  • Holy smoke...she's got me floored...simply amazing :)

  • Mandocello is the correct name for this instrument...made by Luther Brock from Seattle, WA.

  • Comment removed

  • @vbruno57 Fletcher Brock*. and strangely she is listed on his site as playing an "octave mandolin" although this appears to be exactly his "mandocello".

  • @vbruno57 Actually, it really is an octave mandolin. It looks similar to the mandocello on Fletcher Brock's site because of the sunburst finish (the pics of his octave are in the blonde finish). If you compare the octave to his mandocello, you'll notice that the body of the 'cello is rounder at the neck joint than the one Sarah's playing here. The mandocello is a fifth lower than the octave and a little bigger.

  • @vbruno57

as far as I know it's an octave mandolin, is it not?

  • Laurindo almeida

  • I was channel surfing the other night and flicked on Austin City Limits as she was starting her set. What an enthralling performance and such great chops on multiple instruments!

  • @dldbug me too...just channel surfing and found her. she is pure talent. i'm in love with the bluegrass sound, and just how much talent people have to have to really do it justice is just amazing. she's genius. i'm addicted. :)

  • One of my best friends has an older brother. He's now dating this girl. >_< They are extremely happy. (My friend and her brother are both

  • I saw Sarah on Austin City Limits last night for the 1st time. I really love her style. I love the fact that she's so talented on a few other instruments. Keep up the good work, Sarah! ;-)

  • Awesum, sweet!

  • @ NewMusicFan91 I agree...some of the arrangements on her album, there's just too much going on.

  • Looks and sounds like a mandocello to me.

  • For all who are asking what that instrument is -- it's an octave mandolin, tuned GDAE like a normal mandolin, just an octave lower. Hers was made by an awesome luthier named Fletcher Brock. I'm hoping to get mine next spring or summer. Woo!

  • @gwoman6071 any idea if thats a pick-up she found or somthing that he puts on there that he regularly uses? (been looking for an archtop pickup i like for quite some time and shounds pretty good, looks like a banjo pickup or bazouki pick up of some kind)

  • @noahpalmertye No idea. I've never used a pickup before (I'm not good enough to play in public yet, so no need!), so I didn't ask Fletcher about it when I ordered mine.

  • Superb!

  • She's definitely something special. Wish her even greater success - but just not too much please.

  • She seems like she has a good voice, and she's a great guitarist, but all her songs (that I have heard) have the music overpowering the voice, so that the lyrics are unclear.

  • Wow! amazing guitar playing! great voice too. Wish I could see you live so I could hear you more clearly.

  • i've got nothing but respect for anyone who can sing and play like that.

i hope our shitty mass produced fake pop music culture gives her a chance.

we need to start celebrating and rewarding the real artists out there.

  • @willyicious Actually she was already nominated for a Grammy for the instrumental "Mansinneedoff" from her first album!

Artists like this ARE rewarded, just not in mass media. Look at Krauss. Mosyt people never heard of her but her rewards are there alright. Most Grammy winning female in history and 2nd most Grammy winning all around. I'd put money on this girl having an equally rewarding career if the mass media will NOT get their hands on her that is.

  • @reddragonready If she has big commercial success, then they will. As long as she is well looked after and has a mature head on her shoulders, she will be okay.

  • @candelise Not necessarily. It depends indeed how mature her head is. Again..look at Krauss. When big commercial success hit she didn't let it get to her head and certainly not anywhere near her personal life.

I think SJ will be okay though. From what I have seen in interviews she does have a good and mature head on her shoulders.

I have high hopes for her and think any of us who have discovered her now are lucky to witness the start of a , I believe, very interesting career. :)

  • @reddragonready How mature her head is? Didn't I already make that point?

  • @candelise Yes you did. Hence that "indeed". ;)

  • @reddragonready The'not necessarily' was not needed then, with respect .

  • @candelise Dude, I see you like arguing as much as me but since you also like Juliane Moore...;D

The "not necessarily" was needed imo because my original remark regarding mass media didn't go so much to how SJ would react herself but the effect on audiences etc.

Since these things ARE interwoven pretty quickly I was simply agreeing with your statement even if it was taking my point in a slightly different direction than intended. But in spite of that I agreed with your statement hence "indeed"

  • @reddragonready Not my intention to be pedantic .Simple clarity, that's all.

  • @candelise LOL and here I was thinking I was pretty clear. ;)

  • @reddragonready There you go.

  • @candelise You might want to take into consideration not everybody posting on Youtube has English as their mother tongue or expresses themselves in the same way you would and amount of characters per comment being limited. To go into the absolutely correct use of language when the sentiments are quite clear is a tad pushing for argument don't you think?

  • And before you go into that too..yes, I realize now that it should have been "as much as I do" instead of "as much as me". ;D

  • wow

    amazing

    fans from Philippines..

  • Man is this girl a musical genius or what? Those chords, that slick picking... this is what true talent sounds like. What amazing songwriting chops she has, on top of the playing skills. I can't wait to see her perform live!

  • or if it isn't a guitar, whatever it is...

    its greatness

  • Its a Tenor mandolin!

  • i'm amazed every time i watch this

i think i might like it live better than on the cd, just to see her fingers move up and down that guitar

  • i just got her cd..it's awesome!!! you all should get it if you enjoyed this song!!!

  • I know I might be imagining this but doesn't this reminds anyone of opeth?

  • she's awesome for her age..I'll be watching for her during her college experience and after...thanks NPR for introducing me...I found The Black Keys the same way.....can't get enough of The Black Keys - Just Got to Be. We used to call it blue eyed soul...

  • I was there!

  • I've been blasting this song while driving. I will never get tired of these chords.

  • she reminds me of nickel creek and tim o'brien.

  • She's played with Nickel Creek & Tim O'Brien

  • Gillian Welch AND David Rawlings watch out!! Again, nicely done Sarah!

  • Nice. Don't see 8 string guitars very often...Big Joe Williams had a 9 string though. Pretty Cool.

  • It's not a guitar at all, but a Bouzouki. Very similar but slightly larger than an octave mandolin.

  • Hm. I suppose it could be. Most bouzouki's I've seen look like an A style mando with a long neck. However, it could also be a mandola, octave mandola, tenor mandola, cittern, blarge, or with a large body like that, a mandocello.

  • An article about her on the bluegrass blog says it's a mandocello. So I guess that clears that up.

  • Wow, she's nailed me to the floor. I love this gal! This whole album is a marvel.
