One of the first things you should do once you get a clear passage to the victim' head is try and get a pacifier into their mouth. That will help reduce the crying.

He is not necessarily crying. I believe he is wearing an Avalung, which is a commonly carried safety device for the backcountry that allows you to breath when youre completely buried. Every time you take a breath from the Avalung it makes a strange whiny noise, JUST LIKE THE SOUND YOU HEAR IN THIS VIDEO. This guy is very lucky to be alive, and lucky he had friends who could carry out such an efficient rescue. I dont believe he was crying, but I wouldnt make fun of him if he was.

The farthest goal you can accomplish is to survive long enough for someone to rescue you. And trust me, you don't have long. As an experienced back country skier, I know this could happen to me. I farther know that it is a mistake to assume you will stay calm when comes for you.

I was skiing alone at Kirkwood march 2006. Lots of fresh, about 25 feet over a couple of weeks. A tree caught my arm and i was flipped backward ending upsidedown next to a tree. It got dark quick as all the snow caved in and I think fell off the tree .I wanted to panic but I could breathe. I musta hung there for 5 mins until I manged to get my arm up and released my bindings one at a time, got my feet below me and out. Do not ski alone. I was lucky and could have died right there had I panicked.

I imagine his legs could have still been attached to his feet, possibly bending and twisting them. He may have been in severe pain, and probably in mild shock after being tossed around by the snow, that's why he made the whining noises. I have no doubt he could breathe by then, the muffled sound of his voice was probably a face mask, scarf, or his jacket if it had a high padded collar.

Just finished Basic Avalanche safety Course this weekend. The rescue was textbook. The skier is lucky to be alive. His buddies did everything perfect. Found his location (possibly by beacon), got his airway clear (most important), stayed calm and dug him out aggressively. Scary, SCARY vid!
