Not an Avs/Bruins fan and I just got into hockey last year so I've never seen this man play or anything, but I get chills watching him finally win the Cup.
I miss the old hockey and Gary Thorne. This was when hockey was real hockey with so much excitement back in the day. Today hockey is boring with the broadcasters they have today on their new crappy network Versus. Gary Thorne was the best!! We need to bring back Gary Thorne.
@tonebeatz24 I hear that. Him, Doc Emrick, and Steve Levy would bring so much to each game. That was what really made hockey fun to watch on TV. Of course, nothing beats seeing it live, but, y'know...
@Bourosar I do sometimes too. But our current team, is the youngest team in the NHL. They just need time to develop. We've seen what they can do. They have potential. Just give it time.
I'll say it over, Gary Thorne is the man, and this is one of those series that was one of the best 7 game series ever, and one of the best moments in the history of Hockey because of what Sakic did for 77.
This was the first Stanley Cup Playoffs I had ever watched, and this has to be one one of my favourite hockey moments ever, seeing Bourque get the Stanley Cup at the end of his career. I was also really happy that the Aves won because the Devils took out my Leafs in the second round.
As a Carolina Hurricane fan, I must admit that this was a great hockey game and one of the best games I've ever saw as a 12-year-old. Some great times in hockey and the NHL needs to get rid of the "RBK Edge" uniforms and go back to those uniforms that were worn during that time period. Oh, also ESPN/ABC needs to get hockey back, none of this VS. Bullshit.
I love roy, grew up watching him, but i also love Brodeur, hope he still has a few seasons left... and technically Brodeur loves roy as well lol remember he said he grew up watching roy and everything.
If you noticed about this game it's basically the Colorado Rockies vs Colorado Avalanche since the Devils used to be the Rockies. Imagine that the battle of Colorado!
As a Bruins fan, I watched this game with my Grandfather. I was 10 years old when this happened. My Grandfather was crying when Ray got the cup, ever since then I have been hooked on hockey. 3 weeks later he died and since then I have loved the Bruins. This season I cried when the Bruins won.
@TheIceman567 True, but I don't see them leaving anytime soon. I heard that Phoenix may lose their team after this season.. Maybe Quebec is where they'll go.
@xXredIbullXx They gotta go back to these jerseys. The crap they're wearing now is just different enough that it's ruined. And the team itself would probably get a lot better if they stopped making dumb trades like the Varlamov trade.
@xXredIbullXx Going out and trying to get a young goalie is fine, but when you were the second worst team in the NHL, giving up high draft picks for a goalie that's, to me, unproven isn't a good idea.
@GOODPLAYA20 Fair enough, but Giguere is supposed to be like a "mentor" was the idea (not my opinion, stated in many articles from interviews) and overall getting the two goalies was a better idea than having that high draft pick and not for sure having them ready to play at the start of the season.
@koroshjj classiest moment in NHL history. I'm not an Aves fan, but Sakic is one of my favorites of all time, due to that and other examples of his class.
@HSteadyDrummer Because they are an arch rival of my team, but I have a-lot of respect for them and didn't mind seeing a close rival win the cup.
Remember this was 2001, the NHL was running the Isles and the team was God awful. It was not a fun time to be an Isles fan at all, so for me to pull for a main rival to win a cup when my team couldn't even tie their shoe laces is pretty remarkable.
this might be one of the greatest series ever. two of the top goalies of all time going head to head. and joe sakic giving the cup to ray bourque the left....god this was great
joe sakic not only the one of the greatest of all time but the classiest of all time. Colorado this year was the dream team, such good players with so much talent
Ray Bourques winning the cup with the Avs is probably one of the best sports stories to ever be told and it was unbelievable to watch happen. Watching the way Joe handed the cup to Ray cemented Joe as the greatest of all time in my book.
Winning that Cup without Forsberg showed some "True Grit". Avs were soooo badass. The good old days, when hockey raised the hairs of the neck and put fans on the edge of their seat. Man how I miss those times
