@doctorrhys Have you been to our website to see the available GPU's and CPU's? There is nothing stronger than what the Sager NP8170 offers, unless it is DUAL GPU's, which Sager also offers in their Sager NP8180 and Sager NP728x laptops.
@Baloney1011 All high end gaming laptops get hot. It is impossible for these components not to get hot, so the trick is how well does the cooling system evacuate the heat. The Sager NP8170 does evacuate the heat better than most high end laptops on the market today...they are well known for how well they handle the heat.
@PowerNotebooks Okay, so... for instance, if I was playing an intensive game - say Crysis 2 or something - how hot would it get? Would it be okay to keep your hands on it, or a little uncomfortable, or really hot, or BURNING? I know my old HP HDX got pretty hot - even under normal operation - and that was a miserable little GT 130M!!
@Baloney1011 Most people say they can game for hours without any discomfort from heat. You will see an amazing difference between the Sager NP8170 and your old HP HDX.
@PowerNotebooks Actually, I was hypnotized by the Apple logo and for whatever reason I am now buying a MacBook Pro. PLEASE DON'T LAUGH AT ME!!! I'm a massive fool, I know, no need to remind me. :( But, would the MacBook Pro get hot? Do you know? The 6770M and Core i7 2820QM? I mean, the resolution is only 1680x1050 and I only play games like Microsoft flight Simulator and Dirt2... so, it shouldn't get THAT hot, right?
How hard is it to access both hard disk slots? Because I plan on putting my old laptop's drive in as well and so would I need to remove the keyboard or anything, or just the bottom cover? Thanks.
@pwn0grapher The hard drives are easy to get at by removing the bottom cover, and opening a Sager laptop does not void your warranty. Your warranty won't cover it if you break something while in there, but even that won't void your warranty.
Yes, the Sager NP8170 supports 2 SATA III slots for both hard drives.

