Sully had it VERY EASY, he had no turbulance, no rain, and visibilty (landscape and 2 eyes). Want so se Real Hero Pilot, type on the words "taca airlines 110" and watch.
This Captain landed in wet grass (came out of the rainclouds after gliding IFR. Came out of the rain cloudsat about 900 feet agl, did a perfect left gliding turn, aligned, dropped gear and full flaps, gliding turn it perfectly, avoided ditching in the Lake.. NOW who is better?

There should be a statue of this man in every United States airport. And please Mr. Announcer, that was not by any means a "crash" landing, but a perfectly executed water landing in a landplane by a very skilled pilot.
What is stunning is how cool everybody has been trained to remain. I would have gottten an epilepsy attack of panick that is really one shit of a hell of self control!

If the first officer restarted the engines and the Captain was able to maintain control, The captain would still get all credit,
@umpalumpa101909 Actually, Captain Sully has been quite vocal and gracious in his praise of the team. In his book , "Highest Duty", he speaks most eloquently of Capt. Jeff Skyles, as well as recognizing the contributions of C1549's Flight Attendants, the ferry boat crews, & emergency personnel.
Normally, the 1st officer would take control of the plane while the Captain considered alternatives & weighed options; but since Capt. Jeff had so few hours in the Airbus A320, that was not an option.
@umpalumpa101909 The side stick on an Airbus is handled by one person. The Captain ordered the 1st officer off of his controls and proclaimed, "my aircraft."
@rdrd4544 Read the FDR transcript... he never pushed up the throttles and #1 responded to a throttle reduction. Hence "Mr. I forgot to push up the throttle".
Speaking as a Left of Center / Liberal Democrat, I'm reminded of the words of America's Great Communicator, The Late (Republican) President Ronald Reagan.
"We (The People of The United States) don't have to turn to our history books for heroes. They're all around us."
As I look back upon "The Miracle On The Hudson", and the works of Capt. Skyles, the flight attendants Doreen, Donna, & Sheila, 1st Responders, & ferry boat crews, those word not only seem profound, they also ring prophetic.
we should not be commenting on his skill or quick thinking but rather his professionalism and his situation management skills. Unlike most people who would freak out, he remained calm, the only reason why 155 people lived. If you were a pilot and your engines died, would you sit back in your seat and fly it or will you say screw this, i'm dying anyways?

@DJEMMEY25 People who seek to marginalize the accomplishments of others tend to be pathetic, insecure soles who feel threatened by the accomplishments of others.
As for "luck"?? "Luck" is a phenomenon which occurs when the thresholds of preparation converge with the thresholds of opportunity and circumstance.
Capt. Sully has stated unequivocally that this was not a feat that he accomplished alone. The flight crew, ferry boat crews, and first responders contributed their best efforts as well.
@DJEMMEY25 Such vitriolic rants from such a simple mind. Looks like the truth hit a little too close for you. All you have accomplished was to validate my observations of you, DJEMMY25!!
@DJEMMEY25 Sooooo..... looks like the truth hit a little too close to home for you, DJEMMY25!! Such a sad, pathetic soul; like the sole of a shoe, you are reduced to having to look upward just to see the bottom.
Perhaps if you learn to deal with your anger issues, you might be able to direct your energy to accomplishing something more that demonstrating your foolishness.
Honestly don't know why this pilot is considered, a "hero."
Yess, he made a good emergency landing, But:
Every official Pilot should know how to ditch in the water, it's a required learning processing skill, that every pilot needs to know, in case of an emergency.
You can't train for ditching in the water properly, it's not just a skill but a matter of being accurate, and yes he's a hero because the chances of saving 155 people by landing in the water perfectly is quite small.
@FlightSimulation2010 To be honest, hes right. he actually said himself that hes not a hero. Im not saying that we should overlook the fact that he saved 155 lives, but he did so with preparedness, as well as careful thinking and deleberation.
@tj1990 Don't worry. Just to reassure you the stats are something like there'd be about a 0.9% chance that you'd be on a crash plane if you went on 500,000 flights, the chance spreading throughout all the flights, basically meaning a 0.0000018% chance of your flight having an emergency.
@VirtualAviators tell that to all the people who died in plane crashes....but anyway...thanks for trying to ease the worry. i flew on the 31st of august and obviously im fine because im writing you this message...also....i wonder about the other things that have happened in my life, and what were the odds of those things happening.....hm..something to ponder...
ASK 21 is nice, I've got my lessons on that plane. I also flew the Puchasz.. you should try that once XD Sux kinda hard... Junior is nice, 1 person plane, very easy to fly and it isn't that expensive...
Buy why it's expensive? You can sign in for a club right? Then you don't have to pay yourself bankrupt ;)
@jelmerholland in the club i'm in they don't have the ask 21 mig, and i'm tired of having to pay for towing XD, so i was looking for buy one but a brand new is more than 50 thousand euros..
Lol, why you'd like to have a new one? 2nd hand planes are even so good.. (up to a certain level off course)
You should look for a 2nd hand plane, I guess you could find smth great.. and if you don't have that much money. Buy a K2 .. lol.. you could even get those planes for free (my instructor told me that ;) )
After reading "Highest Duty", I now understand something about this saga a little bit better.
We live in a "disposable" society. Everything from shaving razors to ink cartridges, to children, to elderly people, to dedicated employees....... And at a time when people have sadly discovered how easily their lives can be dispatched into the "disposable" realm by layoffs, restructurings, or business failures, we have one fine crew who considered no one in their charge to be "disposable".
@Outlaw1257 Very well put!!! I'm going to quote you . . . . . .
"We live in a 'disposable' society. Everything from shaving razors to ink cartridges, to children, to elderly people, to dedicated employees....... And at a time when people have sadly discovered how easily their lives can be dispatched into the'"disposable' realm by layoffs, restructurings, or business failures, we have one fine crew who considered no one in their charge to be "disposable."
I wanted to be an airline pilot when I was a child, but unfortunately my poor vision ruled out that possibility.
After seeing the movie "Airplane", I decided that I wanted to be a "Jive Translator". Unfortunately, with cutbacks in airline personnel, that position has been eliminated. ;o(
you need to do some research buddy. fly-by-wire simply means that the controls of the plane are not physically connected to the control surfaces. Fly-by-wire aircraft use a system of computers that monitor inputs to the flight controls and signal the hydraulics to actuate the ailerons and elevons as required. No force is required on the pilots part.
I have a feeling you are either an incompetent Cessna pilot or a wan-a-bee! Which is it? In the future, please do not comment unless you do your homework!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Thank God that I'm not famous nor do I want to. The media loves to milk stories about anything. With over 300 million people in America, you folks can't find any new stories? What's next? "Oh look, he can wipe his ass with his left hand!"

