@kevinatkinson1986 probably one of my favourite movies. I have seen it at least 10 times....my kids laugh at me because i used to call it..." other peoples lives" anyway fantastic movie......
Amazing movie. In my heart I wanted so much more glory for him in the end, but the choice was as spot on as every other in the movie. Thank you for sharing it with us.
Powerful movie. I like how they didn't go for the meeting between Dreyman and Wiesler, and instead opted for the much more subtle ending. But in many ways Wiesler is still a sad functionary, alone and unloved, so he sacrificed a lot while Dreyman became a famous author
One of the odd things for me about this powerful film is that the first time I saw it, Captain Wiesler was clearly a hostile, creepy character at the outset, but in later viewings, knowing how the central character evolves, I feel sympathy for him even at the beginning. I look at Wiesler now as a good man who is only at the beginning of his wonderful transformation. What a loss to the world was Ulrich Muhe's death.
I seldom get moved by such a trivial thing as a movie...this would be an exception...I almost feel that the last line and frame might as well be a homage for Ulrich, even though I know he died after the movie was released. Incredibly touching.
I was born and raised in Germany (Dinkelsbuehl) until 1975. After my parents divorced, I came to live in the US with my Mother. My Father was born and raised in what became East Berlin, and he escaped to the west in 1960. I grew up with all the stories about The Wall, the Russians and the Stassi. This is a very good movie, and I watched it with great interest. Thank goodness for the english subtitles as my german isn't so good anymore, but I did understand most of it.
really wonderful movie, thank you very much for posting. Nevertheless, I do not understand, that von Donnersmarck next film is The Tourist. How could the same author can direct so much different films in quality? This is a masterpiece, Tourist is absolute Hollywood sh.ty crap. Or they will manipulate really everybody? Just wondering....
Uhm, american beauty has a pretty good last line, there will be blood has a killer last like aswell, the usual suspects and so many, but yes this movie has a great last line
@jammy2k77 i cannot think of any. it almost looks as though he is smiling a bit in the end. like someone who is content. ulrich mühe was one of our greatest actors and his beautiful daughter will some day probably be as great as him.
@jammy2k77 ok i'll give an example .... even though i absolutely love this movie - still i don't think this is the best ending line of any film - sure it is sweet and heart-warming - but the bulk of the movie was what amazed me - i think pacino's "no" in the godfather is my favorite ending line...that gave me the chills
Captivating, horrifying, enlightening, thought provoking. A must see for the younger generation that has never known that "Big Brother" government really can and did happen. Conveys hope and hopelessness. It truly deserves the Oscar it won for best foreign film ... and I dare say it should have won for best film period.
Thank you very much for taking the time to subtitle this movie. It is a great film that has left a good message in me. Inspiring acting on all parts and a excellent story of the good in people that at first glance may seem too far down that you think people might never change or even in the best of us ill decisions will surface in times of despair, fear, or unknowing.
@suidorimu yeah, I had to watch it for a uni class too. Most of the movies we have to watch are boring and weird with bad acting. However, this movie was phenomenal!
Americans are naive to the evil of socialism. It'll only be when they are living in tyrrany as depicted by this movie that they will finally wake up and do something about it. Make no mistake, this brand of socialism has started with Obama. Thank God Americans will reject it in the end but, for now, they don't see it and it's beginning to envelop us.
fantastic film.. I'm not moved by movies very often (beyond sentimentality), but the way the East, and the barbarity of the Stassi was executed (particularly the culture minster), made me want to wretch... I was crawling in my skin when when Christa was in the limo...
Its bee just few hours that I came back from an academic research visit of Berlin. Visited Stazi Prison, their archives and basically everything from second world war till November 9th 1989.
This movie is the best they could show about East Germany. Even they recorded which comic book and child of who was reading. One Stazi was assigned to keep eye on 8 to 10 people.
A superb movie. To really understand everything, it helps a lot to go to Berlin. To feel the remains and scars in the city. How the german people suffered under the communist state. Many people born during that communist period in Berlin are still alive. And you can see scars on their face...
I usually don't give a thing about movies , but this movie has struck me and made me sad. I feel bad for Wiesler tho , he gave up his caree and ends up as a simple lonely mail man.
Don't you feel as if the whole movie was just created to lead into this perfect ending? Could there have been a better last line? Ulrich Mühe, rest in piece...
Say what you want about Wieslers previous deeds, but I find him to be a hero. He gave up his entire career and put himself in danger while helping Dreyman, and he never asked for anything in return. Nor do we see any signs of him regretting his actions afterwards.
these moments depicted in the film were countless. east Germans can get their files that the Stasis held. and there are dedicated teams deciphering till this day the shredded documents. so fascinating.
@Isaiah101 Thank you for replying, I am English but having watched this film and some documentaries i've become curious about tthe U.S.S,R. And more importantly East Germanys role in it do you know of any further reading about East Germany/Berlin? Sorry to bother you. Many Thanks Daniel
thanks, great movie!!!! i will pray for all of us because we are getting way to close to something like this with this administration they want to control the internet , talk radio, and the air we breath for starters god bless!!!!!
this is ought to be the most brilliant ending. cashier: " want it gift-wrapped?". HGW: "no, it's for me" with a look on his face of immense gratitude. how ironic that HGW starts the movie by saying that a criminal or a bad guy never changes. and then we see him having completely change to a guy that sees the evil within him and his system of believe, such a brilliant story.
Bravo! Thank you for your efforts in getting this posted. If only my countrymen would learn the lesson that comes from East Germany's history. The Patriot Act, the Department of Homeland Security and the TSA, CIA, FBI, DEA, DIA, NSA, DOD, NRO, ATF, ONI, ICE and countless other covert, alphabet-soup agencies are all the precursors to this totalitarian nightmare. Lord help us all...
it is not a true story with these persons. but it could have been. as we look back in history stasi behave exactly like this, people have been observated like this, treatment with actors , suicid because of faith and so one....by the way the fact that DDR had the highest rate on suicid after hungary but denied it is true
The only part I disagreed with was not showing Wiesler with the typewriter in his posession. Why did he take it to protect the girl? But damn good movie. Also, Wielser is a ringer for Kevin Spacey, no??
@kgiant24 he take it to protect her because while he worked on this observation he began to understand how important art is (you see it how wiesler enjoys listen to the music while observation and how he starts to understand what had been wrong in theDDR when Dreyer and his friends talked about the suicids etc in his flat)
