  • Does it not get hot around your other fingers though? Yesterday as I welding (I have no tig finger yet) My finger was a centimeter or so from the weld and my glove still ended up smoking after a long weld. Will the same not happen to fingers that don't have a heat shield on them when they are that close?

  • Need advice please, got crack on my Exhaust manifold (cast iron) Ford taures about 6IN, do you recommend to weld it in stead of replace it , and how much it will cost(approximately) if took it to shop to weld it...Thanks in Advance

  • @roro560v8 cast iron is very very hard to weld and most guys wont weld it i might look at your other options before you tried to weld it, but then again if its just a small crack it wouldnt be to hard i guess to weld but it looks like shit and doesnt hold good

  • I just watched this again. I'm not a welder, but I'm still interested. Ok, here comes the newbie dumb question: When you weld efffectively 'upside down', how come the molten weld metal doesn't run downhill, if you know what I mean? OK, stop laughing, now. Helpful and knowledgable answers appreciated. Thanks.

  • It can, and it does run downhill/drip sometimes, it usually means that your heat settings are too high.

  • @stillbashingmetal without knowing the science, metal kinda has a surface tension like water. When in liquid form it will kinda jump to other metal that's around the same state (temperate). You can burn rod all day, but if the base metal isn't being heating to the same temperature it won't stick. It's also cooling rapidly, from 70F to over 1000F back to 70F. That's like trying to melt ice when its 930 degrees below freezing(its an analogy don't correct me people).

  • @stillbashingmetal okay, instead of upside down, its called overhead position. the metal CAN run downhill, if you are welding and form too much buildup of puddle, the puddle state is a point of molten steel, but within milimeters is formed into different semi solid states, called the Heat affected zone.

  • You make welding look so easy....but I know it isn't! Great videos, I learn something new all the time, thanks for taking the time and trouble to post.

  • Amazing!

  • I am so glad you took the time to make these awesome videos, I have been welding for some time and was shocked to see such low quality videos elsewhere. I try to learn more tricks and tips from anybody who has been welding for longer than I have. And I just wanted to thank you for teaching so many people how to do things right for once!!

  • haha check the cap on the completed butt who done that n were u steamin haha ruff as fk hehe

  • Althou I don't hold the torch the way you do...You sure do make a nice weld.. I

hold the torch by the handle..my index finger and thumb are very close to the valve.

I do my root pass much the same..excellent video..

  • Damn fine videos

  • A guy wthat went to Hobart welding school taught me a technique where you move the torch and filler rod in opposite half circles without ever pulling the rod out of the puddle. It makes a nice looking hot pass.

  • @jordofthejungle2 basically all you are going to have to do is pass a weld test. It really doesn't matter what college or school you have attended. Just apply for a job and take the test. There is an old saying when it comes to the welding field. "Go to school, get certified and go to work and we'll teach ya to weld."

  • how do you get the bevel prep so neat and perfect?

  • you didnt show me your free hand cap

  • Do the multiple passes over each weld lessen the integrity of the surrounding steel? Or does it not matter because the pressure in these pipes wont surpass tensile strength?

  • @idusclothing I'm not an expert, but for me, no matter how the overall heat will affect the surrounding material, there's no other way to weld it.

  • Just got say wow every ones saying wicked welds makes me think damn I must be god!! Lol where can I get one of those johnys for my finger defiantly a handy little tool plz sum1 tell me

  • Damn fine videos! Damn fine welding, too. Some of the best welders I've ever seen sound just like you, Jody. Makes me think that somewhere somebody's cloning you guys.

