So this really was a septic tank? i never seen a round tank that small, looks like a 500 gallon tank.. I used to see tanks somewhat like that in yards to catch water from around the house and leech it back into the yard elsewhere from around the foundation, and you would have to clean it out every so often cant remember proper name for it, but it was not for septic that i recalled just for yards that didnt have good drainage,

if you are not hooked up to the city sewerage system to take you wastewater away (including toilet flushings and anything that goes down the drain in any of your sinks) a property usually has a septic tank which collects and breaks down the solids by a natural organic process and runs off the clear water via a mass of pipes around your property. occasionally, the reamining sludge (which sinks to the bottom) must be pumped out and discarded in a public treatment facility.
