David's Japanese is impeccable but Ken's has a slight accent. Ken's fluency is amazing though and his understanding of Japanese culture is profound.
The problem with Ken is his attempt to put on a Japanese accent. It's obviously an English native pretending to not be an English native. It's hard to avoid dipthongs and English consonants when you know how to pronounce them =).
I applaud David Ury for his performance, everything from the Japanese to his personality virtually flawless.
'Ken Tanaka' is a pretty good actor. I've seen him on a kid's show as a cook or something.. I can't remember what the show is called but it was on the Family Channel. He didn't have an accent on the show..

Why is he misleading viewers into thinking he's Japanese? @KunoichiiTaicho same thing happens in some american sub-cultures eg. Black/African American sub-cultures mixed with any caucasian by a noticeable means.
its very similar...if they grow up towards black they are usually outcasted saying they are mixed and are not 'black enough'. same with white, they usually see them as non-white or rather 'mixed' and dont fully embrace them as a part of their sub-culture.
its a purist-xenophobic outlook thats normally unintentional, but influenced by family
@JamesMcCloud ahhh i see... it's unfortunate when ppl are judged like that. i'm also mixed [ half finnish half filipino ], and i feel like the " outcast " sometimes when i'm around either race because i'm not " pure " .. but i've never been harassed or bullied so i was just wondering about japan. thanks, you helped ~

It's really interesting that this seems really strange. I guess I'm a little jealous that Japanese came as a default for him whereas I study really hard to learn but may never speak it with the same proficiency. Really interesting indeed.
@arcthelove Yeah.. But, he can't speak English that well, and in most countries, now, know English in some form.. So, you actually got the better deal. English is supposed to be pretty hard, but I guess someone, like us, who are already programmed with it, wouldn't really know that. xD;

I'm half jap/white, and I had no problem until I was in the US.
In the US, I had many racially crude comments thrown to me, even from strangers! Now, that's what I call lot of racism. Japan is so much better compared to that!
i guess it depends on your perspective/experience.
i used to work for a multinational company and many of our employees would travel from north america to japan, i remember some of our Indian guys were not received well at all...I won't go into details on here, but i was shocked.
well, and don't get me wrong ken, you're very good, but i know you are BSing and it's just an act. japanese is not your first language. but the other guy i can't tell. I mean...his word choice in japanese was simple, but either he studied the shit out of japanese and did an amazing job with the accent or he was really raised over there.
japanese always expectspecial ability . esp mixed jpnse . for example once we meet mixed person between german american and japanese , even 10 years old kids say " you guys so lucky to speak trilingal !!! please study so hard and win a nobel prize !!! so some people mightsay this experience was racism. but possitive way.
It is common for Japanese people who _can_ speak english, to not want to speak it around fluent speakers, because they are embarassed about their accent. This even holds true to online chatting, they are often embarassed about thier imperfect grammar.
Whether or not the people involved are telling the truth, it isn't an uncommon scenario. Well...the part about being embarrased to speak anyway.
@Dzaal17 You are right. I have a friend who, while Japanese 100%, is always trying to practice his English in front of me. He gets annoyed when I try to practice my Japanese in front of him.
He's usually saying "Go to Japan with me, and THEN you can practice. Until then..." and then that's it, lol.
Neither of these men are native Japanese speakers. I did this same sort of thing as an exchange student to Japan when I was 18. But to do it at their ages, is embarrassing. Ken's real name is probably Scott Miller and the "guy with the bad English pronunciation" is NOT, I repeat NOT, a "native Japanese" FAIL
i think " i " with small " i " makes " vi " or " i " with the ten-ten- some thing like that. its better putting the " vi " instead of saying " deibido "
I realised after posting that there shouldn't be a small "i" in there. デービッドさん would be the correct way to write David in japanese.
And as far as the small and large versions of "i" goes the change that a small "i" makes is decided by the consonant before. ヴぃ and ビ are both the exact same thing. I've asked my japanese teacher about it and it's all just a matter of preference ^^
@Sunkan86 It depends on where his parents are from. You have Davids in different countries and the pronunciation there might be different. A french David would be ダヴィド. A French Thomas is トマ (and I know that cos I use it every bloody day!;°)
It makes me jealous sometimes. There's a lady who goes to my University who was born in Japan. She spends a lot of time around her Japanese friends and roommates.
I personally have never heard her speak Japanese, but I'm sure she can understand a great deal of it.
well, ken is 'supposed' to be a native speaker, but he doesn't really sound like it, so how am i to know if he's telling the truth about david just because of what he says?
....anyways, my point was just that his japanese sounds really nice :)
@TheSuicideCityMayor David was truly born and raised in Japan (Kamogawa in fact) and "Ken Tanaka" (David Ury)went to university in Tokyo, so he really does speak Japanese, and has worked in Japanese TV before speaking Japanese.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
You can speak English well ken. However, because you have such a monotone voice it is stressing to watch your video. In its entirety it is very entertaining and informative. You might wish to try to add a bit of fluidity to your speech so as to liven it up a bit. Overall, good job.
Obviously Ken "Tanaka" is just an act, but its fucking weird. He sounds like a retarded child. His Japanese is good, but its very clear that he is not a native speaker.
I dont know, something about all this just irks me. Why does Japan attract so many dipshits?
Well it seems that people that watch this enjoys it so I guess it's depressing that we watch this. Just wondering, why are you watching if you don't like him? Oh noes?! You probably like his videos too! How depressing u_u.
Because you like it ;o. Yes Frankgrimes17. Likes the Caucasian dude that can speak fluent Japanese =D. It's ok dawg. It's I understand that you don't like him but deep inside.. you love him.
Since most of you didnt know, "Ken Tanaka" is not his real name. His real name is DAVID URY, a not-so-famous comedian from California.
DAVID URY studied Japanese enough to speak ok. but even though he tries hard to hide his American accent, its obvious he was not raised in Japan. "Ken" doesnt exist. Youve been fooled.
it is kind of obvious it is just a joke, he is not trying to fool anyone. it is just all fun, not sure why people want to keep saying he is a fake. it takes the fun out of his character. should we call steven colbert a fake because he is just playing a character on tv? it is the same thing. just entertainment.
@DOTQWERTY218 it's clear that what he does is make a joke out of the how funny Engrish sounds to native English speakers and he exaggerates all of the completely foreign speech patterns and word choices.
But of course Japanese people who don't speak English well don't notice what he's doing at all, which is pretty funny.
@DOTQWERTY218 Yup, you're right. He's faking but who cares? It's in Japanese tradition to see the hidden beauty. We say "hide your beauty and it will shine". He's maybe faking but he's trying to show us something beautiful. So let's just enjoy the beauty. If anybody cares he's faking, just go somewhere else and see others' videos. But there's always some kind of faking. So why bother?
Dang it, I fell for it. First I believed him, then I saw some comments on here about this so I thought He was a fake too. Then I saw one of his videos and I'm like, no, he can't be fake. So I guess I HAVE been fooled.