i was thinking of purchasing this laptop, but out of curiosity, is the battery charge 1-3 hours of gaming, or average tasks (browsing the internet, playing music, watching videos, Word, Photoshop, etc.)?
I am this one i7 2.4ghz 16 gm ram 1.25 Tb, but I was wondering about the the graphic card, I orderned the HD 6990 2Gb. Is it a good graphic card for playing ultra settings battlefield. 3 and other future games???
someone plz help so i wnna play some game on my laptop like fallout new vegas or like battle feild bad company 1 nothing new but i dont no about computers lol so can i play it on my laptop smoothly with okey grahpics
@Stevethesearcher For audio recording I would not recommend a high end gaming laptop because the cooling requirements will make it louder than you would want. Rather, select a laptop with an i5 processor and an integrated video card.
@PowerNotebooks Thanks for your reply. I appreciate your response. Yes loudness is a big issue when recording especially if you have have a Mic set up in the same room as your Laptop. However brute power is also a consideration as most music applications now require considerable power. I need a firewire port as my audio interface is firewire and I need a hard drive that runs at 7200 RPM. Those specs are a must. Ideally four gigs of Ram or more. How does I5 compare to a 2.4 duo core circa 2008?
@mikey420100 Depends on how demanding the games you'd want to play on a laptop are. There are some budget gaming laptops (AKA laptops with some sort of dedicated graphics card) out there for under $1,000 -- but check the user reviews to see if other people are successfully playing games similar to your favorites on them. (I don't expect to play anything newer than DOSBox games (& watch YouTube, of course!) on the laptop I'm shopping for, so anything with reasonable specs will do for me.)
I was amazed with the NP8150 being considerably easy to access the specs from the bottom with only a few plates removed! Pls tell me this is as easily accessable as the NP8150! It would be so awesome to upgrade a 17 inch laptop with ease! And my other question, will this laptop stay cool (quiet or low noise) when i play? If yes, then i salute Sager! Missing backlit is a small problem for me compared to upgrading.
@Rockboy58 I can barely hear my fan during gaming and temps are all perfectly within the safe ranges. Everyone should know that Sager showed a backlit keyboard prototype that they plan to introduce so it looks like everyone will be pleased soon enough.
@voianhemsed Are you serious? A backlit keyboard in an easily upgradeable laptop for a gamer such as myself would be a dream machine! And by upgradeable i mean easy to access the specs like the CPU, GFX card, RAM, hard drives and all that good stuff. But my fear is that if i try to change the CPU or GFX card, what are the chances of the laptop to stop working? Even if the new gadget is compatible? And btw, do u know if Intel will make more i7's or similar GFX cards in the future?
@Rockboy58 Changing the CPU and GPU is quite straightforward and low risk if you take your time, use an anti static wrist strap and electrically non conductive thermal paste. I have changed the GPU and CPU in previous models and they work fine. Intel will make more i7's and it is in constant motion. Ivybridge is the next iteration and it will just keep on improving. Nvidia and AMD will also continue to release new GPU's, the HD6990M and 580M has just been released for example.
@Rockboy58 The thermal paste is used in between the surface of the CPU / GPU DIE and the heatsink to aid in heat dissipation by filling in the microscopic gaps.
@Rockboy58 No, none of the Sager laptops have backlit keyboards. However if you look at our other videos, or visit PowerNotebooks/com, you will see that the ASUS G series and the MSI GT series laptops do have backlit keyboards.
@J3yblivion Yes, it has a webcam. All Sager, MSI, ASUS and PowerPro laptops have webcams. You need to visit our website to read the detailed specifications pages.
@PowerNotebooks don't take this the wrong way, but is your website legit? i am actually interested in upgrading my notebook in the near future to something similar to the model in the video
@J3yblivion Legit...I think so. We are in our 13th year of business and if you visit our website you will see we have been a Better Business Bureau Accredited Member since 2002 and have an A+ rating. You can also click our Customer Satisfaction rating at ResellerRatings/com.
@lorenavedon I am sorry but we don't have a decibel level meter. However there are many reviews available (you can Google for them) for the Sager NP8170 that discuss noise levels both at idle and under load.
You don't really need to upgrade anything, unless you need a Windows 7 operating system. The nVIDIA GeForce GTX 560M 192bit w/1.5GB GDDR5 will give you all the video card that you need, as will the stock configuration.
Just buy it the way it comes, get the OS if you need one, and...GAME ON!
@XLilShaneX We don't force our Sager customers to buy a Windows 7 operating system because too many of them use Linux, or have their own license.
For those that do want Windows 7, we offer Premium, Professional and Ultimate as upgrade options. If you need Windows 7 just select the version you want, and you will get a clean install with no bloatware or scamware.
@XLilShaneX No, it does not come with Linux. It is up to the user to install Linux if that is what they want. Linux or Windows 7 is a personal choice, some people say Linux is better, others say Windows 7 is better.
@PowerNotebooks oh i think i understand so if i dont select an os can i still use it like a normal computer or is that for people that have windows 7 discs and stuff already
I am finalizing between this NP8170 and G73SW. Both cost me round 1300$ but the NP now comes with 560M nvidia. I know this will increase the battery life(optimus), how much i m not sure. Will this be a giant gain in battery lifeand performance ?
Also please tell me if I can replace the Processor and graphics card in G73SW to 485M or 6970M at a later stage ? Low on budget, cant afford these needed upgrades now :D
You will not find Optimus Technology with high end video cards...neither of these models will support it.
You can upgrade the Sager NP8170 to the nVIDIA GeForce GTX 485M w/2.0GB GDDR5 but not the ASUS G73SW-A1. The AMD 6970 is no longer available from Sager.
@PowerNotebooks So, I can upgrade the 8170 which i buy with 460 to 485 later ? This has added more to my confusion on deciding between these two machines.
I am not a heavy gamer, do engage in a moderate gaming over weekends. But I don't want a machine that burns hot. I learn from you that G73 cools better but no upgrades...too bad.
Please help me decide between the two, I need to place it by this week.
The Sager NP8170 only comes with the nVIDIA GeForce GTX 560M 192bit w/1.5GB GDDR5 or nVIDIA GeForce GTX 485M w/2.0GB GDDR5. The nVIDIA GeForce GTX 460M w/1.5GB GDDR5 would be a downgrade, not an upgrade.
Call me at 1-877-711-1777 between 9:00 AM and 6:00 PM Pacific Time Monday through Friday to discuss the alternatives.

