I absolutely lived Ukraine. I lived there for three years and even married a Ukrainian. In regards to the Soviet stuff... I definitely wouldn't be surprised if schools in the East and Crimea kept the stuff in storage, but in this Western village, which didn't become Soviet until 1944, they are fiercely anti-USSR. The Lenin statue came down immediately. In place of the USSR stuff was Taras Shevchenko and Bohdan Khmelnysky portraits and other stuff related to pre-USSR Ukrainian history.
congrats on your marriage! :) I know what you mean by how the east is different in some ways, but I came from a village in Chernivtsi, which is in the west also, and a lot of the stuff in our schools just got put in storage, statutes of the Red Army are still there, most of them. What people hated wasn't necessarily communism, but basically russians. even today!

In regards to Ukrainians being more respectful than Americans...I think it depends on individual people, I don't think a person can say, "All Ukrainians are more respectful than all Americans" or vice versa. There are polite and rude Americans, there are polite and rude Ukrainians. Of course, "respect" depends on cultural expectations. For example, in Ukraine people (even strangers) would always offer to share food with me, which is wonderful!
In America, people would never share food. Also, in Ukraine the people respect their elders more than in America and Ukrainians value friendships more than Americans. But on the other hand, many Ukrainians don't respect private space as much as we do in America. For example, Ukrainians rarely knocked on my door, they would simple open the door without knocking. In America we would consider that rude. And Ukrainians also often asked me how much money I make, which isn't what Americans do.
But in general, I will say that some of the most wonderful people that I've ever met were Ukrainians and Ukraine will always be a part of my life. My wife and I are hoping to return to Ukraine in spring of 2009! Thanks again for your questions and good luck!

This was filmed in 2004, so the Soviet stuff had long since been put in a garbage can.
