I agree. It's something with the way she tells what she's thinking, all her negative thoughts, before she explains them. "These excuses how they served me so well" and "all these tapes in my head spin around keeping my vibe down". It's branches of the same tree, I feel.

I have to disagree. In Excuses, she seems to be accepting her own negative picture of herself, and trying to fare with it as well as she can, almost triumphantly. In Tapes, there is an air of resignation; it a painful, bitter resignation to some battle. I think Tapes is either about a relationship thats ended, or else it is her perception of what someone else feels in some situation... Whereas Excuses is more about self loathing, completely unrelated to any relationship aside from with herself.

I totally agree with you, but what I meant that the style is very muvh the same. She expresses her inner, darkest feelings and then she explains them sort of. You know? The songs deal with totally different subjects, but the approach is the same.
