Hey lads I have a 4-string tenor banjo that belonged to my dad who passed away in October. I'm 16 and having awful trouble trying to tune the thing never mind play it.. What way does he have it tuned to play this song? I've heard of CGDA and all that stuff but I'm confused. Any help?

@IrishDeadmau5 this is tuned GDAE... there's some tabs out there for mandolin in the same tuning but it's an octave higher.

@TaffyRaphie Mine is tuned in mandolin standard tuning, because its a 4 string. so GDAE :)

Could you tell me if i can play flogging molly, dropkick murphys, pogues and all that sort of music on a 5 string banjo? would be cool cause the only banjos available here are 5 strings thanks!

@4evergreendayfan yeah you definatly can, you just dont tune the top string (with the tuning peg in the middle of the banjo) differently at all, tune the last 4 strings to GDAE and you should be golden. most of the songs by the pogues are played on a 5 string banjo anyways :) dropkick and flogging molly use boh 5 string and 4 string. its all about the type of music you are wanting to play