  • i lov these vids. thx and keep em coming

  • this is how i weld so u can fix it :))

i preheat start ,add wire a bit over edge of pipe and i weld

till i came to other end on cca 11-12h (top pipe) i leave some gap and i switch to other side to heat that side too

and i return back to 1h side and continue ,and i go over edge of other side of weld

make one circle and lead arc out of weld ,and shut it down

so i don't have control like on rest of pipe

some time it's "hungry", some time it boil or just make tits

    and drive me nuts

  • hi ! can someone tell me how to finish root on top of pipe ??

i have 2 bonding welds (to hold pipe before welding) one on 11h other on 6h for easy start

so i weld pipe 1/4 than switch on other side and so on till end

my and is on 2h->11h top side and every time i have problem with it .

rest root is fine and top is hungry (have hole on top)

or i have tits (steel boil's or just too much of wire)

how to weld that 2h->11h part to have same "weeding ring" shape of root ??

    from inside

  • Welding pipe in 6g position using 6010 do you use the same techinque. foward and back or make the little C's

  • @003937 i find that a very small whipping technique seems to work best for 6010 it gets a little tricky adjusting the rod angle when doing smaller pipes though. good luck!

  • Great vid. Good tip on getting suck back on the hot pass when too hot. I was getting a good root, but the next pass was causing some suck back in places as I was to hot.

I can only walk the cup on the root pass, so freehand the root is not that big of a deal.

I ordered a TIG finger, can't hurt to have better control.

  • where do you get that finger heat shield

  • I wanna put this out there...it took me awhile to get that forward and back technique however I got it now...my root's are perfect now..I still rest my cup in the bevel atleast for 2' pipe I do but forward and back is the technique now....at first I was washing it to wide and looked like no penetration in there but due to this video learning from it my root got plenty of meat in there...thank's alot for these videos....please post more...

  • Wow i like this never seen the back and forth movement thanks man i been havin issues with not enough penetration. Thanks again

  • This shows that a welder has to be able to use many different techniques to fit the situation. Many welders do it one way and that's it. I'm a fitter, but I always pay attention to what my welder is doing mainly because I hate rework. Also, anyone that says pipe welding is easy probably can't weld at all. If it was easy, we would be called plumbers.

  • Hey Jody, do you think the best way to put in a root pass in 6G pipe dip technique?

  • this guy is a kickass welder

  • @teamzero100 no youre juss gay -- cuz this shiot is easy. bam.

  • I've been a 6g pipe welder for 24 years and those are damn nice welds you layed down.

  • Good video!

  • wow good welds!!!

  • Jody, i,m working to do my 6g tig test soon. my question is... will that technique work on stainless steel, and did you have a landing on that piece?

  • Im getting old and had to do FDA cert. 304 stan steel pipe for the food industry.

never did any Tigging on something that big ,arc 7018 makes it pretty. You have very good tech going on here, you got me on putting the shield on the finger GREAT

    IDEA .

  • Im from malaysia... good job bro... nice...

  • like squirting out caulking very purdy!

  • ben fatto from italienne ...... mauronigro ...... youtube

  • those tig finder heat shields can be found at any local weld supply shop, yes?

  • tungsten inclusion at 1.41 haha

  • Beautiful man, just beautiful. You run a mean bead!!

  • How do you do I would like to order it. How can I resolve it?

  • this guy is good, really good.

  • What that on your finger ?

  • @kfagest34 did you really just ask that? HE SAID IT IN THE GOD DAMN VIDEO!!!!!!! turn on your speakers......

  • Walking the cup is much easier for me...

  • มึงไม่ร้อนมึอหรือว่ะ

  • unfortunately that heat shield is not for sale here in Portugal but I think that the fact that we have to learn how to control the TIG torch without having to walk the cup makes us better welders!!..yeah walking the cup makes it a lot easier and smoother, personally I think that the 6G/H-L045 position is easier than the 5G/PF position. specially the part when you at the bottom part of the pipe!!TIG welding's amazing!!!

  • What size filler

    rod sir?

  • WHAT DIFFERENT EQUIPMENT DO I NEED TO WELD ALUM? I USE A ARCH TIG COMBO. I DONT THINK IT HAS ACA DC CURRENT.

  • a respirator lol

  • From 6:30 to about 10 oclock is always the worst for me to get in the 6g tig.

  • gostei desse acersorio deve ser muito util.

  • I did it and it was cold lapping the bevel....not hot enough maybe???