@gustavo87467357
I think you mean the 'Duo Discus' ? Or do you want to sit on the wing?
jelmerholland 1 year ago
@jelmerholland the duo the duo... anyways it's understandable.. but will be nice to sit on the wing..lol
gustavo87467357 1 year ago
@gustavo87467357
Haha, yes, off course it's understandable, otherwise I wouldn't have said it (A)...
You flew (or maybe flying) the Duo? Nice plane right? (L)
jelmerholland 1 year ago
@jelmerholland no i didn't but i would like to, i only flew with blanik.. but i would like to fly with the ask 21 mi, but it's expensive..
gustavo87467357 1 year ago
@gustavo87467357
Then you don't have to pay yourself bankrupt ;)
jelmerholland 1 year ago
@jelmerholland in the club i'm in they don't have the ask 21 mig, and i'm tired of having to pay for towing XD, so i was looking for buy one but a brand new is more than 50 thousand euros..
gustavo87467357 1 year ago
@gustavo87467357
Lol, why you'd like to have a new one? 2nd hand planes are even so good.. (up to a certain level off course)
You should look for a 2nd hand plane, I guess you could find smth great.. and if you don't have that much money. Buy a K2 .. lol.. you could even get those planes for free (my instructor told me that ;) )
jelmerholland 1 year ago
@jelmerholland i'll look for that, thanks :D

I wanted to be an airline pilot when I was a child, but unfortunately my poor vision ruled out that possibility.
After seeing the movie "Airplane", I decided that I wanted to be a "Jive Translator". Unfortunately, with cutbacks in airline personnel, that position has been eliminated. ;o(

The bus flies itself!
davidsholem 2 years ago
actually the plane doesnt fly itself it has the Fly-By-Wire which enables the plane to save itself in an emergency
and every plane in the world has the ability to keep in flight by itslef called autopilot
joshuan542 2 years ago
you need to do some research buddy. fly-by-wire simply means that the controls of the plane are not physically connected to the control surfaces. Fly-by-wire aircraft use a system of computers that monitor inputs to the flight controls and signal the hydraulics to actuate the ailerons and elevons as required. No force is required on the pilots part.

My friend, I fly the "bus," and it flys itself!

So, davidsholem, did the Airbus "fly itself" into the Hudson??
Outlaw1257 2 years ago
I have a feeling you are either an incompetent Cessna pilot or a wan-a-bee! Which is it? In the future, please do not comment unless you do your homework!
davidsholem 2 years ago
33 years experience and over 14,000 hours of flight time?? An "incompetent Cessna pilot", or a "wan-a-bee", davidsholem??
Yeah, right!!

BTW, nice vid of your landing in a Mooney MJ20!! Looks like you even had to compliment yourself in your comments!!

BudLight Salutes YOU, Mr. Airbus Cockpit Button Pushing Systems Monitor Man!!
You keep the skies safe!! Because no matter how many hours you've logged shooting your ILS approaches in a Mooney MJ20, your Airbus "flies itself"!!

Thank God that I'm not famous nor do I want to. The media loves to milk stories about anything. With over 300 million people in America, you folks can't find any new stories? What's next? "Oh look, he can wipe his ass with his left hand!"
