no moat instead just an empty pit o doom like a fall to the bedrock i did that and didnt live... you could have a stairwell and path at the bedrock layer out of it with a rail for easy acess lik a train station

I think you should build a cobblestone keep at the top of the mountain and build the wall so it comes up the mountain and protects the keep. Also if you do this idea you'll have all of that space at the bottom of the mountain to do what ever you want.

I've seen some comments of a piston draw bridge be careful it can be so buggy. My switches went retarded where I would have to cross the bridge flick the switch(the bridge stayed up thats the bug) then had to cross the bridge again flick the first switch and then flick the second switch to make the bridge go down

Dude you should use the mountain as your castle! Use the part jutting out as a balcony with a lot of different levels, and then use the rest of it as the actual castle. Turn it from dirt and stone into just stone, but keep the shape, and put a wall all the way around if you want for extra protection. Definitely put in a lava moat
