she is very very very good....however, the only thing that bugs me about her performance is the "uh" Zero-uh, Rose-uh, June-uh! I am surprised that the directors did not catch this, however, it could be that she was just caught up in the moment and that happened.
Never has a high schooler on youtube given me goosebumps. There's a reason you're in the same side bar as Patti, Bernadette, Tyne, Liza, and Angela...you belong there
@janjalick Agreed! I hate how some people stereotype high school performances and shows as very low quality, but there are some great theatre departments at some high schools that put on fantastic productions with spectacular actors.
@silenthillmaster755 I believe I read that this video was taken during rehearsals, so maybe there wasn't that big of an audience? at the end you can see a girl off stage left clapping, if this was in front of an actual audience, i dont think that girl would be there.
@bnorem09 but thats the last song and at the end of that song that girl comes on stage to talk to her but i dont know if she claps so i really dont know...
@silenthillmaster755@bnorem09 usually when highschools record their shows, the sound that is filmed is connected through the speakers, thus not hearing much of an audience.
also, this seems to be during a show. the girl clapping on the side is Louise (Gypsy Rose Lee)..it's written in the scene.
now...the ONLY criticism i really think is warranted here is she tends to add a lot of "-uh!'s or ah'!s to the end of her words when she screams. like "HERE'S ROSE-AH!" its not that bad, as its higschool and apparenty she went on to be in Legally Blond or something, so she's really good, but still, as a singer i always found that kindof annoying
why is this song always sung like they're...yelling the song? yelling isnt singing. this is why i like the glee version a bit better. he's actually singing it.
@silenthillmaster755 yes, it is great. but the emotion can still be portrayed through anger in your vocal voice. not yelled...that's the only difference. i think it should be sung loudly with anger.not yelled to get across the message that she's angry. at least, since every version they all yell so i assume the emotion is angry or something.
@lovedarlingjulie2435 her performance was outstanding theres nothing to critisize. the character is pissed off and shes going crazy. yelling and singing loudly are basically the same thing.
@lovedarlingjulie2435 Lol, Colfer hardly sang it well, and didn't understand the song or the material. This girl's performance is better--by leaps and bounds.
what the hell is wrong with you? Yeah the performance is flawed in ways but shes obviously talented. AND SHES IN HIGH SCHOOL. To say that about a high school performer whos finding her away through the acting community all i can say is youre a real asshole...
Maybe, but at the same time, this character is so neurotic and self-absorbed, a more babyish version of Rose, especially when she seems on the verge of a breakdown where everyone seemingly has left her, may be appropriate.
I do agree with you though. Her voice is brilliant.
@theemaestro576 to bad your stupid and you obiously dont know what auto tuning is, dumbshit. i never said she couldnt sing this song well cause i think it sounds amazing. i just love glee and chris colfer.
Truly fierce. I saw her as Vivienne in Greensboro, and you better believe she rocked Legally Blonde Remix. The touring company was smart to snatch her up right out of high school... this girl's future on Broadway is guaranteed. Such a natural talent, I just hope she gets the opportunity to continue to hone her craft. There'll be no stopping her then.
Landing a national tour right out of high school? I can see you as the youngest to play Elphaba. Go audition, girl. I'm from Bethel, real close to Newtown. You are amazing.
I rarely get the chills when I listen to music, but I definitely did listening to and watching this performance. I'll be damned if everyone in the audience didn't feel the same way. Congratulations on the role of Viviene, and I definitely hope to see more from Miss Hannah Rose DeFlumieri!
she modeled too much like Patti LuPone when she did Mamma Rose. I found it overly dramatic and put too much emotion to the point that it feels unrealistic.
The singing, on the other hand, is great.
But like I said, too much emotion to make it seem realistic.
@chattymagpie1210 The real Rose was an over emotional lunatic. So I think it's apt. Besides the Patti Lupone model won her a tony and it looks like it got this girl on a broadway tour.
@ndrwmls10 your point? So did Ethel Merman, Angela Lansbury, Tyne Daly and Bernadette Peters. Ethel Merman was good in her day but by today's standard, she needed more acting and emotions. Angela Lansbury is a great, versatile actor in general. Tyne Daly did an interesting performance when she did Rose. Bernadette Peters had a good balance of vocals and acting.
My best example of the best and emotions for Rose would have to go to Rosalind Russell. The acting was realisitic.
@ndrwmls10 Bernadette Peters interpretation was said to be the most realistic and truthful to how Rose really was. Peters was the only actress that June Havoc ever spoke to because Havoc felt Peters truly embodied the persona of her mother.
im 14 and im so inspired by you and every performance that you give. you are really amazing and when you get on broadway, i'll be one of the first on line for tickets. I hope that when im older i can give at least half of the performance that you give every song. bravo and see you on broadwya :)

