can i ask a queastion, why did you only put frets 8 and 20? you can play this shape in any key, the shape you have there is in the key of C, but move it down 2 frets and its in the key of D, not trying to sound like dick or a know it all, just making a statement
@bubywashere The backing track is in the key of C. Of course you can play any scale in any key, and there are other positions of C Lydian, but didn't want to confuse people who want to play over this track.
@untilseventytimes07 C Lydian would be in the key of G major if I'm not mistaken. I don't mean any offense, just trying to prevent confusion. G A B C D E F# G.
Again I think it depends on how you use it. Whether something sounds boring or not isn't to do with the scale you use. I don't know why but I've always loved using Lydian over drawn out powerchords and more lumbering riffs. I think in the quicker parts though I agree with you, it's not AS effective, and Locrian is a good alternative. I appreciate your input man it's all good and food for thought.
@Sunderlanding@Sunderlanding The progression is based around the tritone of Lydian. Minor scales do work of course, but I thought the track brought out Lydian's major 3rd and #4 qualities. To say it doesn't sound major at all is a bit of a stretch since the major 3rd sounds natural when used in Lydian or Phrygian dominant over the track.
@fretjamdotcom The major third doesn't fit very well. You can kind of use it, but it takes away some edge to it. The minor third definately sounds more metal.
@Sunderlanding It depends how you use it. Many metal solos use Lydian and Phrygian Dominant. It's using the major 3rd in phrases that involve the #4 b2 and b6 that gives it more of an edge. I'm not saying Lydian is the only scale to use over this track, it's just an opportunity to explore Lydian's sound. I'll upload my interpretation to show you what I mean. Would like to hear any minor scale interpretations as well!
@fretjamdotcom Thank you for explaining basic theory to me. Yes I know that, but they use Lydian in a major setting over major chords for a melodic passage. This heavy riffage is better suited to minor scales. Sure, like I said before, you can use Lydian, but it doesn't sound very metal due to what the rhythm guitar is playing.
@Sunderlanding Well each to their own, but I'm drawn to Lydian with this track, regardless of its perceived style or whether it sounds metal enough. I didn't want to be that dogmatic about it. I like how the #4 works over the track with the major 3rd, and Lydian is one scale that uses these tones. If you can make it work, great, if not, don't use it.
@fretjamdotcom Sure the #4 and the 3 are nice tones. You'd be better off using the #4 as a b5, like a Locrian sound or a blues scale, and the Major third would be better suited for a fifth mode harmonic minor type of sound. Using Lydian is wack, and I imagine if you played this groove with Lydian at a show most people would think it sounded off, or just boring. Lydian doesn't bring out the dark qualities of this riff at all, and as a result it sounds lifeless.
@Sunderlanding It's not difficult theory but it's hardly basic theory, i get the impression you know "internet theory"....don't be such a butthurt because somebody is explaining something to you. If you didn't need to be educated you wouldn't be on here arguing over what is "better suited" lol if it was about whats better suited everything would be in E and the only scales in existence would be pentatonics...god forbid!
@TheLydianRocks Listen asshole. All I'm saying is that a backing track is supposed to be educational, and as such this is a bad representation of a Lydian sound because it doesn't sound Lydian. A begginer would get the wrong impression of what Lydian sounds like. I think you'd be better off playing a groove that stuck to notes only in the Lydian mode so that people who don't know theory very well can hear what it sounds like.
@Sunderlanding It does only contain intervals/notes related to Lydian, namely the major 3rd and tritone. In hindsight, fewer chord changes might have helped keep the interpretation more open.
@chikita1234 Hmmm, those are pretty strong words for a follower of Jesus. What makes yo think that Jesus wasn't Gay? Or Mary a lesbian? I'm pretty sure that the "bible" points to this lifestyle.
what key is this backing track in?? i said G major but it just doesnt fit with the notes im hearing so what is it??? the intro sounds to be Gb E Db C but i could be wrong
@ericsbuds key of C major. The track was written specifically for the Lydian mode but as others have commented phrygian dominant also works over the intro.
@pyrodude8 Yeh phrygian does work well. There are parts in this track, however, where the sharp 4th (used in Lydian) interacts more naturally with the backing riff. Obviously it's a personal preference so I don't want to seem dogmatic about it.
@malygos20 I've tried playing Dorian over this track and I don't feel it to be honest. If you can make Dorian work, great. No audio problems from where I'm sitting. Are you getting audio on other videos?
@fretjamdotcom im a complete idiot.... the volume was turned down. :) and another thing im a little new to the guitar scales and i searched dorian and found out i was thinking of the lydian so i was wrong on both ends. sorry bout that. lol
:( i cant play solos fast

so what were the chords used in the backing track
nitinlkoin1984 7 months ago
@nitinlkoin1984 C5 tonic, D5, E5, F#5, G5, A5, B5 - basically power chords built on the intervals of Lydian.

i find it great and fun to play along. congrats to the author!

with a chord over that all it would be easier to hear that this is c-lydian : )

What frets are used for the main notes? I might try to jam along with this later this week.

This doesn't sound major at all. I don't know why you'd suggest Lydian as this has a minor sound to it.