One of my friend is half-blooded Jpnese. But he can speak either Japanese and English very fluently.
BobbyLovesChina 2 years ago
It is common for Japanese people who _can_ speak english, to not want to speak it around fluent speakers, because they are embarassed about their accent. This even holds true to online chatting, they are often embarassed about thier imperfect grammar.
Whether or not the people involved are telling the truth, it isn't an uncommon scenario. Well...the part about being embarrased to speak anyway.
Dzaal17 2 years ago 2

It would be so interesting to see David making video blogs. With his thoughts on Japan and being raised as a caucasian :)

i think " i " with small " i " makes " vi " or " i " with the ten-ten- some thing like that. its better putting the " vi " instead of saying " deibido "
Eric858 2 years ago
I realised after posting that there shouldn't be a small "i" in there. デービッドさん would be the correct way to write David in japanese.
And as far as the small and large versions of "i" goes the change that a small "i" makes is decided by the consonant before. ヴぃ and ビ are both the exact same thing. I've asked my japanese teacher about it and it's all just a matter of preference ^^
Sunkan86 2 years ago
thanks ^^
Eric858 2 years ago
@Sunkan86 It depends on where his parents are from. You have Davids in different countries and the pronunciation there might be different. A french David would be ダヴィド. A French Thomas is トマ (and I know that cos I use it every bloody day!;°)
tp230 1 year ago
@tp230 Of course the names would differ but I'm talking about the american David. Im aware of that just as much as you are ^^

It makes me jealous sometimes. There's a lady who goes to my University who was born in Japan. She spends a lot of time around her Japanese friends and roommates.
I personally have never heard her speak Japanese, but I'm sure she can understand a great deal of it.

well, ken is 'supposed' to be a native speaker, but he doesn't really sound like it, so how am i to know if he's telling the truth about david just because of what he says?
....anyways, my point was just that his japanese sounds really nice :)
...and i'm jealous :p

@TheSuicideCityMayor David was truly born and raised in Japan (Kamogawa in fact) and "Ken Tanaka" (David Ury)went to university in Tokyo, so he really does speak Japanese, and has worked in Japanese TV before speaking Japanese.

Why does Japan attract so many dipshits?

smith00htims 2 years ago
Since most of you didnt know, "Ken Tanaka" is not his real name. His real name is DAVID URY, a not-so-famous comedian from California.
DAVID URY studied Japanese enough to speak ok. but even though he tries hard to hide his American accent, its obvious he was not raised in Japan. "Ken" doesnt exist. Youve been fooled.
pixusbubblejet 2 years ago 15
it is kind of obvious it is just a joke, he is not trying to fool anyone. it is just all fun, not sure why people want to keep saying he is a fake. it takes the fun out of his character. should we call steven colbert a fake because he is just playing a character on tv? it is the same thing. just entertainment.
DOTQWERTY218 2 years ago 21
like borat, you mean.
flurkoneko 2 years ago 3
@DOTQWERTY218 it's clear that what he does is make a joke out of the how funny Engrish sounds to native English speakers and he exaggerates all of the completely foreign speech patterns and word choices.
But of course Japanese people who don't speak English well don't notice what he's doing at all, which is pretty funny.
CafeAlpha 1 year ago
@DOTQWERTY218 Yup, you're right. He's faking but who cares? It's in Japanese tradition to see the hidden beauty. We say "hide your beauty and it will shine". He's maybe faking but he's trying to show us something beautiful. So let's just enjoy the beauty. If anybody cares he's faking, just go somewhere else and see others' videos. But there's always some kind of faking. So why bother?
omatsu123 1 year ago 30
David's awesome!

What? He's a fake?
Dang it, I fell for it. First I believed him, then I saw some comments on here about this so I thought He was a fake too. Then I saw one of his videos and I'm like, no, he can't be fake. So I guess I HAVE been fooled.