Hello Donald. I need to get in touch with you about this lappy (NP8170). Do you prefer me to drop you the message to your YouTube's account, or to your sales email account at powernotebooks?
quick question, does the hdmi port allow you to plug in eg. your ps3 or xbox etc. and play on the laptop screen or does it only allow you to use it as an external output, ie. to send video/audio signal to a projector or monitor? thnx.
I'm thinking of buying this model, but with a 120gb SSD and a 500gb drive for other media and files. How do you think the performance of games and general programs would run off an SSD with this model?
I would strongly recommend getting a Solid State Drive in your primary bay and keeping the 500GB 7,200 RPM as your secondary for storage. Then put your OS and all your applications and games on the SSD, and all your data on the 500GB 7,200 RPM.
@PowerNotebooks Yup, that's exactly what I'll use the two drives for. One last question! Do you find a major difference between the GTX 470 and 485? I may compromise and get the AMD Radeon 6970M.
The nVIDIA GeForce GTX 485M w/2.0GB GDDR5 is WAY faster than the nVIDIA GeForce GTX 470M w/1.5GB GDDR5.
The sweet spot is the AMD 6970. Better than the nVIDIA GeForce GTX 460M w/1.5GB GDDR5 and nVIDIA GeForce GTX 470M w/1.5GB GDDR5, but less expensive than the nVIDIA GeForce GTX 485M w/2.0GB GDDR5.
For perspective, your processor, memory and graphics card will score in the low 7's in the WEI (Windows Experience Index) and your 500GB 7,200 RPM will score 5.9. Put the SSD in and it will score 7.7, moving your hard drive from the slowest component, to the fastest. Once you use an SSD you will never go back!
@djpzayne thanks alot but how much better im on the edge of buying either one but sager better graphic proccesor and asus better screen both are important
Hmmm, we have been selling Sager laptops for 12 years and have paid careful attention to how the owner pronounces his company's name. It is Say-Jur, like sagebrush.
We can ship it to Europe, but there is no such thing as a Europe keyboard. What language keyboard do you want. We can special order it and install it before we ship.
@mikeleoMagna "compare this laptop with asus n73,which one has more mobility? considering weight and size."
The ASUS N73SV-A1 weighs 7.5 pounds and the Sager NP8170 weighs 8.6 pounds. They are otherwise about the same size. Details Specs for each model are on our website.
I am sorry but we do not sit here and run every game on every laptop. If you want to know the frame rates I would recommend that you do some research on your own. The information is all over the internet.
The ASUS G73SW-A1 will be cooler and quieter than the Sager NP8170. The ASUS G73SW-A1 also has a better warranty package, a backlit keyboard and comes standard with a Republic of Gamer's Mouse and Backpack.
@PowerNotebooks I have not seen the Asus G73SW with a GTX 485M anywhere and if that is the case then no heat comparisons can be made with the Sager since the GTX 485M is in a completely different league being almost twice as fast than the 460M.
Just preordered this laptop but opted for the entry level i7 and gtx 485m, i also opted out of a bluray drive since i really have no use for it. I hope i can game on it comfortably!
The price depends on how you configure it. It starts at $1,347.33, but go to our website and configure it the way you want it to find the final price including shipping.
There are only a few that have shipped before the Sandy Bridge recall, and the Sager NP8170 won't start shipping again with the new, "fixed", chipset until mid-March. This is why you won't see any reviews of them yet.
please help..... i thought asus was a good brand just as i think the sager is, but after doing some research i found asus actually really sucked and the number of good reviews and bad reviews were 50/50.
I havent been able to find reviews about this laptop so i dont know if i should buy it or not
@xxmanuelvaldesxx I have had two Sager laptops so far and both have been the best laptops I have ever owned. Build quality was top, cooling was excellent and performance was also excellent. After the Sandybridge recall has been dealt with, I would definitely recommend buying one of these. I have ordered one myself.

You would be responsible for any Customs Duties and Taxes charged by your government. We do not keep track of the Customs Duties and Taxes of the many countries to which we ship.

@Br4nd0nH776 That would be about 2 hours for normal computing and about half that for gaming.

