  • nothing is hallmark, every little millimeter have a purpose...

just need to put all the study you can...

I don't know why there are so much disclaimers...really need to train with him...not on a seminar

  • This guy's technique is lame. No wonder DNBK wanted nothing to do with his group. He had to start his own. His father must be rolling over in his grave.

  • I attended a seminar with this guy a few years ago - bloody awful it was. I think this Kata is something his Dad made up isn't it.

  • Indeed, he is slow like a turtle ;-)

  • Thank you for this video.

  • Meibuken - the house of the warrior who thinks brightly. This is the literal meaning. I see it for this video for the first time and I'm impressed. At least now I know how Meitasu Yagi looked like back then. Good show of the great Hanshi.

  • Is their more than one translation of that? Because I always got "House of beauty" when it was translated to me

  • I don't know about more than one translation, but the one I wrote there is the literal. I had to learn it in the "Young Teacher's assistant" course I took a few months ago. Now I have to get ready because in January I shoud have a test for a black belt and I have a belt and a silver medal from the open contest in Italy went on between 5th to 8th of November.

  • @drkahara Meibukan translates to "House of the pure-minded warrior."

  • I know that, thesilentgate. We just wrote the same meaning in different words' taht's all.

  • Meibukan seems to be rather popular in America ?

    Hmm

  • Is it customary in this style to NOT point the toe at the end of the kick?

  • Yes. Meibuken Kata and even the Kaishu kata are done "Heel to forhead" in this style.

  • Posting archives like this is the best service that martial artists can do to improve our craft.

We can see that even in one generation of kaiha kata there are differences between the way it was done today and the way it was done just a few decades ago. Was the music part of the show or dubbed in? What year was this filmed?

    Great Video!

  • Yagi Sensei really placed a lot of ko uke into his kai-ha kata.

  • Strange that on Lenzi's tapes of Toguchi, a translator quotes Toguchi as saying "Ko-Uke should not be relied upon" but that is one of the trademarks of his additional kata as well. You also see Toguchi using Ko-Uke a lot in pictures and in Kihon. I love using this type of "receiving" and I believe it is hallmark Goju-Ryu.

    Let's talk soon, JP.

  • This and other nuances come partly from travels / research--Baqua and Hsing-I (sp); Dai Sensei and an Uchi Deshi (my teacher, Ikemiyagi Sensei) studied in Taiwan with the masters there, most notably, Master Hung--my teacher spent the better part of three years time there studying with Master Hung in Baqua and Hsing-I. Our 4 "training kata," the Tai-Chi series, were influenced by what was learned and brought back via my teacher. Later kata (above) were developed in part from these studies also.
