I have been experimenting with all kinds of food safe plastics water and pop bottle caps work great I wash them take the plastic seal out then drill a 3/8 hole in the top.
While watching TV I use my dremel and scuff them up for more surface area and little places for the bacteria to cling to.
Next time I’m going to scuff them by putting them in a cement mixer with some small scrap metal pieces.
I like the Idea of using potential litter to clean water.
The Anox Kaldes biomedia is possibly the most efficient media available for biological treatment of water. It is use in commercial applications and used by Hozelock Ltd UK in their off-the-shelf Bioforce units
The process is actually used by Evolution Aqua and Hoselock buy from them! Evolution Aqua have and still use the media and the moving bed process in the nexus filter range!

In the UK you go to a garden centre or order it from a koi dealer.

It could be used in ponds of aquariums. You'll find Kaldnes moving bed in Hozelock Cyprio Trinamic filters.