Is this a noisy Laptop? I am interested in this Laptop but not for gaming but for recording music so a noisy machine is not desirable.
Stevethesearcher 5 months ago
@Stevethesearcher For audio recording I would not recommend a high end gaming laptop because the cooling requirements will make it louder than you would want. Rather, select a laptop with an i5 processor and an integrated video card.
PowerNotebooks 5 months ago
@PowerNotebooks Thanks for your reply. I appreciate your response. Yes loudness is a big issue when recording especially if you have have a Mic set up in the same room as your Laptop. However brute power is also a consideration as most music applications now require considerable power. I need a firewire port as my audio interface is firewire and I need a hard drive that runs at 7200 RPM. Those specs are a must. Ideally four gigs of Ram or more. How does I5 compare to a 2.4 duo core circa 2008?

is there a gamin laptop out there thats not 1000 dollars?
mikey420100 6 months ago
@mikey420100 no
camar0rs 5 months ago
@mikey420100 Depends on how demanding the games you'd want to play on a laptop are. There are some budget gaming laptops (AKA laptops with some sort of dedicated graphics card) out there for under $1,000 -- but check the user reviews to see if other people are successfully playing games similar to your favorites on them. (I don't expect to play anything newer than DOSBox games (& watch YouTube, of course!) on the laptop I'm shopping for, so anything with reasonable specs will do for me.)

if i wanted to later upgrade the graphics card from a 560 to a 580m would i mail it to sager to have them upgrade the card?
ryminn 6 months ago
@ryminn Yes, Sager can upgrade your card to the nVIDIA GeForce GTX 580M 256bit w/2.0GB GDDR5 for you.
PowerNotebooks 6 months ago
I was amazed with the NP8150 being considerably easy to access the specs from the bottom with only a few plates removed! Pls tell me this is as easily accessable as the NP8150! It would be so awesome to upgrade a 17 inch laptop with ease! And my other question, will this laptop stay cool (quiet or low noise) when i play? If yes, then i salute Sager! Missing backlit is a small problem for me compared to upgrading.
Rockboy58 7 months ago
@Rockboy58 Simply put...yes and yes!
PowerNotebooks 7 months ago
@Rockboy58 I can barely hear my fan during gaming and temps are all perfectly within the safe ranges. Everyone should know that Sager showed a backlit keyboard prototype that they plan to introduce so it looks like everyone will be pleased soon enough.
voianhemsed 6 months ago
@voianhemsed Are you serious? A backlit keyboard in an easily upgradeable laptop for a gamer such as myself would be a dream machine! And by upgradeable i mean easy to access the specs like the CPU, GFX card, RAM, hard drives and all that good stuff. But my fear is that if i try to change the CPU or GFX card, what are the chances of the laptop to stop working? Even if the new gadget is compatible? And btw, do u know if Intel will make more i7's or similar GFX cards in the future?
Rockboy58 6 months ago
@Rockboy58 Changing the CPU and GPU is quite straightforward and low risk if you take your time, use an anti static wrist strap and electrically non conductive thermal paste. I have changed the GPU and CPU in previous models and they work fine. Intel will make more i7's and it is in constant motion. Ivybridge is the next iteration and it will just keep on improving. Nvidia and AMD will also continue to release new GPU's, the HD6990M and 580M has just been released for example.
voianhemsed 6 months ago
@voianhemsed I can understand the wrist band but what do i need the paste for?
Rockboy58 6 months ago
@Rockboy58 The thermal paste is used in between the surface of the CPU / GPU DIE and the heatsink to aid in heat dissipation by filling in the microscopic gaps.
voianhemsed 6 months ago
Is this laptops keyboard backlit? Because if not, i'm not interested in it. Apart from the specs.
Rockboy58 7 months ago
@Rockboy58 No, none of the Sager laptops have backlit keyboards. However if you look at our other videos, or visit PowerNotebooks/com, you will see that the ASUS G series and the MSI GT series laptops do have backlit keyboards.

