These traditions existed all over northern Eurasia, from northern Scandinavia to Siberia. My understanding is that in some cultures the reindeer ate the mushrooms, their livers broke down the toxins in the mushrooms, and then the shaman & others drank the pee of the reindeer. In other cultures the shaman ate the mushrooms & detoxified them, and others drank the shaman's pee. But that's risky for the shaman.
After the shamans took the mushroom, they would get the rest of the tribe high by urinating and having the tribe members drink the pee. That way many people would have trips by a few mushrooms. I read that in The Golden Guide of Hallucinogenic Plants.
The song is now available in a high quality version from my bandcamp site music.guyjames.com as a pay-what-you-like download. Why not buy it for a loved-one this Christmas, or play it at a Christmas party and watch a fundamentalist Christian try to sing along before realising the words are different and they have inadvertently eaten the red pill ;)
They are not native american traditions they are Siberian