  • Too bad they dont sell those heat shields here in Finland. Especially welding aluminium the materials gets often too hot to lean your hand on.

Thanks for nice and educational videos!

  • Beautiful! But you need to mention that when root welding you are adding the filling rod with some kind of... excess(?) to compare with the making the fillet weld.

So the welding pool is some kind of getting "swelled", like the belly ob the blood-sucking mosquito: this is the only way to get a convex weld. Well, the number of other conditions are also apply...

You are stepping back to make this cold weld (with excess of the filling rod) to fuse with the walls so on.

  • jody where did you get that thing on your finger?the strap looking thing for the heat pleas let me know so that i can use your teqnique when i start tig school.

  • excellent technique

  • god that came out beautiful !!! good eyes & hands sir!

  • Loved the vid!!!

  • Just ordered 3 Tig fingers for my the welding competition I hope I win :D

  • i have my weld test tomorro..and i not that great at the 3g..guess i should have tighten up my gap alittle ...good vid

  • Fantastic video

  • Awesome video! Beautiful welds! Cheers from Canada

  • Imma have to try that back and forth method on the root pass. Hopefully it will help me....

  • Excellent demonstration... thanks... ML.

  • I'm interested in the first passage and penetration with which it is best amperage do this would be done well?

  • ONE QUESTION I HAD TO ASK IM DOING TIG IN SCHOOL AN I WAS TOLD TO USE A 5/32GAP BUT YOUR GAP LOOKS WAY SMALLER THAN THE GAP I USE.IS IT BETTER TO USE A BIG GAP R USE AN GAP LIKE YOUR.

  • @MegaBigwill1 between 3/32th and 1/8th with an 1/8th filler and pin point(for the 2 root passes only) 1/8th tungsten(the type of tungsten i prefer is the 1.5% lanthenated gold) then a .030 land on the tungsten is the best for doing 6in schedule 80 and 8in schedule 120 in my opinion there is many ways to do it though and i use about 110 amps till the 4th pass then i bump it to 135amp and a preheat also helps a lot for a more consistent and flat bead

  • my tig finger got all fucked up from the tungstun poking it on accident lol

  • Love that TIG finger. I bought two, all my buddies at work want one. I find it particularly useful for doing outside corners on thick tubes. It's so nice to be able to drag your finger along for support.

  • its basically resting the cup on the metal but its hard to explain in a few words...just do a quick search on youtube for "walking the cup" and you will see in about 2 minutes...

  • @weldingtipsandtricks have a question ?theres sum guys in my class use a 5/32 gap IS IT BETTER TO USE AN 1/8 R A 5/32

  • @weldingtipsandtricks what was ur amperage set at while u were doing the root pass?

  • Sorry for the dumb question but here it comes... Can someone explain what "walking the cup" is please?

  • @fckurvtc imagine how you would walk a 44 gallon drum along a workshop floor. walking the cup is rolling the cup from side to side on the workpeice while slowly progressing,

  • Another great video! Love the close-ups and the comments on amperage used for various passes.

  • Thanks for your most valued videos!

    All the best for 2011.

  • nice......... love it.

  • Passed both the TIG and MMA 6G tests whilst using the TIG-Finger.

Made it a good deal more pleasant (:

Oh and, happy new year everyone!

  • LOoks great.

  • Happy new year, thanks for all the lessons!

  • Top stuff. Have a safe new year Jodi.

  • Very nice Jody! I wish I can weld like you my friend!

    Happy New Year!

    (non-ETOPS)

  • I've been waiting for these videos!!! I'm in welding school right now and just got my flat and horz plate ticket (with backing strip)! If you could do more of these kinda videos (like open root and stuff with 1/8th" 6011 root pass then 7018 filler and cap) then that would help a TON! Learned a lot from your vids and cant wait for more!

  • Merry Christmas! You should do a video on your history a little bit. Maybe throw in some old school pics of your beginnings. I think it'd make a good video. As always, great job brother. :)

  • @FRUNTCASTER

I agree, that would be very cool.

  • Great vid!
