He was from a middle class Worcester family and was one of the hippies that hung around Elm Park in the late sixties and seventees. The only reason that man became homeless is the result of a head injury he suffered when he slipped and fell off the Providence and Worcester Railroad bridge over the Miss Worcester Diner. He was always bright and well spoken, a great musician and a nice guy. It's nice to see that he was loved and cared for at the end of his life.
what a good dude... i used to see him every day on the street but never really knew his story until after he died. he seemed to really know what was important in life
I didn't know Mr. Butch, but from the videos it seems that he was a good natured guy that was a high step above some of the panhandlers one sees here and about. Some of them seem so entitled to YOUR money, and if you don't give it to them they can be pretty nasty. Those people ought to be swept off the street and the Mr. Butch type people ought to be protected.
I knew Mr. Butch when I was going to Art Institute of Boston back in the mid-90's. He hung out in front of planet records and store 24 in kenmore sq. and had a big trench coat that always had crazy stuff written on the back. one day on his back it said "vagina lappers." he never bugged anyone though, everyone loved him. very sad to hear that he is no longer with us.
Inmy days living in Allston Ma. I encountered Mr Butch I immeadiatley was taken with this homeless man he was kind often drunk but nevertheless a neighborhood favorite.I no longer live in Ma.but I recieved a call informing me of his death. We love you Mr. Butch!!
I used to work at the Rat in the mid 90's and every day we would give Butch a Black Label Draft when we opened. He spent hours at The Rat, and we let him stay as long as he wanted as long as he didn't ask the customers for money or weed. Mr Butch was his own man. He'll be missed.
@bartamy03 never thought of him as anyone but human and a perfect example of self surviving . He actually helped me once when some rednecks were harassing me ... He was full of love ,life and reality..
My times with Mr. Butch go way back - the early 80s - The Rat - the times we shared under the secret grate that lifted to lead to the T tunnels in Kenmore Sq.- damn. A lot of memories. Although I am clean an sober 18 years and living in California - I will raise my glass with the rest of you - in tribute to a man who lived his life the way he saw fit. May we all do the same...
The only bum I know who offered me money when he thought I might need it! The only bum I know who had his picture on the front page of the paper just for being a great guy!
I saw him on a Red Line subway car on time on roller blades playing his guitar with a battery powered guitar amp in his backpack!
LOL A STATUE?! THIS is the way I want to remember him! Who's the person who did the statues in Davis Sq in Somerville? That sculptor did a statue of the guy who sold flowersnear the Allston toll boths with the sign that said "I am NOT a Moonie!" the statue stands by the (T) entrance on Holland St in Somerville. There's your sculptor!
wow, i moved away from allston about 5 years ago. and i definitely never forgot mr. butch. me and my buddy used to go see him all the time. i lived right in union square allston and he would always play his flute on the corner or harvard ave and shit... he was the man. rip. wish i could make the memorial. and fuck yeah, i would throw money on a statue haha
Goodbye, old friend. Whether it's memories of you lounging on your throne on the corner of Glenvale & Parkvale, or announcing your Equal Opportunity Pussy philosophy outside Harvard Chinese, you will always be that piece of Allston that those of us who have left will remember.
RIP Mr. Butch. I wish I had appreciated him more when he was around. I would walk past him so many times and never appreciated his witty remarks and entertaining personality. He was truly an Allston institution and should certainly be memorialized in some fashion.
I've lived in Coolidge Corner for 3 years and never knew Mr. Butch. I wish I had, now that I've learned more about him. He has my respect simply because he was a good person. If the response is strong, I think a statue of him could indeed be erected in his honor, Miller High Life and all. So do message "gkulaga" and remember that any small amount of help does make a difference.

He actually came from a very wealthy family. His sister was interviewed on the news after his death. He always just did his own thing.

R.I.P. Mr Butch. I saw him sometimes but I never talked to him. A statue of him would be good.
