has something to do with unfiltered output, but the fancontroller is to blame. NZXT has admitted there is a problem and is trying to fix it. I the mean time, I'm not sure anyone wants to buy this controller.
Take a look at (triple w) (dot) nzxt (dot) com/forum/showthread.php?7146-NZXT-Sentry-2-fans-strange-noice
I was considering buying this until I saw your video - I have three aftermarket 120mm case fans in an Antec 300 case and they're loud so I can safely assume getting this fan controller won't make my fans any more silent. Great review!
Also, I have the same CPU cooler as you, from what I can see in the video, you only have one fan attached to the heatsink or do you have two? I'm thinking about getting another fan but I can't find one that has the "claws" that snap onto the heatsink.
@breakfastjak Yeah it's the Cooler Master Hyper 212 plus IIRC and it's pretty good for the price actually really good! I'm only using the one 120mm fan it came with but that does the job for me.
@dillonjbritt The Cooler Master 212? You using it on an Intel or AMD? You have to put the backing plate in the correct way for Intel or AMD but other than that it should fit anything you put it on it supports all the current sockets.
yep was bout to buy this controller also but not now, im running a Cooler master 932 with the 230mm fans and its quite and i dont want to make them load so, guess my search continues
I have this fan controller, although with some fans it causes a loud and annoying screech no matter the RPM. Not sure why it does this but only does it with certain fans.
im planning to get an Asaka Apache fan for an exhaust better than the noctua fans
id rather have better fans quiet push more air rather than a fan controller this one sounds kinda shit after it looking promising, i hate that the features are cool but there is always some flaw in it
Hi Jake, I will be getting a gaming pc soon that will probably have an Intel i3 CPU inside and I will probably be doing some safe and stable overclocking, so I would like to control my fan speeds easily. This makes your case look better, such a shame about the buzzing problem.
I see you're using the Coolermaster Hyper 212 Plus CPU cooler. I have that cooler in my system, too. I think it's pretty good for the price.
Looked like a pretty decent fan controller, unfortunate about the buzzing problem.
I need one myself for my Lian Li PC-P50. I wanted my internals to look nice, so I hooked everything up using the molex connectors so all the case fans are running at 100%, kind of unnecessary. Maybe I'll look into the Lian Li fan controllers (if they're good).
@Enfeeblement Yeah the 212 is great. Really amazing cooler for the price. Check out the Areocool touch 1000 it costs quite a bit more than this and only has 4 fan/4 temp channels BUT it has higher wattage, no issues with PWM noise and the screen has a better viewing angle.
@CatemacoRock Much less than you would think. Some of the parts I bought off people and got good deals. It's hard to say because I bought parts here and there. I would say if I had to buy everything I have new now and built it over again it would probably be about $1,000.
hmmm seems like it would have been a cool idea, and if It had a remote or something it would have been perfect for me! (quiet my comp down when watching a movie) but alas!
I had this NZXT for awhile and ended up replacing it with a manual knobs fan controller. Find all the touch screen doodads to be to cumbersome when you have the pc tower facing sideways.
@RetroGamerr1991 Thats the issue I talked about at the end of the video. Those fans are quiet off direct power or the mobo but on the controller they sound like the bearings are shot!
Its bad enough my kid keeps ejecting my DVD drive and pressing my reset button if I had one of these my fans would be abused in ways I cannot describe lol.
i cant see a use of a product like that unless you are recording music in your home studio and dont want to pick up the computer's fans... but then you run the risk of over heating the machine while multi tracking.
@MrDebauch That's true even I need to turn the fans down when I record with my mic. But if you have high performance fans like 2 to 3K RPM fans you can still slow them down to a near quiet level and have enough cooling when you aren't overclocking or gaming like crazy or something like that.
some people I have seen they have their towers in a seperate room even haha.. but also I have seen isolation cases that you put the entire tower into. I think they are only effective if you do a lot of recording though because both those options aren't practical on the day to day systems.
@MN12BIRD Sure, some computers may be loud. But I have a PowerMac G5 with a dead logic board; I once in a while turn it on and it's as loud as a jet (or close to one, ha)!
You have one of the coolest computers I've seen -- I would *try* to make an identical copy, but Newegg no longer sells the glass side panel, which is what I really wanted :'( That and I'm terrible at cable management...
I've always liked the idea of using those things but in reality, I think the computer does a good job at mantaining fan controls. I never had problems with over heating with computers. I make sure the inside of the cast has clear air paths entering from the front and exiting the back of the case.
@crusherbad64 case fans usually just run at 12v (max speed) continuously and are generally not controlled by the computer. Running at these speeds they can be very loud and annoying. Hence why people get fan controllers.
That sucks because it looks pretty neat. The only other issue i'd have with it is it the color. They should have it in a solid color (blue, red, yellow, green etc). But that's just me. Looks like something out of Star Trek almost.
@HybridPineapple Well it wouldn't be bad if the thing didn't induct all that PWM noise into the motors on some fans. I tell you on my 2k RPM Cooler Master fans they are nice and smooth off direct power or the mobo but on here they sound like the bearings are shot! They're only .35A fans too and yet my Lian Li fans are the ones that are .85A just pushing the 10 Watt limit and they're quite as normal on here.
@37474748 My 4870 is special and it doesn't need them to run... Nah not really I was just getting ready to clean out the PC, change fans and clean up some wires right after I did the video and I had to take the video card out so I just left it like that for the video.
I agree with the the fan noise issue... I installed this on a clients computer and I was surprised by how load it makes the fans. He was running 120mm cool master fans.. He ended up returning the NZXT 2 and buying an el' cheapo 4 fan controller that worked much better...
@linuxfanman Yeah it's too bad isn't it. It's loud with my Cooler Master 2k RPM fans too. I plug the fans into PSU or Mobo and they're not noisy, plug them into Sentry 2 and damn they sound like the bearings are shot!
@therealAgerbon Dell fans sometimes have proprietary connectors on them but otherwise if you can hook them up it should work. You might have to rig up the jacks but it's only 2 wires +12V and ground. But then again I can't recommend this one as you saw. Get the Aerocool touch 1000 if you really want a good 5.25" touch controller.
@MN12BIRD ah, because when it gets really hot in my room i am unaware of the speed that my fan is working, because i plan to do a custom job with my pc and add a external Fan to the side (sodder job) without connecting it directly to the power supply to my rig to reduce the need for a upgrade of a power supply haha
I don't really understand why these products even exist because most case fans aren't loud to begin with, well unless they are dying and if that is the case they don't need modulation they need replacement.
On a side note, I seriously felt my brain aching from the beeping of the button presses :(
@rubbara Yeah for the most part you're right. But those Cooler Master 2K RPM fans I have aren't that quiet and some of the hardcore OC guys are running 3K RPM fans. Those things are LOUD! I could definitely want fan speed control on those. But the average 120mm case fan is like 1,600 RPM and not loud at all.
@kreeboy411 Yeah I'd almost say go for the Aerocool touch 1000 if you want a single 5.25 controller even though it costs more and only has 4 fan/4 temp channels it doesn't have the issues this one has. Also the screen is supposed to have a better viewing angle so if your case is on the floor you can still easily read the screen looking down at it.
