Great video! The Santa Fe had somthing like that on Cajon pass in the steam era wherby the helpers would back the caboose up an incline track and they would set the breaks on the caboose and alowe the helpers to back past the switch, once in the clear, the caboose would coast back to the train and ooward it would go.
I am a switchman for CSX. They kicked the cars past the switch then did a static drop into the next track. There is no such thing as a car with a chip in it that allows it to roll. It is obviously a down hill grade.
its called 'Kicking the Cars' I've seen it done in the CSX Rochester yard. the GP-38s will get a few cars, and then it will power up to like 5mph, and stop dead, and the cars are cut off, they roll away, into their proper track.
basically they are performing a sort of flying switch to save time. first they shove the cars back and uncouple and stop the engine while the cars roll past the switch, brakeman applys the handbrake, throws the switch and then releases the handbrake so the cars roll down the slight grade into the siding.
They are special cars with a special chip in them that allows them to move!!!!I heard about it while at the North Platte Yard in Nebraska!!!!Pretty koool huh dude!;o)
