@GuIfstreamGV Hi, that Escort was last on the road, well, taxed until December 1993, it is down as having a 2000cc engine, so after you had it someone must have put a pinto in it, looks like it may have been scrapped or may be sitting somewhere waiting to be renovated!
@MagicAyrtonforever You know you need to get another one and terrorise the French countryside again!! Did you ever roll or fall off that 2cv chassis hot rod???
@mainman2999 Observant man!!! no I didn't quite manage to kill myself!.. rolled a fiat 128 in that field though!! but I was more worried about losing my precious fuel from the tank!
@Annihilator1111 thanks for the history lesson! any reason you mentioned all that lot? I know for a fact that mine was made in Essex, England, South ockendon/ aveley to be precise!, I actually spoke to the guy in 1983 who ordered it back in 1971, he went to the factory to see it being assembled, two years later when he was 54 years old he part-exchanged it for a "new" escort 1300E as he thought the RS1600 was too thirsty!
@tmcunlimited oh cheers bud, i keep promising to do a video of it having a bit of action and some full throttle stuff, i will soon, so watch this space!.
@tightfisted1 wow! you must of been about 6 years old then ! because ive had it since 1983 and you were born about 1977 and i could swear the bloke i bought it off was around 35yrs old ! Sounds similar, but i dont have the yales on the bootlid, back in the day people stuck the bloody things on everything, i hate them!
Gorgeous car, basically my perfect Escort. Just wondering, is the ornage pinstripe an RS1600 'thing' (like the mexico stripe?) or is that just a personal touch?
@Transcontinental95 Hi, Thanks, when I bought the car in 1983 it had red pinstripes painted on, i had the car repainted to tidy it up in 1985 and when it came out of the paint shop it looked a bit plain, so i put some red pinstripes on it in the same position that the old red painted stripes had been, I think all rs1600s came plain without stripes, so all the stripes you see on a bda will have been a personal choice I think!
i see that expressed are now producing roof skins that sort of completes the jigsaw puzzle of panels needed for new bodyshells ,i wonder how long the agony has to continue ,before these amazing cars ,get a new lease of life ,i for the life of me cant understand ,why no one has seen a gap in the market, the mk1/2 escorts ,there record speaks for it self ...any way how is that awesome car going :) cheeRS
@kevrs2 hi Kev, yes the car is going fine thanks, I really need to put an electric fuel pump on it though, its fine flat out in 1st and 2nd but gets fuel starvation towards the top of 3rd gear, noticeably worse if I have a fat passenger in it too! I neeed to do that before i get it on the rolling road! I have at least found the limit on the standard mechanical pump, but for normal driving and a bit of blasting, the std pump is fine, simple and reliable and keeps it original etc! CheeRS !!
@chymist66 true true, but you left out Honda CBX 6cylinders, Kawasaki KH500 and all the air cooled triples, Yamaha RD400, FS1e !!, Suzuki Gt750, the summer of 1976 was most definitely long and hot, oh and FIAT 131 2.0 Sport, 131 Abarth and Lancia Monte Carlo's while they were going!
@zike500 Hi Zike ! how are you? You would be more than welcome mate! im hoping my friend will come over this weekend to sit in it and do another video to put on here, a bit of full throttle action, I just hope the nokia picks up the sound ok !
@SteveCardiff Hi yes its Ermine, I had it painted at a FORD dealer in 1984 to freshen it up, its always been ermine from new. I will get a mate round when it stops raining soon to take another video of it, maybe a walk round and then some full throttle action! As soon as i do, I will let everyone here who has messaged me know. cheers.
@RSROBXR2 I will do my best mate! I take it out for a blatt once a week just to hear it myself! I will try and get a friend round to hold the camera while i open her up! watch this space!! if its not raining, I will try this weekend! Chow.
@maialeroza cool! yes it its for me too, I must get a friend to sit in it while i drive it and do another video so you can hear it at full throttle through the gears!
@deadrabbits19772 No, rabbits, I bought it back in 1983 when I was 19, they were pretty scarce even back then, after watching "100 greatest sporting moments" on the telly which showed a saloon car race at Crystal palace in about 1971 in whaich a Mk1 BDA took on and beat a5.7 litre Camaro and a 2.5 liter Viva GT amongst others, I decided I had to have one! its here on youtube if you want to watch a truly superb race, i think the title to search is "1971 Saloon Car Championship" part one and two.
Thanks a lot rasmando!, it sounds deeper in "the skin" the phone camera only seems to pick up the high frequencies and makes it sound even more tappetty than it is!, over the 28 years ive had it i have thought that i should sell it, but then i get into it and give it a blat up the road i always think "nah, i love the noise and throttle response" so keep it!, i may be buried in it! Cheers, mike
