For future reference, attic fans (aka whole house fans) have a nice pulley wheel on them. If you're in a rural area, chicken houses have larger fans, with larger pulleys on them. Worst case scenario, could be a source for motor and a pulley, in one shot.
You did a great job for min money. You should have gone a size smaller on the motor pully and had anyone with a metal lathe machine it to fit. It's a dead simple 5 min job, and you would be able remove it and know it is running true.
Next one is a biggie. Unless you want to kiss the running linisher belt, loose the strings on the sweat shirt when your around any machinery.
good job on the belt grinder i was thinking about doing the same thing, till i thought about the saftey issues,so instead i found a 2x42 belt sander at sears.com for 140.00 dollars its great love it. you should check them out..
@scavenom2008 yeah I agree. seems unlikely that something on 110V can make 4 hp. Thats what it said on the compressor though. Probably over-rated if not total over-stated.
@strantor those ratings are based on a momentary stall the energy spikes to 4 hp for a tenth of a second so they rate it at that. the most you can get from 110volts is 1.5 hp from a farm duty motor and that's even pushing it!
@JaKeth3snake I have a motor from a dryer that I was going to use, but it has 8 wires coming out. I dont know what they're for so i gave up on that. actually i dont think it would have been powerful enough anyways. contact wheel: no i don't know, thats why i made mine.
Instead of Skate wheels you can use Idler pullies for Timing belts. I did a few Quick fixes for a friend And since most of them have A Convex or Concave surface they can fix the problem even under heavy side load.
Personally I think it will save you money and increase the quality of your work many times over to spend the $3,000 on a top of the line Square wheel, Bur King or Bader knife making grinder. That cheap plastic golg caddy wheel will fall apart one day and when it does it could cripple you or blind you. The medical bills will be way more than the cost of a real grinder. Even a home made grinder using a real contact wheel would be a huge step up in your safety.
You are Right only if Money doesn't matter. It could also be said that the Quality of Work is greatly increased For having A Cheap well made belt sander Vs Non at all & just sitn in the Shed Wishing you had the $ to buy A Great 1.
As for Safety If We always put safety first then We would never have Gone to the Moon Or Came to The Americas for that matter. Guys dont Over think Too much We Just Do it.
I hope this didn't come off as an Attack, Im just Backn up This Guy thats Doin his best.
brilliant machine i was in the abrasive belt buisness most of my life selling macines from dynafile up to machines of 100 hp and 3000mm wide your machine is fantastic great imagination, one suggestion for tracking belts is to use 1/4 inch wide masking tape on idler wheel wrap it around the wheel in the direction of rotation then the belt wont try to throw it off usually a couple of turns of tape is all you need to track your belt. abrasive belts can be run up to 35 meters per second
could you fit a flat platen in there, perhaps with a frame of some kind? i'm working on a grinder for knife making, not just sharpening, and am trying to create a set up like yours but with a wooden frame that will take 2 x 72 belts. i'll also be making a tool rest. i'm using jb weld becasue my welding skills are close to non existent....at any rate, nice vid.
cool. I'd like to hear how that turns out. FYI, I'm not convinced that JB Weld is a good idea. I have no formal training in welding. I bought a small 110V welder and just started using it. my welds aren't pretty, but I'd like to think they are stronger than JB Weld.
I'm not using the JB for the entire frame and so forth, just the platen and attachment. I would never try to build an entire grinder that was held together with JB only. I'm not that stupid : ). I am, however, creating parts (arm, frame body, etc) that will hopefully fit together like a lock/key so that I can avoid welding. The "No Weld" grinder is a similar design except most people use steels and metals whereas I'm using primarily wood. Plans are available online for about 25.00, I think.
Very nice job. You show alot of ingenuity. I really like your tension arm design. I agree with JT about the contact wheel. The plastic hub is iffy. Casting one yourself would be a great project. Otherwise get the Grizzly 10" for $65.00 .
The one thing i would say as a felow knife maker is you should really replace the plastic drive wheel. that is just so dangerous, i calculated your belt speed from guessing your pully and drive wheels size and i came up with between 3500-4500 SFPM if that is a 3600 RPM motor. and at thoes speeds if that wheel was to come apart it could kill you. one made from plywood would be safer. there is a companey that makes wheels that are cheep. if you want help finding one let me know.
One thing i must disagree with is your coment that it does what a two thousand doler grinder does. yes yours is good but once you one of the other grinders you will fall in love. I have just got done making another one and i must say, when you can, eather make one or buy one. i did a video of my grinder and i will post it as a video responce. good work.
Wow. Your being jerk to me and you don't even know me....Was that soooo hard to let me in on your riddle talk? jeesh! go and read back your little riddles..
i don't use the contact wheel so i'l be grinding from the other end where the small wheels are, and will make a platen even though i don't use a platen much . all good thanks for the idea
yup but im not good when it comes to making things without instructions.I can get all the stuff i need for it but ive never seen how it actualy works and how to make it safe
Well I think you should try and wing it anyway, you might suprise yourself. If you don't start out with any preconcieved notions about how it is supposed to look or operate, you can build it in any configuration you want and be perfectly happy with it as long as it does what it's supposed to. Once you start trying to use someone else's plans, you lock yourself into doing it a certain way and using certain pieces that may be expensive and it can become very aggravating.
Sorry man, no blue prints. Didn't bother to make any seeing as I just threw it together from junk. Just get some junk and make one for yourself, you don't need blueprints. All you need is a belt going a circle, everything else is up to you so you can make it however you want.
thank's, glad I could help! I am normally more informative and I make the video as i'm making the project, but this one was too time consuming for me to justify stopping and filming.
Good job Charlie,I just dig the roller skate wheels..keep up the excellent work and i believe you'll be an expert knifesmith before long..Bobby in Tennessee
1. try to find a wheel that isn't plastic because you can't glue rubber to it.
2. if using a 3400rpm motor, don't let your drive wheel be bigger than the motor shaft + 2 inches or it will spin too fast. (i had to use that huge pulley because i was using a 10" wheel as the drive wheel)
3. get a mig welder off craigslist if you don't already have one
4. use something more sturdy than a leaf spring for something thats going to have tension on it.
Very creative! I got lazy and just ordered one. Not that Im disappointed. The one I got is a Delta 1-42 inch with a disk attachment about 200$ + shipping, not a bad deal. I still kind of wished I had spent the time to make my own. I think if there is one thing us craftsmen all have in common it is the pride that comes with saying I made it myself. Awesome video!
I just got done looking at your delta on the net. it says the side table tilts to 45degrees. could you modify it to tilt further? I am working on an attachment for mine right now where i would stick the blade into a slot that angled at (adjustable) 10, 15, 20, 25, or 30degrees off from the belt so that I can just send the knife a few passes thru it in either direction to put an edge on it. if you could angle your table further, you could do the same thing. thanks for the kudos!
I have thought about it and I dont think I can modify the table itself; however there are all kinds of possibilities for using jigs. I dont think Ill bother though since the platen is set up vertically you can see what angle youre grinding at very well. As a result you can grind some pretty precise bevels with just a steady hand and a good eye.
Absolutely awesome. This is exactly what Im talking about when you improvise! There isnt a better example of being resourceful as a mid level knife maker. Keep it up!
Great job!!!!!
