Impossible ! It couldn't !...or at least they used previous models of Simmons drums (SDS-V or others) ...the model shown here had a more advanced technology than the previous models, and was issued only in 1987...while the Miami Vice theme dates back to the cretaion of the series (1984,I think...) I however agree with you that they most probably used Simmons drums, the sound is typical(perhaps the SDS-7 ...)

since all here mention MV the SDX is the white, 87 Testarossa of simmons drumsets.

Tom sounds from Miami probably come from the Fairlight CMI.
They are in the CMI sound library.
& Jan Hammer used the FAIRLIGHT extensively...
