That was great I saw Paul Anderson do 250 for 10 reps when i was in basic training at Ft Bragg NC 1967 I tried and did 175 lbs for one rep at 160 body weight. Old school days
Not quite. He did what old time lifters called a side press, which is a press with unlimited body sway without being a bent press (which takes the torso to a horizontal position)
all u critics don't know shit. it's called a push press, and was once part of the powerlifting competition. u try moving that, even if u put your whole body into it. next u will say that olympic lifters are "cheating".
man, i remember when i first tried doing these, not only were my shoulders sore afterward, but muscles in my torso i didn't know i had. and i had been lifting for a long time! everyone should do these!
@DickKnowsBest Oh ok I see what you're saying now. Yeah don't worry about it man. Strongmen and powerlifters are probably more prone to push press and bodybuilders are more prone to strict pressing movements. So yeah, you're right.
For best test of vertical press power, sit on floor with both feet out in front. Have dumb bells handed to you by spotters. Start at bottom position and press. Only this method guarantees no muscles other than deltoids and triceps involved. That 170 x 3 poundage will take a serious tumble as no transfer of leg drive is possible. Before howling me down, compare with method in video. Still rings handstand pressups with weight belts are super, and circulation or "pump" is boosted by position.
Just drop the weight down until you don`t dip to press the weight then build from there, the more you can press with locked knee`s the more you will push press. Fact of life. Also don`t avoid picking the weight off the floor it`s part of the exercise. Makes it more credible from the floor.( Not half a lift)
It`s a one arm dumbell push press actually, and in my lifting days i never did the dumbell push press only the strict competition one hand press, that is no dipping or leaning 121 lbs @ 13 st Bodyweight , pity i don`t have any film from back then but there you go shit happens.
Anyway i did`nt say i don`t like the guys lifting just tidy it up AND pick it off the floor.
@oddlift i think you mean wheres my 170 pound push press, i cant even get close
however
im not the one critiquing other peoples efforts, fuck u really dont get that other people dont care about u boasting about ur achievements (pity i don`t have any film LOL!!!!!!)
and ppl dont appreciate fucking experts on everything saying wanker things like
"lift it off the ground" yeah thanks a lot, who wants to read something like that, nowone thats who
damn right,....forget those morons that say you have to stand on a ball to work your core or that bodyweight is functional..nothing is more functional than a heavy barbell military press
You don't have to, but if you do it will probably boost up your lifts. For me, doing only the basic lifts and not any ab work is like banging my head to the wall.
true, but you could say that for a variety of different exerices. Not stupid at all if you leave your ego at the door and don't try to lift weights far too heavy.
nice push press

Looking at your strength, I think you won't have any trouble lifting that from the ground
first. Keep up the great work!
Paul27chocolate 1 year ago
that's some crazy strength. i would've called it a one arm dumbbell jerk though. a press doesn't use jumping power. still damn impressive.

@DickKnowsBest Actually you are quite wrong. In powerlifting and olympic weightlifting, form is extremely important.

A decent lift - a valid push press with tremendous strength.

You dont even need to do ab training if you're doing Deadlifts,Squats and overhead presses regularly in your training.

You don't keep strict form with something like this. It's an explosive lift, incorporating all of your body that you can get into it.
SnipaWolfe 2 years ago
This is how the strongmen do the one arm DB press. Its not about having strict form. Its about using your body's power to lift the heaviest weights.
Met666 2 years ago
@Met666
Exactly, it's just another way of doing a great exercise! How could he lift 170lb
if he isn't strong anyway?