PowerNotebooks 7 months ago
@NotATyto
PowerNotebooks 7 months ago
@PowerNotebooks hey im looking to buy this laptop off your website but if i dont select an OS.. how will i get the laptop to boot?
XLilShaneX 7 months ago
@XLilShaneX We don't force our Sager customers to buy a Windows 7 operating system because too many of them use Linux, or have their own license.
For those that do want Windows 7, we offer Premium, Professional and Ultimate as upgrade options. If you need Windows 7 just select the version you want, and you will get a clean install with no bloatware or scamware.
PowerNotebooks 7 months ago
@PowerNotebooks so since im buying the np8170 it will come with linux? and it that better for gaming that windows?
XLilShaneX 7 months ago
@XLilShaneX No, it does not come with Linux. It is up to the user to install Linux if that is what they want. Linux or Windows 7 is a personal choice, some people say Linux is better, others say Windows 7 is better.
PowerNotebooks 7 months ago
@PowerNotebooks oh i think i understand so if i dont select an os can i still use it like a normal computer or is that for people that have windows 7 discs and stuff already
XLilShaneX 7 months ago
@XLilShaneX If you don't have your own OS, you will need to select one of the Windows 7 choices or it will not work.

Low on budget, cant afford these needed upgrades now :D
reach2abhijeet 8 months ago
@reach2abhijeet
PowerNotebooks 8 months ago
@PowerNotebooks So, I can upgrade the 8170 which i buy with 460 to 485 later ? This has added more to my confusion on deciding between these two machines.
I am not a heavy gamer, do engage in a moderate gaming over weekends. But I don't want a machine that burns hot. I learn from you that G73 cools better but no upgrades...too bad.
Please help me decide between the two, I need to place it by this week.
reach2abhijeet 8 months ago
@reach2abhijeet
Call me at 1-877-711-1777 between 9:00 AM and 6:00 PM Pacific Time Monday through Friday to discuss the alternatives.

quick question, does the hdmi port allow you to plug in eg. your ps3 or xbox etc. and play on the laptop screen or does it only allow you to use it as an external output, ie. to send video/audio signal to a projector or monitor? thnx.

I'm thinking of buying this model, but with a 120gb SSD and a 500gb drive for other media and files. How do you think the performance of games and general programs would run off an SSD with this model?
nexusparanoia 9 months ago
@nexusparanoia
I would strongly recommend getting a Solid State Drive in your primary bay and keeping the 500GB 7,200 RPM as your secondary for storage. Then put your OS and all your applications and games on the SSD, and all your data on the 500GB 7,200 RPM.
PowerNotebooks 9 months ago
@PowerNotebooks Yup, that's exactly what I'll use the two drives for. One last question! Do you find a major difference between the GTX 470 and 485? I may compromise and get the AMD Radeon 6970M.
nexusparanoia 9 months ago
@nexusparanoia
PowerNotebooks 9 months ago
@nexusparanoia

@ItsKadBuddy Nope. It never got too hot at all.

PowerNotebooks 10 months ago
you said it "handles" those games? that means nothing; what was the actual average framerate for each game?
davdd1032 11 months ago
@davdd1032 Based on the tests we ran on some of the games, here are some examples of framrates on a stock 470M @ 1920x1080 with 4xAA
Final Fantasy XIV: 50-55 FPS
Dirt 2: 55-60 FPS
Crysis: 35-40 FPS
We will be testing more games, but likely with the new Nvidia GTX485M w/ 2GB GDDR5 and ATI Radeon HD 6970m w/ 2GB GDDR5

not sure if this is any cooler than G73SW.
if its significantly cooler under load (maybe 5 and up?), i'll take this over G73SW
jjolmyun 11 months ago
@jjolmyun
The ASUS G73SW-A1 will be cooler and quieter than the Sager NP8170. The ASUS G73SW-A1 also has a better warranty package, a backlit keyboard and comes standard with a Republic of Gamer's Mouse and Backpack.
PowerNotebooks 11 months ago
@PowerNotebooks I have not seen the Asus G73SW with a GTX 485M anywhere and if that is the case then no heat comparisons can be made with the Sager since the GTX 485M is in a completely different league being almost twice as fast than the 460M.

There are only a few that have shipped before the Sandy Bridge recall, and the Sager NP8170 won't start shipping again with the new, "fixed", chipset until mid-March. This is why you won't see any reviews of them yet.