Hi, i was going to put it on the dyno after I built it, but it was going to be a lot of hassle and more expense and I didnt really like the idea of it going flat out after what would be very little running-in, so I thought i would probably get round to putting it on rollers instead, no, havnt done that either! my old engine with 10.5 to 1 cr and milder cams gave 172 bhp at 7000, this feels a lot stronger so would guess 185-195, ive been told with L1 exhaust cam 200bhp is the norm at 8000rpm
BDA's were not meant to sound like pussy's. They were designed to be picked up by the ears and kicked in the goolies and driven flat out and sideways.
Cheers, but Ive been driving it hard since 1983 on local roads, i dont think id want to really abuse her on a track day coming up to her 40th birthday, id want a 5 link in the back, a slipper, a 5 speed box, 180lb front springs etc etc, at the moment its on "bodyshell and windscreen pillar friendly "soft 130lb front springs and 260/60 bilsteins so a bit rolly polly compared to modern cars round a track! Oh, and its ALWAYS on cam round here!
ah yes okinawa bomba rars, they are 13 x 8 magnesium, with 235/45 ultra soft kumhos. trouble is, all grit sticks to them even when they are cold they feel like bubble gum and you hear little stones flying up the wheelarches all the time, not good for stone chips!
Thanks a lot kev rs2, i take it you are a droop snooter? Did you go up to the fast ford day at silverstone 2 wks ago? superb showing of everything Ford. ! Laters oh, keep it faRSter !!
oh, hope its going well! is it a 2 or 4 door? whats going in it, a x/flow or pinto? maybe a Honda s2000?? Are you on the mainland or on an island? If i had the bda out there in that heat i would make up an air box and ducting and put air conditioning on it to cool the inlet air!,the engine really loves a winters morning, its much crisper and seems to bark more than in the summer when things get hot and fluffy under the bonnet! Mike
It's a 2 door 1300GT. I may put a 2lt pinto in. I don't like other brand engine transplant (honda, opel etc). It is ok with the temperature, we don't have so much hot weather except some hot summer periods. I live mainland (Athens). I thought of buying the necessary parts for converting an X-flow to BDA but I don't know if it's an affordable job. Anyway, the first thing I want by now is really good body restoration (fortunately there aren't a lot of rusts).
i dont like anything but a Ford lump in a Ford either!, its ok for some people, and some people do a great job that looks really "factory", i would stick with a x/flow if i was you, a bit lighter ( 170-190lb front springs on a pinto to handle, whereas a x/flow is best on 130-145lbs!)and lower c of g , a nice 83.5mm bore on a1.6 to 1700cc, a 244 cam, big valve head twin 40s and a 4:1 diff should be enough fun! a standard well balanced bottom end is ok for 7500.Hey ho, im off up the pub! Laters!
very very nice car, im 17 and have missed the escort generation by quite a way, but my dad tells me how cheap they were, group 4 shell for 2-3 grand, he had 3 ov em, sadly let them go, how much id love to live in the 70s n 80s jus to own a rs1600 sport on twin 45s big valve head lovely car dude cant wait for more vids
cheers schuminator, i was 19 in 1983 when i bought it, it cost me about £1250 then,i spent 18 months looking at mexicos and RS1600s but even then they were quite old cars and most had been "got at" i wanted a genuine un-messed with example and eventually found this one! you must watch ( ithink its titled) " 1970 saloon car championship" on you tube, it was a race with escorts etc beating a 6 litre camaro and a 2.5 litre injected viva gt, watch part one and then part two SUPERB!
hi, yes , its "1971 saloon car championship part one" then "1971 saloon car championship PT2" ell worty a watch! its one of the reasons why i bought a big wing BDA ! oh, and if you can get up to Stanford Hall lutterworth leics next sunday june 21st its avo national day and you will see loads of mk1s and maybe mine if its not raining!!!
thanks minimagic1, not really a show car because they are afraid to use theirs much, i like to get mine out and shock a few modern cars with a quick blat up the road, its hard to believe its 38 years old. i had it painted at a ford dealers in 1984 and nothing since, so could do with a bit of tlc here and there. should have a better video on soon.
It's always a pleasure to see an escort in such condition. Even more with a 1600BDA engine... I have 2 white two doors escorts. One pinto engined from 74 (2000cc) and one crossflow 1300cc from august 1968.
wow, great posting!
I had an electric blue one PVX191K in '75, anyone seen it?

cool dreams !, maybe cut down on the cheese before bed?, when you have the head off a BDA i normally have nightmares !!

I think you right. I might stick with the Lotus Twincam then... although I did have a bad nightmare once...even without having cheese before bed!

It's always a pleasure to see an escort in such condition. Even more with a 1600BDA engine... I have 2 white two doors escorts. One pinto engined from 74 (2000cc) and one crossflow 1300cc from august 1968.
