Awesome artwork you got there man! You're very talented. You should work as a costume designer for films! I would pay you for making me a Davy Jones costume like this! :))) Of course I would add some colors to the mask as you mentioned that was missing. But anyway big like! :) Keep up the good work.
Dude, you were MOST worried about the HAT? DAMN, you must have really good confidence in yourself. I mean, you were worried most about a hat, that you can buy, and alter, but you made a mask of Davy from scratch.. Dude, that is awesome, and I would LOVE to have that talent, or just the costume, (If you decide you want to do another) Haha,, Dude, you are talented. Love it..
to make the mask coloring better do a moderately thin coat of dark green and a hint of grey to the sides and a very light coat of both green and grey on the face that should work
you are a great artist my friend, i am not an artist but i can sense if you go the distance all the way to the irritating details you are in for another level of greatness and (don't think about the cost its keeping you behind) i enjoyed this Video allot. good luck
I think if you mix the yellow with grey and/or a peachy skin color, it would get the squid-like color better. i suggest experimenting with small ammounts, but i guess you know that. You're a genius! i'v been wanting to do some stuff and now I know how to do most of the stuff i want to do. One queston, How would you make a costume (of a headless person, such as the Headless Spectre from Scooby-Doo) and still be able to see, head inside the costume and everything?
This looks great considering the budget! I hear these things could get expensive. The only thing I wish you would have done would have been to add some shading to the mask itself. Just a little shadowing and colour would have jumped this up to a whole other level.
Question 1: Once you made your sculpture could you slice them in pieces and then latex the individual pieces? This is incase you wanted to form fit these pieces to the actors face using something like spirit gum and then color it in then or color them ahead of time using acrylic paints??
Question 2: once you make your sculpture, could you use the caster bandages to make your duplicate. Then paint your mask on the inside with latex or would that b a waste of time?
First, you do a great job man! I do sfx makeup for independent films. I have worked with latex and foam latex for awhile, but recently thought about trying it the way you do it. Simply because not enough room where I am at and I can't get too mess here. Not enough space. So for now this is the method I think would be great.
Wow. I've always wondered how other people made their Davy Jones costumes. I took a crack at it myself back in 2008. For the head I used a scuba mask as a base with an elastic nose strap and bedfoam tentacles attached with silicone caulking. My crab part methods are real similar to yours, right down to the oatmeal container :) If you ever want to try it, silicone caulking pushed through a cake decorating tip and punched with a wet pencil eraser are cool barnacles.
that is freakin' amazing! the only thing I could say would be painting it cos the yellow looks a bit goofy, but apart from that a bloody stellar job mate!
Wow, dude, you suck (dripping with sarcasm, of course!)
Holy shit! ::shakes head:: Freakin' amazing. Just...wow. (And I really, really wish I'd seen this a couple months ago, I'm making something similar, your video would have been insanely helpful. I'm sewing mine. Egads!)
how do u prevent the latex from sticking to itself, when pulling it off the sculpture? my first attempt got ripped to shreds, i didn't have enough layers. I am trying my 2nd attempt, it is still ripping, and when I was trying to pull it off it got stuck together and then ripping as i tried to unstick it....I'm really frustrated b/c im out of latex, and i don't want to have to try again....The 2nd attempt was 16 whole ounces, and it still doesnt work...any advice?
@Timmeken07 I ordered it off amazon, couldn't find any in stores. The latex came already in one mixture, no mixing of parts required. I don't quite remember the brand though, some sort of mask making specific latex though.
Thank you to answer my first question ;). My second question is which kind of clay or plasticine/modelling paste you worked with? Kind regards in advance (again) :)
did u use vaseline on the sculpt, b4 u brushed on the latex. How important is the vaseline, to the mask not ripping? also, how many layers of latex did u use?
Congrat´s Alex. I Believe that´s the most amazing Davy Jones Hand Made costume i ever seen, I´m from Brazil, i made one myself with cheap materials take a look in my videos.
man, your predator and davy jones costumes are incredible. You have great attention to detail, and you're a natural sculptor. You have to have some talent to sculpt the clay faces.
Hey, have you considered making a spider-man costume? i've seen some pretty good ones, and I bet you'd make a great one.
@Kachukeland Something like Spider-Man would require much smoother surface, probably through the use of casting and molding. All that for a full body would be pretty crazy. Just a mask maybe (and maybe a wetsuit for the body), but that would be a fun challenge.
@alexthemoviegeek don't forget, there needs to be a subtle muscle suit under the spider-man suit. only to enhance certain features, like the pecks, biceps, shoulders, maybe quadriceps.. yeah, i didn't really think about how much of a challenge that would be.
@Kachukeland I'd say if it was easy enough to sculpt the webbing on top somehow, starting with a base unitard or lycra suit would be great for Spider-man. I'd rather do a Venom anyway. Heh.
Next project won't be a costume, but it could turn out to be pretty cool. I also might do a Dark Knight batsuit.
@alexthemoviegeek ooooo, sounds cool! I've seen some pretty cool Halo suits made from cardboard and paper, believe it or not. Batman could work similarly.
@Kachukeland Yeah, I'd love to do pepakura. But it's too "mainstream" for me. I want to do things a little more uniquely. Or at least costumes that people don't make very often.
@TechBear1 And it's weird because it seems there are some translucency issues with him, like his skin looks like different colors under different light. To make the proper coloring would take paints and skills I really don't have. There's a guy on deviantART who did a great job on his.
@TechBear1 At the very least, I needed some blue. There's a lot of dark blue on his tentacles, but I didn't have the right colors, for cream makeup that I would have used.

@Comicwriter232 Rubbing some baby powder on the mask helps it not stick to itself. I suppose I should add that detail in an annotation.
