Horace Parlan was crippled from polio at a young age. It's really an inspiration that he can even hit those b9 neutrals. As a piano player, I return to these videos in large part to witness the genius progression of Parlan's solo. I don't fault you for not knowing about his condition, just for not researching his biography. If you're going to surreptitiously comment about an obvious physical abnormality, you should at least supplement it with some sort of humanistic depth.
Again you? You are everywhere blablaing Archie Shepp, aren´t you? You are just a desperate troll, inflating your miniscule ego by sucking in hot air and releasing bad vibrations. Attempted vilification of a giant won´t turn you into an artist. Please dissolve again into the vacuity you belong.
Archie Shepp is a great saxophonist. His solo work on Abbey Lincolns 'Painted Lady' album proves it to me. On this tune he sounds like he's just playin' aroun' with the tune (& with us) - lettin' the tune (& us) know he can pretty well do anything he damn well pleases with it - & with us!
how can you praise Trane for leading a movement that "broke with standard time signatures and harmonics" then turn around and dog Shepp by saying "He has no chops nor grasp of harmony and he does not swing" You sir, are an asshole (also Ornette was doing it before Coltrane).

PART 2 :
Coltrane with Archie ad Pharoah did some awesome performances. Archie had a raw sound that was unique and expessive. But Archie has not grown one inch as a performer or master of the saxophone. His sound now is just plain unpleasant. He has no chops nor grasp of harmony and he does not swing. He sings third rate blues to bullshit his way through a performance. He is clearly riding on the cred he developed with Trane 40 years ago... Keni
For a guy who's supposedly been around a long time you sure like to talk shit about somebody. Are you jealous or something? You're acting like you're 12, and you're old enough to be my grandfather. I guess some people never grow up.
@esolarceoaol First of all, Shepp is a spiritual musician. He plays the notes he wants to play, and he plays with the sound he wants to play. It may be unpleasant to you, but i am past the notion that any sound can be bad. Its his sound, and he doesnt have to play more challenging lines just so you can say he sounds better. You know, Louis Armstrong also had his own sound. He didnt have to change, because he already discovered his voice, and so did Archie
As a jazz saxophone player I consider Archie Shepp to be the King of the Bullshitters. In the 60s he and I played on the same concerts. My group, as his was at the time, was also experimenting with approaches to Jazz that broke with standard time signatures and harmonics. John Coltrane led this movement and Archie, along with Pharoah Sanders, played with Colrane. I knew 'Trane... PART 1 of 2 -- Keni Washington
He came to my small hometown on the jazzfestival. His music is timeless since at the age of 71 he still got a standing ovation at the end of his performance. He just stepped into his time machine and fell on stage in front of his sax...he is an amazing musician.
I've got this record from archie, He's got really nice grove in his sax playing, and he;s playing what he likes, so i think you can do nothing but respect him for it, like or dislike chose your way

Chewing on the mouthpiece.. :) Actually, I think he's adjusting for each note because his technique is so bad. This is a textbook example of how NOT to play the saxophone.
bad technique? who cares? you dont know what jazz is, man. it goes way beyond technique. or would you say that ornette coleman is a textbook example of how not to play the saxophone.
Archie split his lip open in the early 80's and had to have surgery on his mouth. He's had some embouchure problems since but has continued to deliver inspired performances...
Archie Shepp is the closest musician to John Coltrane, that I can think of. He has an element of the old, new, and a spiritual background. This is what jazz music is all about.
I respectfully disagree. The reason I say Archie Shepp is more like John Coltrane, look at his body of work. He has been more experimental and explored musical boundaries. I love Joe Henderson, Wayne Shorter at times has been too commercial for my taste. Archie's Denon and Steeple Chase recordings are classics. I actually would place Pharoah Sanders ahead of Joe or Wayne. Anyway there is nothing wrong in expressing a difference of opinion. Jazz lives.
@Thekingofpop1958 oh ok i wasn't critiquing his technique just check the snuff box video called guitar lesson
