"yeah, but where can you run? since there ain't no world of your own. and you know that no one will ever miss you, when you're finally gone. so you cry like a baby, and you go out and get high. but there ain't no peace on earth man. maybe peace when you die, yeah." This cuts thru my heart; he sang the truth for so many. Rest in peace Gil.
I can't stop commenting. What a beautiful tune from a beautiful man. I backorderd "Pieces of Man" from the record store. It hasn't come yet so I will have to listen on You Tube until the CD comes in. This was my favorite album from Gil. I played it to death. I want to hear it all over again. I love every song on this LP.
GSH's voice & music is pheonomal This is true music appreciation. Mr. Heron never sold out which explains why he never recieved the acclaim or prestiege of a Stevie Wonder even though he was far more gifted. A true music & lyrical prodigy. He didn't dilute the truth. He chose not to sell his soul. We love you Brother Gil.
Rest in peace, Gil Scott Heron. You were an icon who paved the way for many poets, and modern rap(not the shit on the radio). If a poet, soul/jazz artist or anyone who belongs to part of the movement which is hip hop doesn't know of your legacy then they need to learn to be able to truly continue in their craft.
Rest In Peace Gil Scott Heron ~ for more INFO & BIO please see Find A Grave doht cohn with NO spaces ~ IF not on there yet, the details with be forthcoming. Listen to the words of this song & understand that most definitely the words FIT perfectly our present day "A Sign of the Ages"
Call NBC to request a story on his death! he passed away yesterday and still nothing has been said or mentioned about him on MSNBC. East coast callers, call 212-664-4444, or for West coast people call 818-777-1000
Gil Scott-Heron's haunting Cool Jazz ballad from the album 'Pieces Of A Man'. Gil's deep love for the Cool 50's sound of his idols John Coltrane & Miles Davis are so clear this song in instrumental form could be a session from Mile's 'Kind Of Blue' period.
Without sounding self indulgent Gil Scott-Heron's lyrics hold up a mirror to a troubled, inconsolable soul: one crippled with depression, compelled to experience a pain and hopelessness so intense it brings the narrator to his knees. And yet, one who has a hard-earned consciousness of their situation; that understands and is ultimately trapped by the fear of self destruction or painful healing.
on top of the powerful lyrics, gil's voice added an extra touch. it's so strong and gripping. listening to gil sing his ballads, no matter what they were about, made you feel safe. it's rare to find men that stand on pricipal and morals today.
I remember first hearing this album in the living room of my friend Coz's house in Studio City, Ca...we sat and listened, in the dark, with a single candle lit, silently, jaws dropping, hearts beating; our withered nerves temporarily soothed by Gil's amazing lyrics and the incredible band's accompaniment...
@Pinskip2 it still does and always will to someone hopefully haha, i only recently discovered gil 6 months or so ago after shortly after his death after listening to isaac hayes 'hot buttered soul' and al greens 'Let's stay together' albums a lot and wanted something more, at which point my friend played this album whilst we tripped acid... incredible, unforgettable times.
@EDWARDLASUVIDA . Just the right image; So many times we listened to this brother the same way. Thank you for your heart felt post. Thanks to Pinskip2 for uploading this.

Sheer beauty, great quality upload as the original production is very low on the recording levels. This is definately my favourite Scott-Heron tune.
