This was messed up and a terrible story. The only thing notable in this movie is when the character based off of Dr. Frankenstein first wore the long white haired wig and makeup. Why is this notable? Because he kind of looked and acted like Jiraiya.

Also Japan's media is different considering it's major writers, storytellers, artists, are all found working on manga and anime instead of simple television. This is the area where nationalistic pride as well as more beneficial economy is shown the most.

Innovations usually come in anime/manga anyways such as Death Note, Monster, any Hiyao Miyazaki films, etc. I only see ultra-violence and lewd promiscuity as an identity associated with it's media which is why it's always been so over exaggerated.
