The NEW GI Bill grants a 4 year paid College Education to our returning War Vetereans.

McCain voted against the New GI Bill because the enrollment of new troops have gone down & McCain fears that War Veterans will not re-enlist for a 4th, 5th or 6th Middle East campaign, but would instead choose to go to College paid by the GI Bill.

McCain was right to go against the Webb bill, at least as of now.The Webb bill would provide $1,900 per month,after a soldier serves the first 36 months.McCain's bill would,although less,pay $1,500 per month,but then rise,to provide incentives for the soldiers to stay in the military.According to one estimate,16% of the soldiers will not reenlist after receiving the new Webb bill.This is terrible considering the way our military is currently stretched.McCains bill will be better in the long run.

Two posters above make good points: the proposed GI Bill offers greater incentive to get out of the military than it does to stay. This would lead to increased manpower deficiencies on top of the bleak recruiting/retention situation already, leading to more stop-loss orders and IRR activations, etc.

But it doesn't address the root of the problem (unpopular war), or the gross ABUSE of our veterans under the Stop-Loss policy. Congress needs to pass this GI bill, then reinstate the draft.

Mc'Cain is not in favor of the GI bill because he doesn't really care about the veterans! It was a pleasure though to see Cindy dressed modestly today. Hope she keeps it up! A conservative republican nominee's wife should dress in decent clothes and should not pose for fashion magazines!