A group of us stumbled upon this last night looking for something else, and we were completely blown away by the level of vocal and performing expertise you already possess as a high schooler! Keep at it, I see big things in your future.
This is talent. Let us not put past the fact that there is such a thing as an actor's interpretation to a role, and that NO role is set in stone. I think what this girl brings to the performance is completely valid and completely compelling. Brava.
Powerhouse vocals but tone down the overacting a bit. It is a mental breakdown for Rose but not a psychotic episode. Why-uh. That extra syllable needs to go. It's a contained mental breakdown and she showing the world that she has the sexy moves that her daughter has. Strong, strong vocals. Just throw some sex into it. It's such a strong song and you are just physically worn out by the time you get to this song. Nice job.
Okay, let's lighten up on the over-extended vowel comments. I agree, but that has nothing to do with the girl's innate talent. Blame the director or vocal director, not the actor. The raw talent is amazing. Would have given anything to be able to direct her.
@donttellmex17 No way! That tour is coming to my city in the summer. I'd see it, but I saw the tour back in June and can't splurge to see it again quite yet. I'd rather see something I haven't yet ;)
Holy shit girl you have got a set of pipes on you! and you'e acting! Wow!! You're school does some weird musicals for high school kids haha but no wonder, if they have talent like you who can actually perform it believably then why not! Keep it up! :)

that was brilliant...just so you know, I found this when someone posted it on Danny Gurwin's facebook wall with a quote saying, "don't you wish everyone came into term 1 with this kind of talent...." If you don't know who he is, look him up, because he see's an amazingly talented person.
I think it's hilarious that some people are trying to give nit-picky little criticisms of the performance. She is in HIGH SCHOOL and fabulous and anyone that decides to give "constructive" criticism is just kidding themselves. The fact that this is a high school production just speaks to what her talent will be five years from now.
WOW, great performance; I can't believe this is a high school production. I agree with the guy below, though, don't open your e-vowels. ;) But really, so impressive! Great voice and a fierce performance.
damn. I'm in the biz and girl u BLEW ME AWAY. 2:09-2:25 is the perfect example of technique, craft and power.Nice little riff in "around" not overdone, but a really nice touch!!! Beautifully done for a teenager, u for sure have career in acting/singing!!!
Very impressive for high school. Mama Rose is no walk in the park to play and I think you did a REALLY great job! Just in the future, try to be more than just angry and yelling. There is anger, but there's so much more as well. Don't let anybody tell you that this isn't fucking impressive as hell though. You're in high school tackling one of the greatest musical roles ever written. You have some SERIOUS talent.
i dont want to repeat the praise youve already recieved, but something i HAVE to say is that you absolutely own every nuance of your performance. i dont sense any doubt in what youre doing. also, from a costume perspective, i love that jacket. I dont know how else to say it, but if it was just a dress and not with the jacket... it wouldnt work. You would have looked too much like patti lupone... and youre not. youre you, and youre awesome
i get the LuPone references. I saw her 3 times, and have the bootleg. But HEY, you're in high school! I'm sure your director even told you to! No worries!
Now, your voice is incredible on this material. I can't say a bad thing about it. Brilliance. One thing I would watch out for, however, and this is purely technical, is adding sounds to the ends of words. For example, "RoseUH", "JuneUH", "ZeroUH" etc etc. It just gets very distracting. But brilliant job, girl. So fierce!
@MissBroadwayDork Perhaps they were. Either way, I found them ineffective and rather distracting. But that's just me. Either way, brilliant performance overall!
@bwayactor525 I directed this show and you are way off. Watch Patti, watch Hannah, totally different. Do your homework before posting ignorant comments. Jealousy makes people do the strangest things...
@bwayactor525 Lets calm down shall we. She's in high school. I'm not expecting a high school director to come up with a new version of gypsy. She made it her own while being heavily influenced by the Lupone revival. And let us remember: Amateurs borrow; Professionals steal. This girl didn't borrow it. She stole it. Kudos girl.
That's a helluva lot of talent, Missy. Keep it up, keep it grounded and keep beltin your face off. Don't be surprised if people don't know what to do with you for a while. I hope you're planning to go to college and not skip it to get right to NYC. Congrats. :) And I don't think you copied Patti. I saw Patti. I was more interested in you.
Ok. Honestly, I understand that it fell a *little* flat due to her almost copying Patti Lupone's performance. Really really really really I do. But you have got to give the girl credit. At most she has to be 18. At most, as this is a high school production. But aren't all the greatest actor's just imitators of life. I feel this girl has a big future ahead of her and she has some absolutely wicked vocals. Her performance I feel really stands on its own, and should be commended, not condemned.
I enjoyed it. But to me this song is about internal suffering not external voice. Great voice, not the song for you.

You would have looked too much like patti lupone... and youre not. youre you, and youre awesome
omnigeek13 1 year ago
i get the LuPone references.
So fierce!

@Jman383 I thought the Uh's where a character choice. I liked it.
MissBroadwayDork 1 year ago
@MissBroadwayDork Perhaps they were. Either way, I found them ineffective and rather distracting. But that's just me. Either way, brilliant performance overall!

@bwayactor525 I directed this show and you are way off. Watch Patti, watch Hannah, totally different. Do your homework before posting ignorant comments. Jealousy makes people do the strangest things...

I also appreciate the homage to the Bernadette dress. I don't know if it was intentional but if it was that director had a sense of humor.

Chin up, girlie. If I were in high school, I'd be completely flattered if I were being compared in any way to Patti PuPone. Nice job.
grindhousegirlie 1 year ago
