  • Very cool vintage Enz!

  • totally nuts about 10 years ahead plus they needed better PR fo' sho'.

  • phil judd is so underappreciated - it's pathetic - amazing artist.

  • After a time in prison...(05/2010) only Wally man enough to be supportive...this song has a renewed potency for me ..lyrically !

PG get stuffed ...sad little troll...

  • @philjudd "No Bother To Me" always makes me think of your situation, too. You've got a lot more support than you think you have.

  • @philjudd -please hold on Phil-so many are pulling for you-I'm way over here in Louisiana praying for your strength-your words and music mean so much to many of us-we're with you!!

  • Mr Phudd looked creepy even then

  • Contrary to the description, this was originally broadcast in colour - Australia went to full colour in March 1975, a couple of months before "Mental Notes" was even recorded...

Would've looked great in colour, pity the VTR was only black-and-white capable...

  • This was actually filmed in New Zealand, not Australia. New Zealand had not yet gone colour.

  • New Zealand got colour TV on October 31, 1973 - 18 months before Australia.

  • I stand corrected then. I was told by two different people-one of whom was Tim Finn himself-that New Zealand didn't get colour until about a year AFTER this was filmed.

  • you are so fucking full of shit, Shirley. I bet if Phil knew you and Tim were buddies he wouldnt be happy..

  • Nathan, I probably shouldn't grace your stupid and vulgar statement, but THIS ONE I will reply:

first, the other person who told me that WASN'T Phil, but a fan, like myself. Second, I spoke to Tim YEARS BEFORE I ever met Phil, when I attended a Crowded House concert and Tim came out to where I was standing on the sidewalk talking to Nick Seymour.

And while I have your attention Nathan, let me deliver a message to you that PHIL HIMSELF asked me to personally deliver to you:GROW UP!!! >:(

  • i have a message to you, you fucking STALKING PSYCHOPATH, Mr Judd always refers to you and your buddy Jackie as "fucked up acid casualties straight outta to 60's"... so ill take "grow up" anyday over that. as for the tim bit, youve proven yourself to by a complete LIAR, telling people you were friends with SYD BARRETT just before he died... I myself have spoken to paul breen, syd's brother in law, and he said the only people he was in contact with was family only. GET A LIFE YOU LOSER!!!

  • I reckon this was recorded on one of those Sony or National 1/2'' reel-reel B&W videotape recorders which were popular in schools, colleges and businesses. Fantastic to know more early Countdown footage exists :)

  • What a Band they were. In their early days, more innovative than the Beatles, And i am a Beatles Fan.

Such Lasting Melodies and time signatures.

  • haven't seen or heard this since it was first aired on Countdown (it is the Countdown clip yeah?). It was so out of left field then but the words and melody stuck. Nothing that came after this by them really got me the same way.

    many thanks

  • When Phil Judd was younger he had the most BEAUTIFUL, expressive eyes!

  • Awesome NEW ZEALAND music...timeless...go the Kiwis.

  • It is great to see younger people getting into this - I still have the original 45 of Maybe. It was released on the Mushroom label and the flip side was a song called Titus. This stuff brings back really good memories.

  • who is that guy with the wird eyebrows an moustache

  • That is Wally Wilkinson. He was their excellent lead guitarist. Many fans feel that Wally was the BEST lead guitarist the band ever had.

  • I agree. That's why I find the mental notes versions of their songs much better than the second thoughts versions.

  • sweet song

  • this sounds like abbey road!

  • klassik enz long before i ever heard them.

  • Even though I'm a bigger fan of the New Wave/Neil Finn era, the old school stuff isn't so bad either.

  • i'm from germany, and i stumbled over split enz, for some reason, in the mid-80s.

their early recordings never die, this music still is so incredibly fresh, touching, funny and intelligent. some of the best pop thats been made, I think.

    BIG THANKS!

  • is this from countdown??

  • Oh yeah! Love anything Enz, even more with Judd still at the helm!

  • I seen them live at the Kerrisdale arena, Vancouver in 1982.I remember it well, definitely one of the best shows I have ever seen.

  • Phil Judd is beautiful!

