I did a bit of hip hop with my buddy Kelly Toledano under the group Model Minority a ways back, but I always found having a group/band as being too stressful for me, so I ended up doing my own project. @lemun73 In 2007 I was still in school and May 20th was the last day of finals. Had a cigar and a beer, and ended up making the demo for this track in one lazy afternoon. I never bothered to rename the file from a date to an actual name, so the track is actually untitled and only carries the name of the date it was born.

@stegrex did you sample these horns? and what type of sampler do you use? also this has an awesome feel to it

@chbushong Yup, they're sampled. I used Reaper and I manually found the tempo and then sliced the sample into small parts. Then I put it back together by copying and pasting piece by piece. It's a bit more work than using an Akai MPC, but I was able to get more control and precision by manually editing using a software recorder. I'm a drummer, but I still find that my samples from a hardware sampler are too sloppy.

@SkullphuX Hahaha, thanks man. A couple of people have come up to me who wanted to rap on this one, and include it in my first album, but I realized it wasn't the usual hip hop beat, so I said no multiple times. I let the eloquence of the horns deliver the feelings I felt that day I made it.

the DEFINITION of trip-hop. this is what the father's of trip-hop had in mind when "inventing" the magical genre. trip-hop is such an amazing blend of minor/chromatic tones and dub-like melodies, all masked by echos and reverb. dude...... this is amazing. i havent found a good trip-hop song in a long while until now.

It sounds like a song that you would put at the end of a movie or in a finale. Like a farewell to something good... or a lament for something good that is gone now, and you can't help but remember your happy times with it.

Ha, that's pretty darned close. I made this on May 20, 2007. Didn't have a name for it. 5-20 made sense to me because it was just a track for me. But a year later I released it, so go figure.

No one had tried to understand where the track came from before. So I guess in your case, playing it on the last day of school carries that meaning for you, for what the last day of school represents. And that makes sense in my mind too.