Joe Sakic - my childhood hero (and my hero still) = by far the classiest professional athlete to EVER play ANY sport. He also had just as much talent and consistency as he had class and sportsmanship, a true legend and role model. I had tears in my eyes when he handed that cup to Bourque. We love and miss you, Super Joe!! Why oh why did you have to mess with that snow-blower?
This is my oppinion... We traded Stewart because we need defense right? We would have never needed to traded for a defender if we kept Scott hannan. Thats when everything went bad. But knowing how bad we got Stewart for Johnson was fine by me cause we needed defense right? So why trade Shattenkirk who by the way has 14 more points than Johnson this year and its only his rookie season... with stewart?? Im hoping Edmonton drafts larsson so we can get RNH and Murphy or Siemens in the 11th spot.
@pitzer04 Look at last years draft. Cam Fowler was projected to go 3rd overall....he went 12th. Murphy is projected to go 9th overall so its always possible for a player to slide 2 spots.
this game brought tears to my eyes, many times, especially the end
i was an avs fan at the time (i was a roy fan, and i retired when my other favorite player forseberg left) i was happy for everyone involved especially borque.
@vanceisvloggin knowing Greg Sherman he is going to screw this opportunity up. Im hearing we might trade Stastny, Liles, and the 11 pick to the leafs for Phaneuf and some other players.
@patrit19 Trading Cohen who was the top scoring D man in college for hunwick is not stupid? I will retract my comment if he drafts landeskog who would replace stewart and a D man in the 11th spot (Murphy or Siemens if possible). But if he trades Stastny or liles then he really is a screw job. Instead of building a team he is disecting it. Hopefully Sakic will have something to do with trades and drafts.
@avschase there were rumors that Cohen had atitude problems with coaches in training camp.... but that trade is the only one that Sherman has "lost" this season. Winnik was a steal, O'Byrne was a good deal, Fleichmann would have been a great deal if he didn't get hurt, but if he re-signs it will still be good. And the Stewart-Johnson trade was a tie short-term, but Sherman got his franchise d-man
@avschase no wed trade the 11th for tuaka rask relief goalie for thomas they wouldnt trade an alternate especially when there looking for another captain
@gokyee maybe not stastny. i have seen interviews a few interviews where they replace his name with o'reilly's. i dont think thats accidential considering all the trade rumors with stastny's name on it. but if stastny doesnt go, its because of his heavy contract that hes not producing on.
Anyone listen to country music during these games? I remember they changed "The Devil Went Down to Georgia" to "The Devil Went Down to Denver" (or something like that lol) it was all with Hockey references.... anyone know where to get this?? I've looked all over, and can't seem to find any references, let alone the song.... any help would be greatly appreciated!!! :-)
Bourqe, after twenty two years deserved to hold the cup first but if it's any other captain, they hold the cup up first. And if your gay and sayin red wings are the best team known to man? And if you like the penguins your hitler? Well hitler disliked Jews. Wings werent the best in 01 and they're outa the playoffs. All they have is datsuk. Dip shit.
Sakic foregoing the tradition as captain of lifting the cup first, instead handing it right to Bourque remains in my mind the classiest act I've ever witnessed in this game. Absolutely nothing tops this.
I love how Joe Sakic tries to immediately take the cup to Ray but Bettman wants to take a picture with him. Gary Bettman ruins everything. This moment always makes me cry
I had a tear well up in my eye when one of the great gentlemen and ambassadors to the game, Joe Sakic, immediately turned to his right to hand the cup off to Ray Bourque. Way to go JOE!!! Still love you to this day for that moment alone.
Every team goes through years were there not that good. Except Detroit. And right now colorado is in one. Though there not going to take as long to get back to the top like Chicago or someone like that. Cause they missed in 07. Made it 08. Missed 09. Made it 2010. So for people who call the avs shitty. Take a look at teams like Florida or Islanders or Columbus.

Dip shit.

Joe Sakic and Ray Bourgue two of the classiest guys to ever play the game!

They missed it this year. But if they get a goalie and some defence. they can get in the playoffs next year or atleast challenge.