  • Phil Judd was surely THE most gorgeous creature that New Zealand ever proudly produced! That face..that FACE..that GORGEOUS FACE!!!

  • Just a fresh-faced young man of 22 yr. here!

  • Whenever I watch Split Enz videos, I always get the feeling that to be a member of the band must have been the most amazing fun. :P

  • Yes for sure thanks so much YOUTUBE! I was like too young to see these but now to see them is just wonderful... I was and still am a big "Split Enz" fan but of course the later day version was all I knew before... poor me... :D

Great, amazing, theatrically, madly beautiful! :)

  • Wilkinson and Mike Chunn are hamming it up quite well. It is Chunn who amazes me here the most. He really looks the part(a bit of Shirley Strachan about him) and his presence is quite strong. It is a shame he left. Also I know he didn't play bass on Maybe but there must be some other reason he wasn't in the video as it is not like they are playing live...

  • Mike Chunn was indeed a talented and important member who's exit from the band had a noticable effect on their music.

  • Apparently Mike didn't actually play bass on the actual track, their producer for 'Mental Notes' (David Russell) did. Mike thought it was too hard.

  • I just got Mike's second bio ("Seven Voices") and read it and I didn't read that in the second book nor the better known first one("Stranger Than Fiction")either-that I recall. Where did you hear this? I do know that at that time, Russell was arguably a more accomplished guitarist than Mike was overall.

  • Well, I just asked an ex band member this question and he assures me that Mike Chunn did indeed play bass on that track and ALL the other songs on "Mental Notes".

  • ask chunn...

  • I asked Phil and he confirmed that Mike DID play bass.

  • who is mike?

  • Mike Chunn is the bassist who during one part of performing "No Bother To Me" ducks back andf forth behind Tim at

3:39-3:54. He is the shortest band member.

  • Its a shame they dropped Wally Wilkinson (the bloke with the moustache and glasses) after 1975; he was one experimental guitarist!!!

  • That Wild Beautifull Falsetto of the "Mad" Phil Judd. Golden stuff. Youtube is wonderfull

  • dont fucking call my phather "mad"

  • I do apologize, i am a great long time fan of your father. It was written as a term of endearment i assure you. Your father had his own style on stage back then. There is nothing Like the early Split Enz Material anywhere. Be very Proud of him..

  • Phil did (and STILL does) have a gorgeous, unique falsetto!!! :D

  • This is quite old, huh? Video trouble/deterioration and all... but great find!!!

  • Yep i assume this is from 1975 because thats when the Enz's first album: "Mental Notes" came out that year. Very much ahead of their time despite the dodgy black & white footage!

  • Oh wow! This is soo great!

Thanks soo much for puttin this up!!

  • Split Enz don't look too good in black and white

  • Tim was a trip to look at back then. Noel & Eddie look great. Tim's voice was always much better than Chunn.

  • I think you mean Judd. Chunn didn't sing...

  • Tim was arguably a better singer than Chunn (who has never claimed to be a good singer)but Chunn was a better guitarist than Tim was at that time.

  • Soooooooo ahead of its time despite it being in black & white!!

  • this song still sounds brilliant...could have even been of RAM

  • If you're wondering where bassist Mike Chunn is on "Maybe," he's nowhere to be seen. That's because "Mental Notes" producer Dave Russell played it on the recording; Chunn found the bass line too difficult to tackle.

  • This is NOT true. I checked with one of the band members and he confirmed that Chunn did indeed play this and NOT Russell.

  • where on earth did you get this film?

  • "Maybe" is live vocals to the album backing track, "No Bother" pretty much is too, but there's some extra guitar in there.

    Absolutely priceless!!

  • This is brilliant! I've never seen footage of these costumes before. You are a legend.

...good Lord, *what* people would've thought upon seeing the Enz for the first time...lol...

  • Staggering...I am amazed...these guys were totally original...genius at work. Thanks so much for posting this.

  • Holy smoke! This made my month! Classic treasure footage!

  • Fan-flapping-tastic.

  • what can i add? this clip makes Youtube soooo essetial,AMAZING,thankz.

  • What wonderful memories - thanks so much for this!

  • Thank you!

  • Greatest thing ever. Thank you for posting.
